I know within the syntax, you can add options such as -i or -v.When I enter the command rm, I want Terminal to automatically go interactive (which would be the -i option) without me having to add it to the command. Meaning, I'd rather type rm Test.doc than having to include -i like this rm -i Test.doc. This way, whenever I execute the rm command, I won't have to worry about adding the -i option because I know that Terminal will automatically ask me if I want to delete the file or not before I do.

An Icon shows in the panel telling me there was a problem with updating. Attempts to update hangs on waiting for headers @ 99% but ultimately times out. I have not been able to update successfully for some time. Add to this the fact that DeVeDe will not respond. Trying to run DeVeDe from the Applications menu does nothing, running the program from the command line does nothing. Attempts to uninstall return this warning:

On the mbp 5,3 running 10.04, I'm trying to get the screen dimming keys working. Using the tutorial [URL] I followed the instructions for the nvidia-bl-dkms package. Initially upon configuration, the dimming keys work wonderfully, but after a restart, they don't work at all.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am dual-booting Karmic/OS X. I have a MacBook Pro 5,1. When using the keyboard to change the backlight, the graphic in the top left does move to indicate a higher brightness (albeit, it moves extremely slowly).
I, of course, have all the necessary drivers installed.
I have all the packages I needed from the Mactel repository. This has been a problem within Karmic since I've put it on my MBP. There have been several updates from the Mactel repository concerning the Nvidia backlight package (I don't remember exactly what that package is called though). I hope each time that it will fix what is going on, but obviously, it hasn't.
Is there any program that I could use to otherwise change the backlight? When I'm sitting outside it's really difficult to see what's on my screen as it also doesn't automatically respond to the change in environmental brightness by making the screen brighter.
I've noticed that my field keys don't work on my iMac. The eject key works, but if I try ALT+F2 I get nothing. I there something I need to reconfigure to get my keyboard full functioning?

View 1 Replies View RelatedProblem surfaced roughly 2 days ago (March 6th, 2010). When laptop lid is closed, and then opened, the screen remains black. Hard reboot is usually needed. Problem occurs when behavior setting is set to close laptop lid -> suspend, and also when setting is set to close laptop lid -> blank screen. I haven't tested under other settings.
Expected behavior: gnome login prompt appears. Please note that the expected behavior occurred consistently until a few days ago. Additional details:
Intel driver.
Fedora 12.
GNOME.
Thinkpad T60.
I'm trying to write a new keyboard layout. I'm testing using Debian Squeeze and Kubuntu 11.04, both with KDE. It is important to solve this issue with a keyboard layout as opposed to playing with xmodmap or scancodes and keycodes because I need to leave other keyboard layouts intact and usable. For the time being the new layout is called Noah, implemented as a variant of US English. If this is done more easily by making whole new layout that is not a variant of another then I am willing to go that route.
First off, I am trying to move the Caps Lock key to the current location of the "B" Key. This is my code (the unshown parts of the files have not been touched):

The problem is that this configuration is also affecting the US English layout. When I press "B" the keyboard gives a B _and_ a Caps Lock! So typing I get output like this: "keybOARD". How do I restrict the B key to being Caps Lock only in the Noah layout?

View 5 Replies View Relateddespite scorning the average Mac fanboy, I recently acquired a nice Apple USB Keyboard (aluminium model) which I admired for both design and quality. Unfortunately, Linux doesn't seem to like it very much - most importantly, the keyboard constantly keeps on changing keycodes and keymap, an issue I never had before. For instance, most of my bindings to close, maximize etc. lie on the "less" key (which is next to LShift on a German layout), but after every reboot, I have to reassign my bindings because either, it has traded places with "^" on a German layout (or "grave" on a US one), the key next to 1, or it has somehow changed its keycode and isn't recognized as "Less" any more, even though it kept its name.
Furthermore, most of the modifiers and similar keys like to throw a mixer dance, meaning that RAlt is suddenly Enter, Del is RCtrl, and so forth. All modifiers, the arrow keys, the block above them, all numpad non-numerical keys and Enter are involved. There seems to be no pattern or identifiable cause to this, except for when I start VirtualBox by VBoxSDL in fullscreen, it always does that (making me lose track of the Host Key, for instance). Also, after a while, the function keys seemed to be recognised - eject suddenly ejected my CDROM drive instead of executing its defined command, even though I never told it to. IIRC, no update to X preceeded this. As far as I can tell, all of these issues only appear in X, there is no problem on the command line. My system is a HP notebook (whose internal keyboard works a+) running a recently dist-upgraded Linux Sidux with kernel 2.6.32-1-slh.sidux and a fully upgraded X server with e17.

