Ubuntu :: Clonezilla Fails After Bios Upgrade?

Jul 19, 2011

I recently set up a Clonezilla server as I have 200+ computers to reimage. Everything was setup and working fine, until I ran into a computer that has a newer BIOS. Grub loads and works fine, but the kernel hangs.

Specs:

Server: Dell OptiPlex 740
Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop x32, kernel 2.6.35-30 generic
Clonezilla version: 2.3.8-32

[code]...

So as mentioned above when I boot the client from PXE to image it, Grub loads, and as it tries to boot, the following lines appear:

Loading vmlinuz-pxe....
Loading initrd-pxe.img.....ready.
Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)....ok
[screen flickers then returns to the above text. Freezes.]

I updated the bios on a machine that previously worked to confirm/replicate the problem. How do I fix this?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 9.04 To 10.04 Using A Clonezilla Hard Drive Partition?

Apr 1, 2011

I'm trying to "upgrade" from ubuntu 9.04 to ubuntu 10.04.2 via a clonezilla (using a maverick usb clonezilla software with it's vmlinuz and initrd.img). but this clonezilla is not from a bootable usb flash drive, usb drive or CD, it's from the hard drive.

Here's what I have:

1) one 500gig drive with a primary partition under LVM. this partition has a 490gig root partition (ubuntu-root) and a 10 gig swap partition (ubuntu-swap_1). It has an extended partition (/dev/sda2) that's not under LVM consisting of one logical drive (/dev/sda5) that is the /boot partition.

2) I've upgraded the grub to grub2 (version 1.96) which has better features.

3) I've deleted the swap and reconfigured this partition with a name of (livehd) and it has an ext3 filesystem. I've copied the clonezilla software to this partition which also has the ubuntu 10.04.2 image that I want to restore to the root partition.

4) I've modified the existing grub2 using the 40-custom file so that the grub menu has the "Clonezilla Ubuntu 10.04.2 upgrade" entry in it.

5) the initrd.img from clonezilla has LVM support since I opened up the image to a directory using "gzip -d -c /boot/initrd.img|cpio -i" to check it.

6) grub2 sees the (ubuntu-root), (ubuntu-livehd), (hd0,1), (hd0), and (hd0,5) devices and can list (ls) their directories

OpenSUSE Install :: BIOS Message - Fails To Launch From CD

May 16, 2011

Recently, for whatever reason (I am led to suspect a bad hard drive), Windows 7 failed to boot even in safe mode so I decided to just use a clear hard drive and install a far less troublesome OS, so I decided to try to use openSUSE. I used a backup laptop to download and burn the 4.7 GB release. Problem is, I haven't a clue how to get it to work. I thought just placing the burned DVD in when booting would be enough, but the BIOS keeps telling me it fails to launch from CD. Luckily, I had enough foresight to download a live CD just in case. I was able to install from the live CD, and when I checked the DVD, I was able to access all the content.

But I haven't a clue how to use it to upgrade/install all the extra software. Also, I should add I am completely new to this whole thing. While I have used Linux before, for the most part others dealt with all the administrative aspects of ensuring the system actually ran/had the needed software on it. Finally, I have one major restriction placed on this whole issue. I live out in the middle of no-where and the only internet I can get is limited to 200MB a day (I downloaded the CD/DVD elsewhere, but normally don't have a chance to do that). As such, being able to install from the DVD and not needing to download much software would be nice.

CentOS 5 :: Edit Bios - Compaq Evo 5.4 Web Server Fails To Restart From A Power Outage

Jun 7, 2011

I have a small problem on my Compaq Evo Centos 5.4 web server. The web server runs just fine, the problem is it fails to restart from a power outage. Simple edit the BIOS. No! For a reason I can't think of the keyboard stops working after a few key strokes following the F10 to enter BIOS setup. Then its a power cycle. If left to BOOT the PC and keyboard are fine. After hearing about viruses which get to the BIOS I will ask can NIX get that far so I can adjust the Power ON?

Ubuntu Security :: How To Upgrade BIOS In 10.10

May 22, 2011

I have established that there is a BIOS virus in this machine (I have basically done every test that can be done) And I found the flashing utility for upgading and everything, now the only problem left is installing it Whenever I try this happens.....

Code:

./BIOSUpdate/FTS_FlashBIOSUpdateLinuxBootDisk_500110_1005782.SH
Flash FirstBIOS Update Diskette
V5.00 R1.10.2164.A1

[code]....

Now I did that while logged in as root....

sudo ./BIOSUpdate/FTS_FlashBIOSUpdateLinuxBootDisk_500110_1005782.SH

I also tried above command logged in as root and the 'normal' admin account. the usage instructions that I obtained from the manufacturer are: The BIOS Update File is a .sh file (Shell Script), which enables you to create a bootable disk to update the BIOS.The script only works if there is a C-Compiler installed at usr/bin/cc and the user has write access on dev/fd0 (e.g. if not filed as Root).

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting Fresh 10.04 Lucid Install Not Upgrade And Not Via Bios?

Mar 22, 2011

Still in 8.04 hardy heron, ordinary upgrade via automatic upgrade does not work, some essential pieces missing, but also my bios does not support usb cd and my "original" cd drive is broken. So........ I have burnt a cd Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx desktop version
32 bit (intel).

1) I have broken cd drive and old bios, i have usb cd drive instead which is not supported by bios when boot from cd.

2) I have still Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron but if i upgrade to 10.04 from there via automatic upgrade, this does not work, some patches missing, whatever, but upgrade this way does not work and in the end the system is set back to 8.04 again...

3) I have burnt a cd with entire Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx which i had downloaded from the web at ubuntu com; within my 8.04 i want to install all of it, so i want to install 10.04 this way, so a fresh installation via my usb cd (this is also the way i had burnt this cd image; the cd shows all the files so it is the right way burnt), so just not via bios boot, or how to explain this best.

