Ubuntu :: Accessing Local Filesystem Kills Program

Sep 16, 2010

I searched online, but I was unable to find anything on this. I recently tried to install a program, but it did not work. After that, anytime I would open a folder that is located on the local computer, it would close out of Nautilus. I thought that was the extent of the problem, but I just discovered that if I click "Open" on any program, it closes that program out. I was able to plug in a jumpdrive and browse the files on it, but as soon as I clicked on a folder that was local, it would kill the program. I am using 8.10, by the way.

Fedora :: Accessing Newly Formatted Disk (JFS Filesystem)

I have just formatted an external USB disk with a JFS filesystem. The partition shows up in 'Computer', and it mounts, but if I try and copy and files onto it, it will not do it. Clearly, Nautilus is mounting it read-only. How do I get this to behave like my USB Flash drive, where I plug it in, and its automatically mounted read/write?

Ubuntu :: Multi Users Accessing A Remote Server On Local Network

Jul 24, 2010

I would like to experiment a "green" idea of virtual desktop where multiple users are served by a single powerful machine.

I have a server running 24/7. The monitor of this machine is turned off most of the time and the OS is on the login screen.

Other users, in the same local network, use less powerful machines, which could be a thin client or an old Pentium 3 machine. They access their accounts remotely and work with the GUI as if they were sitting in front of the server. Each user sees their own desktop (different themes, screen resolution, etc.). And of course it can happen that several users could log in at the same time.

The usage is modest: mostly web browsing and the usual default applications (office, wine, gimp, etc.). In particular no games or any demanding applications. The users want to use their desktop in graphical mode only.

Question: How do we call this way of using a server? Is it possible with Ubuntu? And how to implement it?

Programming :: CSH Permission Denied When Accessing Local File

Mar 9, 2011

I've just recently started learning shell scripting and I've been working on a basic csh script, but I've been having a few problems. Here's the script

Code:
#!/bin/csh
echo Enter a file name
$< = FILE ##Name of file
echo enter a size (in kilobytes) to monitor
SIZETOMON = $< ##Size value that's input by user
du -k $FILE = $SIZE ##Size of the file that the user wishes to monitor
while (1)
if $SIZE > $SIZETOMON then
echo ALERT: File size is greater than $SIZETOMON
end

And here's the output
Code:
/home/lucer/foo.txt: Permission denied.
Badly placed ()'s.

I'm not really sure what the issue is with the "badly placed ()'s" or why it won't let me access files that I can access with the same shell when it's not in a script.

Ubuntu :: Restrict A Certain Program From Accessing Certain Files

Everytime I start Rhythmbox it starts to scan my USB HardDrive (which contains 50,000+ files) for media. I searched around, and it seems that there is nothing one can do stop that using any Rhythmbox options, switches, etc. Is there a way to prevent a process (in this case Rhythmbox)from using a certain resource (the path to my USB Drive)? I'm thinking APPArmor or SELinux may be the way to do it.

Ubuntu :: Accessing Parallel Ports From Perl Program

Dec 11, 2010

I am trying to write to the parallel port pins from a Perl program running Ubuntu Linux, to light up led's on a bread board. I've already accomplished this on this same box using a C program, but I cannot get my code below to work. I believe the problem is with the line:
$parport = Device::ParallelPort->new('auto:0');
I've tried different variables between the ('') ticks, but nothing has worked. I use Perl on my web pages for forms, but this has stumped me.

Code is below:
#!/usr/bin/perl require "subparseform.lib"; &Parse_Form; print "Set-cookie:
cart_id=1234; user_id=123;
"; print "Content-type: text/html
"; use strict; use CGI; use Device::ParallelPort;
# use Device::ParallelPort::drv; # use Device::ParallelPort::drv::linux # use Device::ParallelPort::drv::parport
# Set up your parallel port object and tell it what driver to use.
#my $parport = Device::ParallelPort->new('auto:0'); print "It works!!!";

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Refuse Accessing Parent Directory In FTP Client Program

I am runnung ubuntu 9.10 desktop edition as a server. I am using a FTP client program to upload some files(index.html, background.png, etc) and everything is fine with that. And currently all my files are in /home/myname/ folder. What I want is whenever I log in with my ubuntu account in the FTP client program, I can actually see the list or contents of the very root directory.

In other word, I can see every folder like /bin, /boot, /etc, /root, so on in the FTP software and I can download it. I don't want to allow to access the parent(or root) directory. Is there any possible way to set up the sutff?

Ubuntu :: OpenMotif : Create Network Location Link As Local Filesystem Location?

Apr 26, 2011

I'm working with a program that uses Open Motif to create all of the widgets, including the Open File dialog box (obviously). However, Open Motif being kinda old-timey, 80's vintage, and for the most part now an abandoned project, it is quite clunky. So, actually what I need to do is to open some files located on my work server. I have already successfully connected to the relevant server directories with Samba, and with programs built with GTK+ (such as GIMP) I can open files across the network because I have created a bookmark in Nautilus, and those bookmarks appear in the Open File dialog box created by GTK+. Now, Open Motif is different: it doesn't see network locations, orNautilus shortcuts. When I type "smb://serveripyadayada" in the search folder, it really doesn't like it and complains. So, what do I do? Can I get somehow Open Motif to open a network location? Or can I do a run-around and place a shortcut in the file system that points to the network location?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Filesystem Check After Power Outage - WARNING: "Running E2fsck On A Mounted Filesystem May Cause SEVERE Filesystem Damage"

May 18, 2011

I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:

*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..

