I have tried many different ways to interact with the mysql to reset the root mysql pass. This is what I got to right now

I went away this weekend and everything with my mysql server was working great. I got home on sunday, and I found that my web pages couldn't be displayed because they were unable to gain access to the mysql database.
I am now not able to log into mysql using root or debian-sys-maint. I get error messages.
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)
I have tried loading mysql in safe mode, and changing the passwords, but this does little to help me.
I am unable to retart my services without them failing, so after making the changes i have to manually kill the processes for mysql to get it to stop. After doing that i try to start mysql up, and it gives me a .sock error. I will post some of the errors in my next post, but if anyone has a general idea what i can try to manually override the passwords or reset them. I did read that i can reset the debian-sys-maint password using the msql/rm.conf , but i am unable to log on as root to change the password

Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an Upstart job, you may also use the start( utility, e.g. start mysql mysql start/running, process 20301.
Is there any way i could install mysql without setting the password for the root account during installation? preferably using the command line.

I was following the instructions here and the installation when fine,
except that I never got a screen to set the root password.
When I try to set the password using these instructions, following either
"If you have never set a root password for MySQL" $ mysqladmin -u root password NEWPASSWORD
OR, since the first method failed me, then: "However, if you want to change (or update) a root password, then you need to use following command" $ mysqladmin -u root -p'oldpassword' password newpass
Either way, it fails. Question:
1) why am I not being prompted to set a root password during installation?
2) what can I do now to fix this??
I am trying to learn Mysql, so don't presume I know anything about command syntax (cookbook instructions) For example, the first command above,I tried with with NEWPASSWORD in quotes, and then without. Likewise for the second command.
I have setup the Red Hat system and installed MySQL through the Add / Remove Program. I have RHEL 5.4.
When MySQL is being started manually it is being started as root. However, when MySQL is being started using the services command it is started as the user MySQL and it doesn't work.
How can I start MySQL service as root? Or is there another way to fix that issue.
Let me know if you need more information (giving details on how to get it would be nice too).
I forgot my root password for mysql, and after some searching I found several solutions to fix it. But none of them seem to work.I tried this article http://ubuntu.flowconsult.at/en/mysq...root-password/ with starting mysql with the --skip-grant-tables option. The problem is that nothing happens, it just hangs.Also tried the the --init-file option, that one runs fine, at least it returned to the command line. But the sql query in the file to which it point doesnt seem to do anything. The password wasn't changed to the one I specified in the sql file.Any idea what could be going on here, and how I could fix it?

I have been backing this up using cron as the root user, but another admin in my company insists that we create a separate user to perform this task for security reasons. I have created a user, created a group, added the user to the group, but still cannot access /var/lib/mysql/mysql directory as that user. I would like that user to have +rx access only.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI Installed the maintained package, Day one everything worked fine, I set a dummy database and work on it from VM windows. Day two weird errors, I searched around couldn't find the problem, the error was related to The root user losing privileges. I don't remember the exact error. So I decided to Completely remove the DB with apt-get remove mysql-Server-5.1. It gets stuck during the uninstall, I left the machine for a day and a half to uninstall mysql. I realized it was no use, I tried to Restart and try again, but I am getting the same thing.

I can't progress I am at the brink now, my only option right now is format, but I don't wanna do that. This setup is almost 5 years old and I have gone with many ups and downs with it. From Windows to 8.04 to 8.10 to 9.04 to 9.10 to now 10.04 each year loving the resilience of Ubuntu and the Linux architecture. I don't want to believe that this has killed my spree.
Is there a non-root, portable distribution of MySQL for Linux? I need to do some testing on a server that I do not have root access to.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using an older redhat system (2.6.9-22.ELsmp) here which is running an older mysql (server version: 4.1.12). I don't think that's the source of the problems. I believe that have understood things rightly when I say that the mysql root user is unrelated to the linux root user ... in my case I believe the root user to be the unix user mysql. So when I connect to the server (local host from a local terminal) I use:

This gets me on, however I seem unable to do anything like create database or alter privilege. I wonder if its related to my finding no database called mysql?

I get an access dented when i try to open up the mysql editing page on webmin. Can any of you tell me if there is a way to change it back to hosts=localhost I am using webmin 1.5.30 on Centos 5.5. I am hoping I can change it by command line or if I can access the config files and change it that way?
