So I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu dual booted on my computer, and the default is Ubuntu. I was wondering if it was possible to make it such that the default is the last booted system? As in, if I was in Windows, and restarted, then GRUB would highlight Windows.The mainmotivation is to for when the computer restarts automatically (say after an update). I may not be around during the 10 seconds before it boots into Ubuntu.

how do I uninstall Java? Tried with Synaptic and apt-get remove, but uninstalling sun-java6 automatically adds default-jre (openjdk) and uninstalling openJdk automatically installs sun-java ... but I don't want ANY Java on my machine - am I missing something? Already thought I maybe have a package that requires SOME kind of Java, but how do I find out?

Older distributions required manually installing Grub to the second drive, to boot if the first drive fails. I found different statements about how this is handled since 9.10.e.g.

I like to load other distro's via their own grub.
So at the min I add an entry to code...
however when update-grub2 is run it also adds its own entries (for arch linux).
Is there a way to stop the update-grub2 script automatically adding a entry on a specific partition ?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded grub -> grub2 on my karmic box. Grub2 worked when chainloaded from legacy grub, and also the first time I tried it standalone. Both times the grub2 menu came up.
I ran vbeinfo at a grub2 command prompt, and found my monitor's native res listed - 1280x1024. I added that to my /etc/defaults/grub and then ran update-grub, and rebooted. This time no menu appeared and the default entry booted straight away. I suspected that the resolution was not supported for some reason or that the way I entered it in the config file was wrong, so I commented it out again in /etc/default/grub, and ran update-grub again - to no avail.
I have since tried lots of different formats for the GRUB_GFXMODE, such as 1280x1024@24, 1280x1024x24, and the normal 640x480, but none of them give me a grub menu. I have even tried using GRUB_TERMINAL=console, to no avail. I have checked the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file each time to make sure my changes were put there correctly by update-grub. I have also made sure that timeout was set to 10, and the hidden timeout was set to 0. My GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet".
I have reinstalled grub2, grub-pc, and grub-common, and I have dpkg-reconfigured them all too. I have no idea what to do to get my grub menu showing up again.
I've read "Can't choose my 2nd HDD to install Ubuntu" and "How to move GRUB?".but my problem seems not exactly the same as them. I have three drives:
1) SATA drive on first port with Windows on it
2) IDE drive with Ubuntu9.10 on it
3) new SATA drive for Ubuntu10.04
I want to remove the IDE drive and put it in a safe place as a backup.
I installed 9.10 on the new SATA, intending to see if I could get Upgrade Mangager to offer me Lucid Lynx. I should have unplugged the IDE drive but I didn't. Anyway, the Ubuntu9.10 CD installer did find the new SATA disk which I had partitioned using my original 9.10 setup on the IDE. It did put Ubuntu onto the first partition of the new SATA where I wanted it. However, if I disable the IDE in BIOS I get just a blinking underscore at the top left conrer of the screen on reboot. Why would the installer do this to me? Nevermind, perhaps a better question is this: How do I check where GRUB2 has been installed and if, as I suspect, it's put GRUB2 on the IDE, what's the simplest and safest way to get GRUB2 put on the boot sector of the new SATA disk?

Did a fresh install of 64-bit Natty on day 1, and have an irksome issue when logging in. Once I'm logged in, Keyring prompts me to type the default keyring password. This happens every time I log in.
The problem is, the option to unlock the keyring automatically at login is dimmed, and only the other 3 options are selectable.
I opened the "Passwords and Encryption Keys" applet and saw 2 entries under "passwords", both named "Network secret for Auto [my network name]/802-11-wireless-security/psk". I see no option here to allow either of these to automatically unlock at login.
how I can get Ubuntu to log into my wireless network automatically instead of asking for the default keyring password each time after log in?
I seem to have added all my passwords to the default keyring while using a live session. Now when I log in, I am then asked to unlock my default keyring. I thought if you logged in with a password this wasn't necessary. When I look at my passwords and encryption keys, all my passwords appear in the default folder, and nothing is in my login folder. Is there a way to migrate these passwords. Or is there a way to automatically unlock my default keyring?

I have looked at a sample debian_theme file mine looks the same except for the name of the pic. the 'fi' is the one after the EOF.When I pasted in the image name I put .tng so I back spaced that out and there is still a '.' after the image name.Can I just restore the 05_debian_theme file without rebuilding the grub?

I successfully edited the Grub cfg file change the colors of the Grub menu, but I'd like to change the text color as I watch the modules load and can't seem to do it.
