General :: Use Ghostscript To Convert Multi-page PDF Into Single JPG?

Jul 27, 2010

I know Ghostscript can convert PDFs to JPGs, and in the case of a multi-page PDF, can rip each page to an individual JPG. But is it possible to have it rip them to one JPG, so that the pages are pasted below each other, e.g. the top half of the JPG is page 1, the bottom half is page 2? Or do I have to use another program (and can ImageMagick do this?) to combine the JPG pages into one image?

Software :: Using Imagemagick To Convert Numerous Jpg Files To Single Pdf

Apr 14, 2009

I have a large number of scanned JPG images that I would like to convert into a single PDF file -- each image will be on its own page, and I want the pages to be in a certain order. What is the command for ImageMagick to take a batch of JPGs and convert them to PDF, and order the pages in a certain way.

(by the way: I am working on writing a Gentoo ebuild for convert2pdf at the moment, but until I get that worked out, I'd like to figure out how to do this using Imagemagick, which is already in the portage tree, and already installed)

Software :: Convert A Bunch Of .ogg Files To Mp3 To Play On IPod - Unable To Convert With Sound Converter?

May 3, 2009

I have Ubuntu 9.04 and just installed Sound Converter. I am trying to convert a bunch of .ogg files to mp3 to play on my iPod and it's not working so well. In the Sound Converter options I have is set to convert to high quality mp3. I choose the folder that the files are in and after a moment (slow laptop) Sound Converter populates, I hit 'convert' and it shows that the conversion completes in two seconds. All that it did was create the new folder structure of artist/album but there is nothing in there. Not sure what I am missing. I used Sound Converter before and it worked fine.

Software :: FLAC Files To Convert Or Not To Convert To CD-DA?

Dec 24, 2010

I have a lot of .flac files downloaded from several sites. Most of them come with a .cue file, and the .jpg with the cover, etc. It seems it is the intention of the uploader that one rebuilds the original CDDA. However, if I had a stand-alone CD/DVD player with flac I would hardly see the point of converting the flac to cdda. Furthermore, I could even play the flacs with a software player although, in this case, the audio quality would not be so good due to the noise picked up by the signal from the PC digital circuits.

General :: How To Encrypt A Single File

Sep 14, 2010

I need to temporarily store a file containing sensitive data in a public server, in a secure way. I think that encrypting the whole file would be much more secure than creating a passworded .zip encrypted file, because they could be subject of brute force attacks. Attacking a whole file of unknow format is harder, I think. I thought of something like the command:

Code:
$ programidontknow --encrypt mysensitive.file --output-file mumblerumble.file
then the program asks interactively for a password)
$ ls
mysensitive.file mumblerumble.file

So I get one file that may look like junk. I tried to search how to do it with GnuPG. But it seems that GnuPG needs much configuration I dont want to do. I simply want to type the password one time to get the file. It doesnt need to retain any configuration for what I want to do. In similar scenario, I would want to do this on a machine/account that is not mine.

OpenSUSE :: Remap A Single Key (or Keymapping In General)?

May 13, 2010

I want to remap a single key on my keyboard. This is the key which will delete or in numpad mode will put a '.' or a ',' in my case.I want the ',' to be a '.' .So I found out that xev gives me some information about the keys.So I tried something likexmodmap -e 'keycode 91 = period'Which is not what I want. Because than the delete command gets overwritten instead of the comma. So I triedxmodmap -e 'keysym 0x0 = period'Which looked like a endless loop to me. 0x0 is also quite strange, isn't it? But this is what xev gave me for numlock activated and the comma-key.The difference between the delete and the comma is the "state".Xev returns for delete:

Code:
KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x4800001,
root 0x10c, subw 0x0, time 1934052, (412,580), root:(416,605),

General :: Why MemTest Repeating Single Test

Jun 20, 2010

Bought computer 11 months ago, immediately there were problems. What would happen is, when I logged in after a long period of shut down, the system would BSOD. Then I would restart and everything would be fine, until the next time I shut down for a long time (8ish hours) and got back on. I sent the laptop in (a couple times) and they eventually replaced the RAM and the BSODs went away. This is all on Windows 7 (well started on Vista, switched to Windows 7).

I recently set up a dual boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04. I'm experiencing crashes on Ubuntu (the whole system just freezes, can't operate mouse, keyboard, or anything) and the behavior is similar. When I log on after a long period of shut down, the system will crash, but if I restart (actually I have to wait 10 minutes before I restart, if I restart immediately it will crash again) then it is fine, until the next period of long shutdown.

So I'm thinking it's bad RAM, so I downloaded Memtest and am testing each of my sticks (they are each 2GB) individually in the same connector thing (don't know what it is called, whatever the sticks attach to). The test for the first one passed with flying colors. However, the second one is having problems. On test #2, the memtest repeats itself, continuously looping through 0-32767 errors on the right side.

My laptop is an Asus G50VT
The 2 most interesting lines...
Highest Error Address: 000fffffffc - 4095.9 MB // does this make sense? 4095.9 MB on a 2GB stick?
Test 2: 32767 // the 32767 loops back around to 0 and repeats

General :: How To Flatten Single File Directories

May 1, 2011

I've spent ages trying to build this and had a good look around for a way to do it. I have a directory tree which contains a set of folders and files. Some of the folders contain more than one file but most contain only a single one. I'm trying to move all of the files which are on their own in directories one level below the root into the root. E.g:

Root is: /volume3
Single file in a sub folder: /volume3/20110103/20110103.log
File should end up as: /volume3/20110103.log

I know how to flatten the entire structure fairly easily but its the conditional part which I can't figure out how to do.
