I don't really understand the CPU technology where there are different CPU speeds. I feel it is hard to compare them nowadays. For example, I have been using my laptop with Pentium (R) 2Ghz. Now, I am thinking about buying a new laptop with Intel I5 1.33GHz (Tablet/laptop). Is my new laptop going to be slower than my current one?
View 12 RepliesSince I use my computer for some intense processor calculations, without any fancy graphical needs, I decided to apply a mild OC on the BIOS settings, to speed thing a bit up.I own an AMD Phenom II 1055T (2.8GHz) cpu. I changed the base freq from 200 to 203, and changed the multipliers of the standard and boost freqs to x15 and x16.5, so now the BIOS reads 3045 MHz and 3349 MHz for both speeds.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe dvd rom drive is quite noisy if used at full speed, but it can be reduced at the cost of speed, which, depending on what you're doing, does not make much difference (like listening to music or watching a movie). Adittionaly, it may (that's just a reasonable guess) extend its lifetime. It can be manually reduced with the following command:
eject -x N /dev/cdrom (which won't actually eject it) Where N is the number of the speed you want. I've read that 4 is OK for music and 12 is OK for movies. (Reference: Setting CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drive speed to reduce noise ) Everything is fine, but is it possible to have lower speed set by default on fstab or something, or the fastest speed is always the default?
For some reason on these days i've noticed that my internet speed seems to go faster when i'm on my windows partition (shame on me i know xD) when i go back to my linux pages take too much time to load, which doesn't happen in windows, i have never had this problem before/
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm using 9.10 on an 867mhz ti-book.Ubuntu is quicker than OSX and everything I care about works.However, the G4 processor can't auto-cycle up and down as later G4's could. It can operate at a reduced speed, though. Doing so greatly reduces the heat output and fan noise.Anyone know how to enable the slower processor speed in 9.10?

It used to have a lightening speed. But now every application is taking few seconds to start, even on Konsole, the commands take some seconds to get typed ! (I literally have to wait for cursor to move and commands to get typed on Konsole). Folders are taking some seconds to get opened !
I rebooted the computer but that proved to be useless.

Im experiencing a strange problem with 10.04. When it first boots up its reasonably quick (as snappy as Gnome ever has been) but after its been running for a day or two it gets ununsably slow and has to be rebooted.
I dont see how it can be anything to do with my hardware as it runs OK when first started. Ive monitored RAM usage and it doesnt seem to differ much. There's always the same amount unused.
I have a linksys networkrouter WiFi a laptop Windows Vista an a Laptop Ubuntu.On the vista machine i have 54mb/s on the ubuntu i have sometimes 1 and sometimes 25 mb/s When it was a Windows machine it was also 54mb/s.So y question what can i doo to speed it up ?

I'm trying to control the fan speed on my laptop (IBM Thinkpad T43.) I used lsmod and saw that the thinkpad_acpi module was already load, but I know I need the fan_control=1 option so I did this:
$modprobe thinkpad_acpi fan_control=1.
Then I did: $echo level 7 > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan
and I get an error: write error: Invalid argument
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here, Also, if I wanted to load the module thinkpad_acpi at boot time with the fan_control=1 option, should I add it to /etc/rc.modules? In other words, does the rc.modules file override udev? And do I need to remove the module before reloading it with the fan_control=1 option?
I really need some control over my fan speed, as it seems by laptop is running rather hot.
how to control the speed of the fan in my laptop ? i use ubuntu ...i don't seem to use it to full power and it is always cool .. it makes lots of noise.i don't know what to say for commands i've run . i tried lm-sensors but it says command not found. sensors gives me some output and "temp1" which say +69degrees maximum 89 ..i used the search function but it just gave me some unsolved threads.

Banshee & Rhythmbox try to play music files at double, or more, speed with no sound output. Spotify Linux version also tries to playback at double speed with no sound output. Media Player attempts to play music files at high speed. Media player plays the Video and audio tracks at high speed. VLC Will play the video at normal speed but with no audio.

That is, can the DDR2 800 be fully utilized on this system? What are pros and cons of such? Does the added benefit outweigh the additional cost of the RAM?
Note: I'm not looking to overclock at all, and this is not going to be used for 3D apps (games or video editing).
i both have the same problem, i'm trying to burn my images at 4 or 8 speed, but ubuntu 10.04 says that the hardware does not support that kind of speed and switch up to 16 speed and more. i know it can burn at low speeds, at least in windows, it is a bit strange that fast burning is okee, and slow not, what can i do to prevent this? i don't wanna burn to much errors on my discs

I cannot get this one IF statement to work, it seems the comparison operator does not think the resulting number from the $b*$c+$b operation is an integer even though it is a number. I know it is wrong to use the "==" operator to compare the equality of two floating point numbers. Logically it would seem that if the "==" operator is not usable for floating point comparison, then the "<=" operator would also not be usable. Is this true? The lack of google search results on this topic made me think that it must be true. I have 2 binary files, i just want to compare the differences easily and graphically, in windows HexWorkshop did this with the click of a button. I have tried 5-6 editors from the ubuntu repos but none have this option

I have tried recordMyDesktop, XVidCap and a few others. However, they capture XServer and therefore things like desktop effects arent recorded. I have used VLCs screen capture which to be honest is better than the other 2 software i mentioned for recording the whole screen, but options are very limited.
my issue is that the when i put in the correct input its going into the loop like i put in incorrect input and wont break out of the loop even with the correct input entered

I have a bash script that is tracking ERROR connections (running in a cron every 15 minutes), sometimes the errors are true and are not connecting. But most of the time, the disconnects/reconnects are between 30 seconds are sending out false positives. I am looking for a time comparison code to pick out the 30 second disconnects and know that this is and "ok" error. Here is a section of the log with timestamps, errors, etc.

I am fairly new to linux still and I'm currently trying to write a shell script (which I have never done) that is supposed to run the xrestop(like top) program. What I want to do is execute the program and check the identifier column to see if a certain program is running. If it is running I want to strip the data from that row of the terminal say every 5 seconds or so and put it in a text file. Is this going to be a complicated thing?