*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message

*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)

Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.

Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?

Ubuntu :: Finding Filesystem Type/repair Broken Filesystem?

Jul 9, 2010

I have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.

First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.

Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.

General :: External Drive Read Only - WARNING! Running E2fsck On A Mounted Filesystem May Cause SEVERE Filesystem Damage

Mar 24, 2010

I've had a look at some similar threads but as I'm very new to linux they're already a bit technical for me. Sorry, this calls for someone with patience. I gather from other threads that disconnecting an external drive without unmounting is a no-no, and this seems to be the likely cause. Now the disk is read only and I'm unable to change any settings through the usual control panel on ubuntu. I'm just not familiar with the terminal instructions. I tried to cut and past a few command lines from other threads but I got some warnings that proceding could damage data. Like this one: WARNING! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage.

Ubuntu :: Logging Out And Back In Kills Compiz

However, if I've got Compiz activated when I log out, I find myself with no titlebar or frames whenever I log back in. Thankfully, this is easily corrected by opening the Fusion Icon and going back to Xfwm and then going back to Compiz, where I have the titlebar and frames and eye-popping effects and the whole nine yards. But it'd be a lot nicer to not have to deal with having to correct that every time I log in in the first place.

Ubuntu :: Installing Nvidia Drivers Kills?

Jun 19, 2011

Three times so far I have had to re-install ubuntu because I installed an updated or new Nvidia graphics driver for my GeForce FX 5200 The first time, using Natty Narwhal, I installed an updated graphics driver, and upon reboot, I was presented with a blank screen that did nothing. Being a first-time Ubuntu user, I assumed it was me, or a bug in the new release. So I burnt a Lucid Lynx cd on another pc, and installed that instead. Same problem when I installed a new graphics driver, again via Admin>>Hardware Drivers. Reboot yielded a blank screen. Booted from cd again, as I had no files yet to worry about, and everything seemed to be fine, providing I stayed away from that tempting hardware drivers button.

I then accidentally installed a new driver when installing the dependencies(via terminal) for OGRE (Object-Oriented Graphics Rendering Engine) This time, my terminal froze, Firefox wouldn't boot, and a reboot yielded a blinking, blank login screen that did not do anything. Obviously, I'd like to have a graphics driver, as currently I can't run anything that needs 3d acceleration (Games, 3d simulations, even Desktop effects), but it's not absolutely necessary. So if nobody can suggest a fix, short of a new computer, new graphics card etc, can anybody suggest a way that I can stop myself accidentally installing anything driver-ish? The driver worked fine on windowsXP, but there's two reasons I'm not going back to that: a) I hate it. Hate, hate, hate.b) I've lost the activation key that came with computer, so I can't reinstall.

Further detail can be provided on request. Computer is Dell Dimension 2400, 256Mb RAM, Hard drive is almost empty. Old and slow, but I like it.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Update Kills ATi Drivers

Soon after all of this, I decided to run an update. Now, while my drivers are listed as installed in synaptic, nothing is recognized, not even the command "aticonfig" when typed in the terminal. When I try to access the Catalyst Control Center, it tells me that either I have no video drivers, or there's a problem with my card.Is there anything I can do about this? I've already tried reinstalling the drivers from synaptic.

Ubuntu :: Update Kills Keyboard And Mouse

Dec 28, 2010

I had applied all the updates available on 23rd Morning and Keyboard and mouse stopped working thereafter. The updates amounted to around 130 MBs in size. I can use the keyboard to select other items in Grub menu and it works upto the login prompt. I can change the console to Ctrl+Alt+F1 to F6 before the login screen. No response thereafter. I have set the autoloin after 10 Seconds and the notification asks me for enabling compositing.

When booted in recovery mode, the screen remains blank without the options like Repair Packages, Root shell, Resume etc.BTW, Ctrl+Alt+Del reboots the blank screen.What to do now? I thought that Reovery mode boot will give me the menu of these above items.The keyboard and mouse freeze just at login screen. So is it related to .gconfd or Gnome? Or can I unistall all the updates I had installed on 23rd December?At least how can I have the list of installed applications and my customisations in case of a reinstallation?Should I renstall and start all over again without any clue what I had done earlier?

Ubuntu :: Broken Prtscn Button Kills?

Jun 22, 2010

I'm keen to install Ubuntu on my old laptop (HP ze4500 2.4GHz 1Gb Ram 120GbHDD) But during installation (I presume as soon as the screen capture function becomes available) A zillion screen capture screens appear and lock up the system. It may be due to my prtscn button being missing. Actually its just the plastic part and the rubber button mechanism is still present. The button works without the plastic part completely fine in windows. That is to say I can press it when I want to use it and it works and it does nothing noticable otherwise.

Seems like a pretty trivial way to kill ubuntu, perhaps there's a trivial way to solve this problem on my laptop without replacing it? I do get through to the desktop sometimes if i carefully dont touch the keyboard and shutdown the screencapture panels as they appear. It doesnt seem to matter which method i use to get into the desktop though livecd/install alongside windows/fresh install.