I have a late 2009 MacBook, white, unibody, and I wish for the F1-F12 function keys to have their primary role as F1-F12 keys, but allow me to use them as media/volume/brightness keys as a secondary role, when the "fn" key is held down at the same time as corresponding key.

Now the keyboard layout is all wrong, ie backspace key puts a 5 in rather than go back a space, enter key puts / and spacebar moves 2 spaces also numbers on the right are not correct despite number lock on as usual. What happened to the settings and how can reset keyboard settings.

I've restarted several times - no change. Any ideas as to what I can do?I did play with my drivers a bit in 10 to get the trackpad to behave a bit more smoothly - but that was a while ago, and I'm not sure exactly what I can do.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI don't know if this is a configuration issue or a hardware issue, but I have a Kinesis Advantage USB keyboard and for some reason the F3-F5 keys aren't responding as they used to. They don't respond to anything and, when I tried using F5 on Emacs, it said <XF86AudioNext> is undefined, so I guess it's a weird mapping problem.
Any idea how I could remap them to the original meaning?
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx 64bit on my mac pro in a dual boot setup with os x. When installing I had some trouble figuring out the partitions, especially because the thing happened with the extra partition from nowhere. I deleted the small partition created by the installer, synced the GPT and MBR, installed GRUB on /dev/sda4 and all was fine.
After my first software update my system is now broken, after rEFIt it got stuck on a black screen. I started up from the livecd, chrooted into my system, reinstalled GRUB on /dev/sda4, installed it on /dev/sda too, but that did not really help. I now get to the GRUB rescue shell, but I'm pretty clueless what to do. Also it does not seem a widespread problem, since I didn;t find many reports of dual-boot macintels breaking with this update. What can I do to restore my linux system ?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed a whole mess of updates yesterday, and when I booted into Ubuntu today, my desktop looked off. I could only use the upper 80% of my display, while Docky had decided to completely take over the bottom portion. Killing Docky brought my display back to full size. However, any scrolling or window movement was very jerky. I double checked my appearance preferences, only to find out that I had been 'downgraded' from 'normal' to 'none'. I attempted to go back to my original settings. First, I was told that the Appearance Manager was searching for available drivers. After flashing through all of my open windows, I was told 'Desktop effects could not be enabled'. A bit of searching discovered that people have had problems with compiz in the past. I downloaded compiz-check, and ran it, only to be shown the following:

So, something in my updates broke my graphics rendering. Unfortunately, I don't know how to force Ubuntu to tell me what was updated yesterday. If I could do so, is there a way to revert to the previous version, so I could run the updates one at a time until I figured out what went wrong?
I'm running Debian (Squeeze) and I have a toshiba portege m700. It has five buttons on the front just under the screen, which are the only ones accessible when you flip the screen over into tablet mode. One of them is for rotating the screen, and another is for switching to external display. I want to remap the remaining three to control, alt and super so that I can use shortcuts with the stylusThe problem is, when I used showkey to find out the key codes, I found out that each button generates more than one key code:Button 1:
key 126 press >> super_r, although this is distinct from the actual super key (125)

If I leave my Macbook Pro 7,1 updating and come back to it a while later and I press a button to turn the screen saver off, it just has has a black screen a cursor in the corner and nothing else. It hasn't automatically rebooted, I know, because I dual boot and it would've booted into OS X. When this happens I can usually press ctrl+alt+F2 or something and I get a command line prompting me to login but if I try and type nothing appears at the login prompt. The only way I can recover from this is to hold down the power button to turn it off.
