Ubuntu :: ATI Catalyst Support Eyefinity Triple Head In 10.04

Jul 19, 2010

I have been trying to figure out if Eyefinity will work in Ubuntu 10.04 for three monitors. I can test this at work where we have three monitor, one with a display port connection. I just want to know if it is worth trying, and if so what catalyst drive might work.

So I have done a lot of searching and have found a number of yes and no answers.

To start with Lanchpad has a change log saying it should work.

[url]

This guy says it work once did but does not now.

[url]

Then someone tries and fails with Catalyst 10.6. Seem like a lot of other good info here.

[url]

Then to finish it up these guys have some rumors that seem to say Catalyst 10.7 will support this.

[url]

I think I will wait for Catalyst 10.7 and then give it a try.

General :: TV Out/triple Head With Nvidia 9500GT On Ubuntu 10.04 X64 ?

Jul 11, 2011

I'm trying to get rid of my dedicated media center and connect my desktop to my TV instead. No matter what I change I get no picture at all on the TV when connected to the desktop. I already have two LCD monitors using nvidia's "TwinView" mode and I want the TV to just be an extension of this, at a lower resolution.

My system information is below, but note that anything in the tag " ### NEW {}" in the xorg.conf is my attempt at getting this to work, the rest was already there. Two LCD monitors are screens 0 and 1, the TV is screen 2.

Hardware :: Card Recommendation For Triple Head?

Oct 21, 2010

I have a GeForce 8400 GS card and I run two monitors. I use Xinerama (don't recall now why but I think XrandR didn't work for me) and nvidia. I would like three monitors now and I see here[URL].... My onboard video is disabled by the mobo if I use a video card [URL]... so it seems I need a new video card.

Should I get another GeForce 8400 GS for $40 from Amazon? I suppose the only other idea would be to get a 3-head card but those seem a lot more expensive.

Fedora :: F15 Kernel 2.6.38.8-35 Prevents Triple-head With Radeon Driver?

Jul 28, 2011

Yesterday I updated my F15 x86_64 system from kernel 2.6.38.6-27 to 2.6.38.8-35. After the reboot, my triple-head system complained of not having enough CRTCs and only 2 screens worked. Other components were also updated, including some X11 components, however selecting a fallback kernel at the grub prompt indicates this follows the kernel (fall back to old kernel has all 3 monitors working). xrandr --verbose on the 2.6.38.6-27 kernel shows each of the 3 monitors assigned to separate CRTC entries, with CRTCs 0 thru 5 available.

Same command on the new 2.6.38.8-35 system only shows CRTCs 0 & 1 available. My system using an XFX Radeon HD5450 card, with 3 interfaces: HDMI, DVI, VGA. The default Fedora open source "radeon" driver allows all 3 interfaces to be usable. However, with the new kernel, the loss of several CRTCs prevents the 3rd monitor from working.What are the thoughts from the community? I've searched various forums here and haven't seen similar symptoms reported. I'm looking for any direction/experience/thingsToTry from others before trying to open a bug report. (Attempts to use the Catalyst driver several months ago resulted in only 2 of the 3 connected monitors working.

Hardware :: Can't Configure Stable Xorg.conf For Triple Head

Aug 25, 2010

I currently have 2 GPUs in my system both ATI. The primary is a HD4870 and the secondary is a HD4350.

I have a 24" and a 17" running in twin view from the 4870 but I can't figure out a way to enable my third monitor to display anything at all, I have tried multiple configurations but I end up breaking the xorg every time.

All I simply want to do is keep my twinview on the monitors run by the 4870 but have the third monitor as a separate X session so I can still use compiz. Here is my xorg file, it was generated by aticonfig.

Or does it depend on the WM? If so, is it possible have one big workspace with awesome WM for example?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Get Head Around Hd(0,0) And Sda1 Conversion?

Mar 16, 2010

I'm setting up my menu.lst for GRUB Legacy (downgraded from GRUB2 in 9.10) and I'm just having difficulty getting my head around converting the /dev/sda1, sda2 etc to hd(0,0), (0,1).

My partitions are as follows:

sda1 = Windows XP (ntfs primary partition)
sda2 = Windows Vista (ntfs primary partition)
sda3 = Linux boot (small ext2 primary partition)
sda4 = extended partition
sda5 = Windows XP second different installation (ntfs logical partition)
sda6 = Ubuntu 9.10 root (ext3 logical partition)
sda7 = linux-swap (swap logical partition)

As I said, I am trying to set these up in GRUB, but cannot work out what all the hd(0,x) equivalents are. I *thought* it was just a case of subtracting 1 from the sdax number, but it doesn't appear to be that way.

I am trying out conky for the first time and rather enjoying it. I have a small frustration though. I have a dual head setup and would like to have identical conky's showing on both monitors. I have tried creating two .conkyrc's (.conkyrc1 & .conkyrc2) and then using:-

Code:

$ conky -c config2
to launch them, this results in only one of the two conky's displaying. I did at first think that maybe they were on top of eachother, but one conkyrc is set bottom_left, the other bottom_right so they should not be right??

