Ubuntu :: "As Superuser" Text In The Title Bar Of Ubiquity
Feb 27, 2010
This screenshot alone is alarming: Ubiquity (the installer) knows that it can only be run as root, yet displays the "as superuser" text in parentheses anyway. Why is this?
P.S. I am running Lucid Alpha 3 Daily build.

how I would go about centering the text in the title bar for the Ambiance theme. Currently it is on the left side after the buttons, but I want to center it in the middle of the bar. Does anyone know how I could accomplish this?

owners out there they released the KindleforPC program today. As expected it's only Windows and (soon) Mac, BUT it WILL run on Linux under Wine with only a couple of oddities. (Such as not being able to see the text on dropdown menus and title bars. If you click into a book it'll load for reading, you just can't see any of the menuing.

So when I upgraded to Slack64 13.1 on my asus MB homebrewed desktop and Slack 13.1 on my compaq presario a900 laptop, I started having issues with the xterm title (in Terminal--not Konsole) being too dynamic. By "too dynamic" I mean that I can't actually change the title. The dynamic title (from my .bashrc) is basically just pwd. Whenever I try to set the title (via terminal->set title (menu)), I changes it for a split second, and then reverts back to the dynamic title.
This is merely a petty annoyance, so to get around it, I added an xtitle function that I grabed somewhere online (just echos "33]0;$*07"). So for nano-ing some file, I'd type:xtitle some_file.txt; nano some_file.txt
That works just fine (kind of annoying to type though). running xtitle alone won't actually change the name either though (I'm pretty sure it's the same command as what terminal does anyway). That is, running: xtitle some_file.txt
changes the title for a split second, and the reverts back to my old pwd. What I really want is to have it dynamically name it "some_file.txt" whenever I use nano, but that appears to be a functionality of zsh (with the preexec() fxn).I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if you have a fix for it.

Everything worked 100% great untill I change color depth to 16 bits.I do not want 24 Bits, I want 16 Bits. I have good reasons. Never had this problem in Gutsy 7.10 ...I deeply regret in upgrading to 9.10 ...
My video card:
Gforce 7950 GX2
Changes to xorg.conf file: Firstly, I saved it at 16 color depth with the sudo nvidia-settings and by clicking on the save to xorg.conf file Button. Rebooted computer....... It worked, saved file, and I got the following bugs:
*Cannot move windows by dragging their title bars.
*Cannot see close "X" Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Minimize Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Maximize Button in the title bar.
Went back to 24 bits and problem got resolved. Then i tryed: I did sudo gedit xorg.conf I changed all the 24's with 16's ... Rebooted computer....... It works GOOD... BUT: I got the same bugs from before. I will retype them below
*Cannot move windows by dragging their title bars.
*Cannot see close "X" Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Minimize Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Maximize Button in the title bar.
My xorg.conf file:

# nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildd@palmer) Sun Feb 1 20:21:04 UTC 2009

[Test with lubuntu 10.04 in VirtualBox]
I try the menu "Install Lubuntu" from LiveCD but it does not work. And I remaster Lubuntu follow the methods LiveCDCustomizationFromScratch
and make the custom initrd with preceed file inside to use the option "automatic-ubiqiuty" but it does not work too.
Is this a bug of Ubiqiuty in Lubuntu?

I am trying to make a Custom Ubuntu Live CD using Remastersys and an installer for the Live CD using Ubiquity. I was able to successfully create a Custom live CD using remastersys and when I boot from the custom Live CD the grub correctly displays the Custom Live CD Name that I specified during the ISO file creation using remastersys. However, when I install from the Live CD that I created, using Ubiquity, after reboot, the Grub menu displays as Ubuntu and not the Custom Label. How can I change it so that after installation, the custom Live CD name is displayed?

I just made a custom ubuntu, following these instructions [url], and it works great, but during the install ubiquity tries to check the cd for extra packages... and prompts an error... but it doesn't have any packages nor it is needed to have... i just want that ubiquity skips this instruction.... I'm guessing the correct pressed instruction will solve this, but I can't find any mention to this...

I am re-installing Ubuntu onto my desktop PC which has Windows 7, openSUSE 11.2 and Fedora Core 12. First I tried Ubuntu 9.10. Near the end of the installation the machine reboots and the monitor shows the following message:
"Ubiquity.components.partman failed - Exit code 10. Further info in /var/log/syslog"
Tried again with Ubuntu 10.04 beta2 with same problem.
How can I view and read /var/log/syslog if Ubuntu fails to be installed and therefore I cannot access this log?

