Ubuntu :: Changing Permission On Lampp .conf Files?
Apr 14, 2011
How can modify httpd-xampp.conf's permission on my opt/lampp/etc/extra/ directory? I tried chmod-ing it on terminal, there's no error message whatsoever on the terminal but it still can't be modified.

I've been scanning the apache2 docs for the past few days and have not come up with an answer my following issue:
In my httpd.conf file, at the very end, I have the line
Include conf/vhosts/vhost_*.conf
However, when I run apache checkconfig or try to start apache, it gives me the error:
httpd: Syntax error on line 993 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Could not open configuration file /etc/httpd/conf/vhosts/vhost_1.conf: Permission denied
It appears as if the Include line is correct - in terms of it grabbing the first virtual host conf file. However, I'm confused on the permissions. the /etc/httpd folder is owned by root:root, as are the subfolders. As a test, I chown'd the conf/vhost folder combination and all the vhost files to apache:apache to see if that made a difference, and it appeared to make no difference at all. The log files don't contain anything (assumed because apache isn't starting). If I place the contents of the vhosts in a singular vhosts.conf it works - with the permissions set to root:root. I'd like to avoid having to use one vhosts conf for the configuration I'm trying to achieve - as it would make my life a lot easier.

I am using Xampp on ubuntu 10.04 and I have set my document root to a folder in my home directory for ease of use with netbeans. There are several times where I have to manually go and change the permission to 755. If you just place a file in the directory it does not default to 755, seems odd since the document root folder is in my home directory. Chmod works fine but I was wondering is their a way to make all files or folders added to my document root to default to 755?

I had Fedora 8 installed in few clients and a server (same server for NFS and NIS), and NIS and NFS configured, and was working fine. Yesterday, I upgraded few client computers to Fedora 15 (server is still same), and configured NFS and NIS client. NFS is working fine, I can see home directories.
For NIS: ypwhich, ypcat passwd gives me correct uutput, ypbind is running. The problem is, I can't login to NIS client. The error is: Permission denied, please try again. My nssswitch.conf is

My Internet connection runs slow and jerky, but can be fixed by using the Google public nameservers instead of the default one in this file. Problem is, the changes keep being reverted, even when I chmoded the file to have read-only permissions by everyone.
How can I change the nameserves permanently?

I dont want to turn off checking for .htaccess files because some directorys have this file and use it.

I just setup a FireWire audio interface. Everything works fine, except for I need rw-rw-rw- permissions on /dev/fw0. I can always sudo chmod 666 /dev/fw0 just before setting the thing up, but then it will be gone on the next rebooting. The solution to modify /etc/udev/rules.d/020-permissions.rules (which is for Ubuntu Breezy) doesn't go well for Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick because there is no /etc/udev/rules.d directory.

I couldn't able to change file permission of files residing under /media/* Under /media all the NTFS partitions are mounted manually (gnome GUI) using root password. File properties of file under those NTFS partition shows SELinux context is "fusefs_t". I guess this is prevention from changing permission of file. How can I over come this?

It's been a short while since I had to put lampp on ubuntu 10.04. But, nevertheless I got it running eventually. I cannot seem to get it working on 10.10. Has anybody had experience with this yet? If so, what did you do to get it to work? Also, what differences does anybody know of that is preventing it from installing on 10.10 via the routes it would install on 10.04?

We want to build a couple internal web apps for about 150 people to use, maybe 10 concurrently of any one app/site. LAMPP seems to be pretty simple to use for all it does, but their website has the following disclaimer at the bottom of this post, and there's some people here, programmers who like to make things way more intense/"cool" for programmers than they need to be for a small shop, who agrue that it shouldn't be used in production. I'm not really sure our internal 150 people classify as the type of "production" they are referring to below, I think they more mean a public facing site. We're never going to grow any bigger than this people-wise, or ever make these public facing sites. Just looking for some advice, as lampp seems very easy to use, as well as easy to backup and restore the entire lampp folder and get going on another server quickly in the event of a disaster.
As mentioned before, XAMPP is not meant for production use but only for developers in a development environment. The way XAMPP is configured is to be open as possible and allowing the developer anything he/she wants. For development environments this is great but in a production environment it could be fatal.

I inherited a project that someone built in lampp, and I need create new SSL certs.
So I go to do so and it says that OpenSSL is not installed and to apt-get and install it.(Ubuntu by the way)
So before I did so, I wondered if it would cause any problems...since it was supposed to be part of the lampp stack.