I'm aware that there are issues with rebooting the device, possibly as a result of the wireless drivers. That doesn't bother me. Dual-head is a requirement I intend installing 9.10 and dual booting macos for firmware updates.

Ubuntu Networking :: VNC And Dual Head Setup (separate X Screens)?

Jan 2, 2011

I have my computer set up to use separate x screens for both of my monitors and almost everything works perfectly. With this set up I don't have any problem displaying flash in full screen on either monitor like I had with twinview. I have it set up this way so that I can use my TV to display mythtv and still use my computer monitor to browse the web, etc. The only problem is that I use my iphone with hipporemote to give me a wireless keyboard/mouse. When using twinview this was not a problem as it was just one large desktop spread over two monitors.

However, switching to separate x screens seems to have broken the functionality of the vnc server. When using my physical keyboard and mouse I can just move the cursor off the side of monitor 1 to control monitor 2, however, if I'm connected via vnc the cursor gets "trapped" inside the active monitor. I can interact with each screen as expected but if I want to switch the mouse/keyboard focus to the other monitor I have to go to the computer and move the mouse to the desired monitor, which obviously defeats the purpose of using the iphone as a wireless remote.

So my question is this. Is there a way to assign a hotkey combination to switch the focus of keyboard and mouse that the vnc server is controlling? Or could I set the vnc server to only control one of the two x screens?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Head Set Microphone - Where's The Auto Gain Control

May 2, 2011

The mic works, and the sound is crystal clear (after enabling mic boost in alsamixer, and lowering the input volume down closer to "unamplified" in Sound Preferences), but when I use word's like "let's" or "lisa" (basically anything higher pitched), I get horrible distortion.

Lowering the input gain further seems to work, but then all the "normal" words sound too weak.

I read a description of what Automatic Gain Control generally does, and it seems like something that was designed specifically to solve this problem, but I can't find an option to enable something like that in Ubuntu.

... I'm assuming the option exists, or that there is maybe some other trick to normalizing the mic volume (other than post-processing with audacity)?

OpenSUSE Install :: X.org Dual-head Under 11.3 With Radeon?

Jul 16, 2010

I've just performed a fresh installation of openSUSE 11.3. System specs include GA-MA790X-DS4, PhenomII X4 940 AM2+, Sapphire RadeonHD 3670, two monitors. What I'm trying to accomplish is to set up my KDE desktop to (as it did under 11.2) use a multi-desktop multi-output non-cloned setup, so that I can use my two monitors side by side and maximize windows in either one respectively, etc.

So here I am with my newly installed system. Obviously I can't use fglrx, as it doesn't yet support the 2.6.34 kernel, so amdcccle is right out. SaX2, I notice, is gone. I have tried using KDE's built-in configuration tools, but the dual-head setup doesn't persist between logins. Strangely, windows that were open on the second monitor do vanish off-screen, but the monitors return to their overlapped positions so it's useless. Monitor 2 doesn't even retain its resolution setting. As one does, I decided I'd manually edit the X configuration file. SHOCK HORROR! No xorg.conf So what I'm driving at is this: How oh how do I configure my X.org to remember that it has two, quite different, monitors under openSUSE 11.3 ? Sorry if this post is hard to follow, I got very little sleep while trying to sort out the myriad problems I caused myself in upgrading.

Hardware :: Dual Head Graphics Cards

Jun 14, 2011

I'm building another desktop. This is not a gaming system (though some video does cross my path), it's primary focus is as an application development platform. The thing is based on a SuperMicro two CPU motherboard with a couple intel multi-cores, 16GB RAM, a hardware RAID, and CentOS 5.6 (64bit). To this mix I would like to add a solid dual-head graphics card. Something that will support a couple HP LP2465 monitors (not new but functioning well). Speed of rendering is not my biggest concern, stability and "real estate" (the monitors are 1920x1200 and I want all of it).

I've looked a little at the Matrox items and started researching nVidia, but would like to hear opinions from those "in the know".The motherboard, though a solid performer, may have just made this trip unnecessary. It has a quirk that I hadn't considered before. It has several PCI-X slots (64-bit @ 133MHz) but only one "PCI-Express 1 (x8) on a (x16) slot". Does that seem a little strange to anyone else? Not that there is just one PCI-E but that it will fit a x16 board but will only support x8 connections...

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Xcalib Only Inverts Primary Screen Of Dual Head?

I rely on xcalib from Stefan Doehla to invert my screen gamma ramps, ie turn them to white text on black backgrounds. This worked perfectly, just using

xcalib -i -alter

but now, xcalib only inverts the netbook screen. The second screen remains stubbornly unaffected.

Since xcalib has not changed, and it works on one screen, maybe something changed between Karmic and Lucid.