I am trying to install Lubuntu on a 2GB USB drive. The (L)ubuntu installer (ubiquity) disables the "forward" button since the minimum space required is 3.6gb, although the Lubuntu installation actually is <2gb.I read somewhere this was a handset value but I haven't been able to find out how to override this?

So I'm trying to install the icon package called Token-Dark. I figured out that I have to move the icons to usr/share/icons. When I try to copy the file I get the error "permission denied". I tried to change the permissions on the folder, but it says that I'm not the root, or the owner of the files, so I can't change anything.

I get tired of the ugly default GNOME theme that rears its head when I'm doing something as superuser. I understand why it's desirable for these windows with elevated privileges to look different, but I'd like to choose a different theme.
So... what terminal command do I run to bring up the Appearance window? My thought is if I simply run it with "sudo", any changes made would affect the appearance of future elevated-privilege windows. Does that sound right, or am I out in left field?

I have a regular password and a masterpassword, but sometimes I am being asked for a superuserpassword? I have no scripting experience and a very basic idea of how linux works. I am trying to get enough of a handle on this OS, so I can use it comfortably.

I'm trying to change the owner of a /var/www/example/var I've changed all the /var content (chown www-data /var instead of chown www-data var ). I tried executing chown root /var, but now I have problems with Postfix...
In my webpages I use different commands to send mails:
- The phpMailer class
- The mail() command
The phpmailer is working, but not mail()
When I try mail() I've these messages in /var/log/mail.log:
Code:
Dec 30 09:42:31 zeus postfix[3829]: error: to submit mail, use the Postfix sendmail command
Dec 30 09:42:31 zeus postfix[3829]: fatal: the postfix command is reserved for the superuser
Terminal mail command is not working either.
In my /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini I've this configuration:
Code:
[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
; [URL]
;SMTP = localhost
; http://php.net/smtp-port
;smtp_port = 25
; For Win32 only.
; [URL]
;sendmail_from = dstreich.girona.ics@gencat.cat
; For Unix only. You may supply arguments as well (default: "sendmail -t -i").
; [URL]
sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/postfix
I also tried sendmail -t -i without luck.

So, I'm not quite sure what the difference is? Is it that sudo allows you to "borrow" superuser privileges, whilst su allows you to actually log in as superuser? Also, when I sudo [command] and get prompted for a password, after I input it, things work just fine, but if I su, and then get prompted for a password, I can't log in as superuser... Why is this?

Im comming from ubuntu/mint and one of the things I got used too was doing something like "sudo nautilus" or "sudo gedit" and similar things. In Suse 11.3 I always get errors like the following
(gedit:6115): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
kate: cannot connect to X server
Could not parse arguments: Cannot open display:
or similar variations of these. What can I so to prevent this from happening? even if I do "su" and try from there it doesnt always work.I like Suse as it feels more professional then ubuntu, but I am trying to make it as user friendly.

mount an NFS directory as a regular user (which doesn't have sudo rights) because a suitable entry (i.e. with the user option) is defined in /etc/fstab file. But, when I mount it, I am not the owner of it! The owner is the default superuser of the system. So I don't have write permissions in the mounted directory.

It's been a while, I haven't used Linux since version 6 or 7, and at that time, Anaconda gave you a choice of which level of SELinux to install - as I remember, I chose the "relaxed" version... but this time, with Version 11, I was not given any choice of which level of SELinux to use. I was automatically forced into a USER (drone) account with no administrative or limited administrative capabilities. I have my administrative name and password I assigned during the Anaconda install...but I don't know how to get into the superuser or root account and execute it so that I have full, unvarnished permission to do as I please on MY machine.
First of all, let me explain - This is MY computer and I can do with it exactly as I want. I am the Aministrator and I am the one and only OWNER of this machine. Therefore, I should have automatic access to SuperUser, and if I corrupt something, that is my fault...and its my machine. Cutting through the bull, I would like someone on here to just plain tell me, without cryptic remarks, to give me a step-by-step - The is a HOW TO to access the superuser account, name and password. And - this is HOW TO create a ROOT account with superuser permissions. What I need is a one-two-three this-is-how-to-do-it.
If I mess things up, I merely reinstall Fedora again and start from scratch. I don't care if I screw things up accidentally. What does irritate me is being forced to have a "drone" account on my machine that I own, without even asking me, what I wanted..