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgrade BIOS For A Pure Machine?

Dec 9, 2010

I'm attempting to upgrade the BIOS in an ASUS 1005HA netbook. The netbook runs SuSE 11.3, and no other OS. All the BIOS utilities on from ASUS are Windows or DOS based. ASUS has a utility titled afudos that apparently flashes the programmable ROM. Running afudos using the dosemu utility suggests that one needs to create a DOS boot drive, execute afudos during a reboot with the new ROM image located on the drive.

How does one accomplish said task on a netbook without a floppy disc drive? Do I create a bootable DOS USB flash drive that contains just afudos and the new bios flash rom upgrade? And if so, how does one do this? As a side issue, it looks like all the major motherboard vendors do not support Linux. That is, all the motherboard drivers require Windows or DOS.

Ubuntu / Apple :: PPC G3 Upgrade Fails?

Sep 2, 2010

I have a G3 Mac using the 6.06 PPC version of Ubuntu. The Update Manager stated there is the update to PPC 8.04 LTS so I went ahead and updated it. After 6 hours of downloading and updating, now it only boots to a blank/black screen as if it is trying to use a non-native resolution. One time I did hear the login (drum) sound but still nothing on the screen. Any way I can boot into a cli to troubleshoot this? During the entire booting process I only see black screens, a few text screens (yaboot, then another with Loading Please wait), one has the typing cursor at the top left for about 1 minute. I can hear the hard drive running and searching as if all is working and loading, just nothing on the screen.

I tried the same thing a few months ago and the only way to get it working was to put in the 6.06 alt PPC CD and format/reinstall.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 10.04 To 10.10 Fails?

Jan 10, 2011

In trying to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10, the installation fails when checking software channels. The error basically says that there are breaks, broken depends and unmet dependencies. Yet Package Manager shows that there are no broken packages and mostly everything is running OK except for the Suspend option which doesn't work in 10.04 on a good number of various laptops. I am using an IBM Thinkpad R51 laptop with 1.5 GHz and 512 MB RAM. I have never had a problem like this with any Ubuntu upgrade in the past. How can I get past this problem and upgrade to 10.10? Log files available upon request. If log files needed, Someone on Launchpad said it's because I have third party software installed. But, this never happened before with previous Ubuntu upgrades.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade 9.10->10.04 Fails To Boot

Jun 10, 2010

Dual boot Windows XP SP3 & Ubuntu 9.10 on a single hdd, w/2 partitions. Booted to Ubuntu and upgraded online. XP boots fine, but Ubuntu, not so much; a msg about /dev not found, followed by a shell login prompt. I suspect a grub problem, but haven't been able to find a definitive answer. Since I can at least boot XP, I do not want to do anything that would screw that up and leave me with no bootable OS. I did the "upgrade" shortly after 10.04 was released. Is there a way to reliably fix this w/o possibly screwing up my ability to boot XP, the only OS I can boot? I have no Ubuntu 10.04 disk, as I used their upgrade online option.

Ubuntu :: 10.04: Latest Upgrade Fails To Boot

hd0,10
grub> root (hd0,10)
grub> setup (hd0,10)

Now this no longer works with whatever grub 10.04 uses, I suspect it is grub2? How do I restore grub to the specific partition I need and NOT to MBR? I have a different boot loader and this boot loader is directed to Ubuntu's boot partition.... Since I cannot boot directly to Ubuntu's boot partition I am perhaps left with only LiveCD to do the recovery, right?

Ubuntu Networking :: After Upgrade To 10 From 9.x Wireless Fails

Nov 23, 2010

I upgraded from 9.x to 10.10. Under 9.x my wireless usb dongle worked correctly. After upgrade it does not. I checked the dongle on another machine and it works correctly. I inserted a usb memory stick and the system found it as a drive correctly. I assume from this that both the dongle and usb port are ok. The wireless device is a D-Link G122 A2 which is on the supported list (it ran out of the box on 9.x). The link light did not even come on. So I installed ndiswrapper and the windows D-Link driver (note that this was not needed in 9.x). Now the link light comes on and the wireless router is found but the unit will still not connect.

The log file entries on dongle insertion are as follows:

It appears that the problem is with wlan0 not being ready. If this is the case how do I make it ready?

Ubuntu Installation :: Automatic Upgrade To 11.04 Fails?

May 1, 2011

The Update Manager has tried to upgrade me to version 11 three times now, and fails each time.

First I get a warning, that probably isn't important: "Third party sources disabled

Some third party entries in your sources.list were disabled. You can re-enable them after the upgrade with the 'software-properties' tool or your package manager."

After the upgrade I get this:

"Could not install the upgrades The upgrade has aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

Upgrade complete The upgrade has completed but there were errors during the upgrade process."

The console has about six messages similar to this, all complaining about the vnc-e package:

"warning, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/available' near line 10992 package 'vnc-e': error in Version string '4.4.3_r16583': invalid character in version number"

Ubuntu Installation :: Fails To Boot After Upgrade To 11.04?

Aug 1, 2011

I just upgraded to ubuntu 11.04 but now all the kernels fail to boot. The resolution of grub changed and the older kernels are put into a 'previous kernels' folder. The most recent kernel halts at the message '* Stopping userspace bootsplash [ OK ]' and the previous kernels fail with the message 'Unlink after no-irq. Controller is probably using the wrong IRQ',

or show the background of the login screen with just a white box.

I think the cause is that I have an ATI graphics card (HD Radeon 3650), because on my 2 other computers ubuntu upgrades fine and they have NVIDEA graphics cards.

As a last resort I tried installing different distro's like Linux Mint but it also gived me the 'unlink after no-irq' message.
