General :: Non-Root Portable Install Of MySQL Server?
Mar 3, 2010Is there a non-root, portable distribution of MySQL for Linux? I need to do some testing on a server that I do not have root access to.

View 2 RepliesI have tried many different ways to interact with the mysql to reset the root mysql pass. This is what I got to right now
Code:
#!/bin/sh
newpass=$1
service mysqld stop
mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables --skip-networking &
echo "use mysql;" >> /tmp/mysql_pass_reset.txt
echo "update user set password=PASSWORD("$newpass") where User="root";" >> /tmp/mysql_pass_reset.txt

i am using liferay5.2(mysql included in the download pack) on fedora. while liferay is working fine but i cannot connect to mysql.i am getting the error
[
[root@localhost ~]# ln -s /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock /tmp
[root@localhost ~]# /etc/init.d/mysqld start

i didnt find the mysql.sock file in the location /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock. i cannot find the portal-ext.properties file also to make intial settings.
I'm running Debian Testing and am confounded by a new problem.mysql -u root -p works great.mysql -u mythtv -p doesn't. This is a first for me.I did the usual as mysql root: mysql> create user 'mythtv'@'127.0.0.1' identified by 'mythtv';Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.01 sec)
mysql> grant all on *.* to 'mythtv'@'127.0.0.1';
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)
mysql> flush privileges;

for resetting the root user's password. Actually, I am using www.linuxzoo.net for online practice of Linux and have MySQL installed on it. But I forgot the password I set. There was no password by default set for the root user. So, I just trying setting a password last week. Now I am not getting what I did.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI have a question in regards to enabling root remote access to the server.I am trying to use the mysql workbenchit kicks back an error saying "Access denied for user 'root'@'10.x.x.x' (using password: YES)" But I am able to login locally on the server.How do I enable root to long on remotely from any workstation?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using an older redhat system (2.6.9-22.ELsmp) here which is running an older mysql (server version: 4.1.12). I don't think that's the source of the problems. I believe that have understood things rightly when I say that the mysql root user is unrelated to the linux root user ... in my case I believe the root user to be the unix user mysql. So when I connect to the server (local host from a local terminal) I use:
Code:
-bash-3.00$ mysql -u mysql -p
and enter a blank password
This gets me on, however I seem unable to do anything like create database or alter privilege. I wonder if its related to my finding no database called mysql?
-bash-3.00$ mysql -u mysql -p
Enter password:
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or g.
Your MySQL connection id is 11 to server version: 4.1.12
Type 'help;' or 'h' for help. Type 'c' to clear the buffer.
mysql> show databases;
+----------+
| Database |
+----------+
| test |
+----------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)
Although I understand that show databases will not show things I have no priv to see. Does this mean my settings for the users are all screwed? How do I rectify this situation? Some other (perhaps) useful information.
Code:
[root ~]# cat /etc/my.cnf
[mysqld]
datadir=/var/lib/mysql
socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
# Default to using old password format for compatibility with mysql 3.x
# clients (those using the mysqlclient10 compatibility package).
old_passwords=1
[mysql.server]
user=mysql
basedir=/var/lib
[mysqld_safe]
err-log=/var/log/mysqld.log
pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid
So my BASEDIR seems to be nothing like is suggested in the documentation at [URL].
I've tried every manual there is for creating new MySQL users ... but without success.
I keep getting
Code:
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'test'@'localhost' (using password: YES) even though I just created it with all privileges ... WITH a password that I DO remember .
Fortunately I still have access via the MySQL root user (so I try not to disturb that user, because I have had computers with THAT account not accessible as well - even WITH resetting the password via skip-grant-tables).
I'm a Linux newbie. I want to install mysql-5.5.15-linux2.6-x86_64.tar.gz on a Debian box offline without using the apt command. How can I do this?

I get an access dented when i try to open up the mysql editing page on webmin. Can any of you tell me if there is a way to change it back to hosts=localhost I am using webmin 1.5.30 on Centos 5.5. View 4 Replies View RelatedI think this goes here, but I'm not sure. I decided that XAMPP had been troublesome enough. MySQL never worked. So I decided to instal the LAMP stack offered by YaST. I went about installing it thinking that it would all work. But it seems that I was wrong. So I try to start mysql, and here's what I get:
Code:

I am using Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS x64. I would like to backup my /var/lib/mysql directory as a non-root user.
I have been backing this up using cron as the root user, but another admin in my company insists that we create a separate user to perform this task for security reasons. I have created a user, created a group, added the user to the group, but still cannot access /var/lib/mysql/mysql directory as that user. I would like that user to have +rx access only.
I set up a servber on my local machine, & also PHp - Both working fine.I'm trying to load up MYSQL i have installed it, & *can* start/stop the server. however if I do anything else with it, I get this error :-
Quote:
root@gordon-desktop:~# sudo mysqladmin -u root -h localhost password MYPASSWORD
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'
Query :-
1) How do I know MYSQL is actually active ? (apart from the message it says that its statrted (or stopped).
2) Is there a way to
a) Find out the usernames that are recorded on the MYSQL server ?
b) set / RESET the 'root' username (I know MYSQL root user is different to PC root user)
c) anything else I can do on the PHP / website code to see if MYSQL is working
(as yet, no tables / databases etc have been set up - as I can't get past this error message - I get the same error when setting up a database.)
Ps I did allow my usermname (when logged in to ubuntu) to edit / create files in the /usr/www/ directory (but it is still OWNED by 'root' - that directory)
I am using RHN system. Today, I were running Yum, some errors appeared as the below. Before, I had never such problems. I tried to search some solutions in Google, but can not find it.

I'm trying to install CentOS on one of those BSI portable boxes. When installing, it gives this error:"Errno 30 Read-only file system." Which is weird because it's obviously not read only, and doesn't fail right away. It's an IDE optical drive, and a SATA hard drive. I thought it was the SATA optical drive to IDE HDD install issue that has been seen before, but not the case here. The disc is in known-working condition.

I'm trying to install the squeezebox server software in Ubuntu 9.10 and I'm getting an error when it tries to install mysql-server. Seems like people have run into this before [URL]... but so far, I can't find a solution.

i'm trying to install mysql-server on my pc. so i type this on my terminal:
Code:
sudo apt-get install mysql-server
it starts to download & install everything, but when it has to configure the server, it simply "freeze" and does nothing!
how can i solve that? i've tried to purge and reinstall, but it was no use!
I was running Ubuntu 9.10 and had the MySQL datadir moved to a different directory, /store/mysql. Due to a filesystem problem on the upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04, I was forced to reinstall. My /store/mysql was copied back over, changes to /etc/mysql/my.cnf and /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld, but MySQL hangs when I go to start it and nothing is showing up in any of the logs. How do I get MySQL to recognize the datadir from the previous install?

I just installed Centos 5.5 on one of my systems today and something is eluding me. Basically I had a web site and forum software (phpBB, but I don't think it's that, other forum software like Xoops does the same thing) running on Fedora 13, and I copied it over to the new Centos installation. Apache is running fine and displays a PHP test file and .html files just fine.
MySQL seems to be fine, I can log into that, show databases etc. Just can't get any forum software to know there is MySQL there. I did change the path of the site, and the databases, and edited /etc/my.cnf and /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf to reflect that. Thought I made the needed changes in /etc/php.ini but who knows. Seemed like everything should have tar'd up and moved easy, but not the case...
