When I plug in my headphones Karmic doesnt detect it. Sound is still playing on the internal speakers. I believe this is a known issue, but haven`t found the workaround/fix for it.

I'm having some trouble configuring my the sound on my laptop. I'm using Alsa. Playing sound is no problem, but when I plug my Koss headphones into the audio jack the laptop speakers continue playing and sound also comes out of my headphones. When I go to alsamixer from cli the sound card only shows 1 master channel so I can't mute the internal laptop speakers.
My specs are.
Lenovo Ideapad s205
Amd Fusion e-350
Crunchbang Statler openbox
Squeeze kernel
2.6.32-5-amd64
I would be okay with completely disabling the internal laptop speakers if that is the easiest solution.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a fully operational PXE boot server, the client boots up and begins the setup process however, fails to detect the hard disk, I have tried with ubuntu 8.10, 9.10 and 10.10 and none of them will see my hard disk, I boot to the cd and it sees the hard disks with no problem, so apparently the pxe boot server isnt serving up the neccesary drivers or something to detect my hard disks properly. They are just IDE drives and like I said, regular cd install detects my drives just fine.So if anyone here has any information that may help shed some light on this issue I would be so grateful

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu9.10 on a USB hard drive attached to my laptop. Laptop has pre-installed XP in the in-built hard-drive. Point to be noted is that my hard-drive is protected via encryption software called Pointsec.
The installation of Ubuntu on the USB hard drive went through fine and I'm able to boot Ubuntu from it.
But now the problem is, GRUB2 fails to detect the Windows XP installation.
Can someone tell me how I can force GRUB2 to boot Windows XP from hd0,0?
The GRUB1 way of configuring /etc/grub/menu.lst does NOT seem to work with GRUB2.
I recently bought a macbook pro 5,5 (unibody) and I'm running both OSX and Ubuntu 9.10. I love the laptop, but I've been having some issues with the touchpad in karmic.
In OSX, I can keep my thumb on the bottom of the touchpad as if it were a button and operate the rest of the touchpad as normal. With my thumb on the bottom of the pad, I can still click and drag and use two finger scrolling.
In ubuntu, I've used the instructions from[url]
If I have a thumb on the touchpad, it always assumes I'm two-finger scrolling. I've tried synclient BottomEdge=600, but it doesn't make any difference.
I'm having one heck of a time getting Ubuntu to run on a Mac Mini. The OS installs flawlessly. It's after the install that the problems start. As soon as I input my username and password the Circle icon for loading appears and nothing happens beyond that point. Mind you I've installed Ubuntu at least 20 times and I'm about fed up with it.I've installed Fedora-PPC and Vine Linux. They both allowed me to login without any problems. View 4 Replies View RelatedI searched through a lot of threads on whether its safe to upgrade from a working Karmic install to Lucid via the upgrade manager. I found a few threads from around 1 month ago where some said it worked, others said they had problems with grub etc.
Does anyone know the current status of this? I would like to upgrade to Lucid but I don't know if its safe. Would it be better to use an install CD instead of the upgrade manager? Do I need to manually install grub rather than let the install program do it? (I think the upgrade manager doesn't give an option it just installs grub after the upgrade)

1. Followed directions for fixing wireless here: [URL] (AirPort) This works fine.
2. Followed directions for fixing sound, which seems to update the kernel, here: [URL] Sound This also works, but then wireless does not work.
If I boot into the older kernel version, I have wireless again, but no sound. If I boot into the newer kernel and try to use the wireless solution above its says I already have that package installed - yet no go with wireless.
I'm having a problem getting the apple remote on my Macbook 2,1 to work with Karmic and am looking for a little advice. The problem, I believe, lies in where Gnome needs to start irexec and irxevent. Running irexrc -d from a terminal gives no output but I can also not find a process running after launch.Running irxevent -d returns 'irxevent: could not connect to socket irxevent: No such file or directory'I have also installed gnome-lirc-properties which (until a recent reboot) reported that there was no IR daemon running.
im running karmic on a macbook pro 5.4. everything worked fine for a couple of months until i upgraded yesterday. (apt-get upgrade) now i'm getting a blank (black) screen when booting right after the splash screen appears tough the system comes up propperly since i can connet using ssh. the xserver is up and running regarding to the logs. i can't even switch to a console (alt-crtl-f1) nor booting in single user mode. the screen gets black after the kernel boot and init starts.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got an iMac 9.1 perfectly triple booted with rEFIt with OSX, Windows 7 64x, and Ubuntu Karmic 64x. My Ubuntu side needs a refresh.
I want to redo the Karmic partition with Lucid, but I'm afraid grub2 will mess up my perfect rEFIt configuration.
I'm worried because when first doing this triple boot, I installed Karmic and rEFIt couldn't read the grub that it installed, so I installed Jaunty's grub and upgraded to Karmic. I guess it's a workaround...
Now, I'm worried Lucid will mess up the rEFIt config.
Couple of questions: Is a new install of Lucid going to mess up my rEFIt configuration? Is there a way to avoid rEFIt bugs? If a new Lucid install won't mess up rEFIt, do I simply install the grub bootloader inside the freshly installed Lucid partition?

When I plug in the headphones into the headphone jack, the sound plays through the headphones but it also plays through the speakers as well at the same time. After reboot, my sound is full and can be put much louder than before. Jack detection works. Some people might have to leave out the power saving options. See below.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've installed Squeeze 2.6.32-5-amd64 on my laptop (Alienware M17X R3, Intel i7 Sandybridge, ATI Technologies Inc Broadway [ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6800 Series])The screen is 17", with maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. After a default install of the operating system, the maximum resolution I can select is 1280 x 1024.My research so far has suggested that I need to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and provide xorg with the necessary resolution.
Again, by default, the xorg.conf file is not created. This leads me to believe that xorg is scanning my hardware at startup and providing me with whatever it thinks is appropriate. I tried following these instructions to generate an xorg.conf file. This process created an xorg.conf file under /root/.
When I copy this xorg.conf file to /etc/X11, I get a blank (i.e. black) screen. Deleting this file restores the default resolution 1280 x 1024.This system is dual booting with Windows 7. Under windows I am able to get a 1920 x 1080 resolution, so I know my hardware is up to it.At this stage I have yet to install the drivers for the Radeon graphics card.What are my options regarding configuring xorg to give me a higher screen resolution?
I have a new F12 install, and my syslog is filling up with messages about USB. I have 2 USB devices plugged in directly to the mobo (bluetooth keyboard receiver, touchscreen), and it keeps redetecting them and then disabling the port for some reason.

But apparently debian package do not offer this useful tool, well, certainly for sidux exclusively.
Is there a package of fw-detect eventually?
