I am running Ferdora 12 (constantine) 64 with Intel Xeon 3.2GHz processor + 12GB Ram. I am running this machine specifically for number chunching applications but it isnt running as fast as i thought it would! Are there any tips to optimizing the speed of processors in fedora?
View 7 RepliesDoes any one have a way to speed up the internet on Fedora 12? I have a dual boot system with Vista x64 on the flip-side, and my wireless connection there is just fine. But when I get on this side, it goes back to the dial-up days (yes I said the DU word). yum updates seem to be just fine, and e-mail seems to be fine. just firefox is slow. And now that I put the x64 Flash in (thanks to leigh123linux), with that working too it seems even a little slower again.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using 9.10 on an 867mhz ti-book.Ubuntu is quicker than OSX and everything I care about works.However, the G4 processor can't auto-cycle up and down as later G4's could. It can operate at a reduced speed, though. Doing so greatly reduces the heat output and fan noise.Anyone know how to enable the slower processor speed in 9.10?

View 4 Replies View RelatedOn my 2 year old laptop I have an Intel Celeron Processor (The one made in June something of 2008) and last night I finally decided to tear it apart. My reasoning was, that I am going to buy a new laptop soon (I want a 64 bit system ) and lo and behold, my celeron processor has 2 cores on the chip itself. I ran several software tests on it in Linux (mostly just profiling and etc.) then I ran a full diagnostic on it and turns out that the second core was never used in any of it. So I looked over it through a magnifying glass and found a pin that was blocking a section from passing anything to this other core. I pulled the pin out and popped my processor in my laptop. Windows refused to boot at first except into Safe Mode because of a hardware change. It was there that my PC was re-evaluated and while previously I had a 3.5 out of 5.0 according to Vista, I know have a 4.1/5.0 thus Aero now was enabled. I then tried something crazy, I popped in the Arch64 net-install disk and VIOLA!!! It loaded and installed Arch64 successfully. Thus, I converted what was a 32 bit processor into a now 64 bit processor by (carefully) removing a pin. After doing research it seems other people found this out too and am wondering to myself, if Intel created this cheap of a 64bit processor, why didn't they market it like that and/or use this as their low-end 64 bit processor? It's all very fishy to me and I really don't know what to make of it.
As an update, I have re-soldered the pin on and Windows still sees the 2nd core. Arch64 however refuses to boot because it's trying to boot 64bit instructions on a 32bit processor again. It seems that since Windows saw that it was there, it has loaded a new driver (some weird "Intel Blah blah blah" [didn't write it down and don't feel like rebooting, sorry] ) that wasn't loaded before. It's still running Vista 32bit (NOT going to upgrade), but it still sees that the other core is there.

When I download the 64 Bit Version of kubuntu.org, the filename is named with "amd" at the end, but I need a version for intel bit64 (icore7).
I can't figure out why but my processor is running at 100% on all four cores, and the fan is running at max speed. All I did was double click an a.out file created by g++, and it is running at full speed now.

I have a dual boot on a netbook with windows and fedora13. When I am on my fedora boot and I try to watch streaming video it comes through in waves or not at all. I do not have the same problems on the alternate boot. There are other performance comparisons where the windows boot runs smoother and faster. Is there any work I can do in order to optimise my fedora boot in this capacity?
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy Sempron LE-1100 home server (1GB RAM) has run CentOS 5 32-bit happily for years, but I decided to replace its two Seagate 250GB drives (RAID1) with two WD 500GB black drives (RAID1). I decided to do a fresh install and used CentOS 5.5 64-bit this time. Since switching to the 64-bit OS with the new drives, my transfer speed across the LAN has dropped from a reliable 45MB/s to only 18MB/s from other machines to the server, and to 27MB/s from the server to other machines on the LAN. I use gFTP or WinSCP for these transfers (in FTP mode). Prior to installing the new WD drives, I ran the long WD tests on them and they passed, so I don't believe the drives are faulty. I suspect it's more to do with me switching CentOS from i386 to x86_64.
I've got two questions:
1. Is the 64-bit version of CentOS appropriate for a Sempron LE-1100 with 1GB ram, or should I switch back to the i386 version?
2. Is there a reason why switching to the 64-bit OS would negatively impact on transfer speeds? I doubt the new HDDs are faulty...I was expecting them to be faster.
3. Is there anything I can try to improve transfer speeds across the LAN?

Can anyone get the website below to work correctly with Firefox 3.5 and F11 64bit?[URL]...All I see is the background scrolling slowly and jerkily, none of the buttons at the bottom work. Reboot into Windows 7 and IE8: the same site is fast, smooth, the buttons work and the product details appear correctly in the centre of the screen.

Anyone successfully installed AIR and iPlayer on F11?
I've switched to 32 bit Adobe flash, tried Autoten for AIR and Dangermouse's advice for iPlayer: url.html but it's not working, and trying to install AIR from url results in an endless busy downloading graphic .
I assume my problem is a lack of required packages, though I searched the repositories using YUM extender for the packages listed here: url.html and can't see them either as installed or available.
I want to install IBM Lotus Symphony on my 64 bit system, but yum only finds 32 bit version.

Now the issue that i am facing is that my 32bit fedora system does not showing and suppoting more than 3.XX gigs of RAM when i consult "/proc/meminfo", "free -m" and "top". Now i have done two thing, first i have installed a PAE version of kernel. In result of this my system become two slow with the following error at startup. Error: starting udev: wait timeout. will continue in the background <Failed> Secondly, i installed a 64bit version of Fedora 10 but still it showing not more than 3GB of memory. I'd like to get the most of my Ubuntu, a good sound (what player can I use ?) and to know wether I need to do some extra changes in the kernel (OSS / PulseAudio / ALSA ?) or not.
I wonder if my converter will be detected when i plug it in, and if any sound from my computer will be leaded to it automatically ? (I'll have the converter tomorrow). I believe its purpose is to replace the sound card, to provide a greater, pure sound. The converter is linked by USB by the way.
I have a friend who is using Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition on their netbook and well they love it. However, I notice that at times (if not all the time) their internet is ridiculously slow. Yes, it's a 1 Mbps download connection, but I still think it's a little slow and at times I can't even get it to load a website. I'm thinking if I adjusted the MTU within Ubuntu, it might improve, if even only slightly. I believe the router is set to 1490 or 1500, I haven't really looked yet.

The script works fine, but it seems to be very inefficient. I'm just wondering how I can optimize it.

Again, it seems to work fine, but the script greps through /var/log/maillog three times -- first to find the sender; second to see if it's also going to the desired recipient; finally to view all instances of the message ID in the logs. This seems redundant and inefficient.
