I would like to stream my HD Movie collection over a wireless network to my PS3 and/or Xbox 360.
All my movie files are MP4s and I wondering if it is possible to do this. If possible, I'd like to use the VLC player to do this but its not too important. I really really really do not want to sacrifice any video or sound quality while streaming.

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 with XBMC and am trying to use it to stream media to my XBOX 360. I can connect to it but it shows "No videos found" (same for music and pictures).
I can watch videos/listen to music/view pictures on my desktop so I am fairly sure the library is set up properly. I have samba set up and can view my shared media on my other desktop (running windows XP). I also tried using ushare, which worked but would not play very well.
I have tried all the setting in System-->Network, all to no avail.

I have ushare server connected to my 360 and its working fine, I can see my videos and watch them perfectly, but my music or mp3's arent displaying on the 360 properly at all.
In the video library it displays all the sub folders with the videos in them first and then the video files that arent in a folder, thats normal for me. But the music libray is only showing 1000 files and half of it is the album art jpg files etc. I have well over 30,000 mp3's and 98% of them are organised into folders etc.
Why its sharing my files in this way?

So in trying to install ushare to be able to play my music and videos on my xbox 360, I have apparently screwed something up and now I can't get ushare to work. I can't even get it uninstall and do a fresh install. I used the instructions found here: [URL]. I got down to the basic configuration tool. I entered the name of the media server, which I called Ubuntu_Media_Server. Then I identified my network interface, which was my wireless connection (wlan0). Then I told it what directory to share, which was /home/ryan/music and hit enter.
It did exactly what it was supposed to do which was to restart ushare. And then, oops, I forgot, I wanted to be able to see my videos as well as my music, so I went back and ran the same command that I had to start the configuration tool which was $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure ushare and voila, I went back and added in the directory for the video folder that I wanted to share and hit enter. Again, it restarted as expected then it said permission was denied to the video folder. So I went to the video folder and gave permission for it to be shared. So then in all my illustrious wisdom (which apparently equates to dumbass), I decided to completely uninstall ushare and do a fresh install. Then it wouldn't reinstall, same problem permission denied for the video file.

I am trying to stream my music and videos to my xbox 360 from ubuntu 10.10, and I have set up ushare to do that. Ushare seems to be workign correctly, it starts up and the xbox recognises the share from the media menu, but there is no videos or music! For some reason ushare doesnt find any media in the folders I specified, and I double checked and the paths look correct to me. This is the error I get in the terminal:

I have a free account with Ubuntu One account and I was thinking about getting the music streaming service. I was curious though, what do people think of their Ubuntu One music streaming. I'm having a hard time finding reviews and I've considered a couple other options including Audiogalaxy which streams my entire music collection on Ubuntu through wine (and I've heard works very well). It also has an iOS and Android app as well as web streaming. So as I see it the things Audiogalaxy is limited by are: you need to have your computer on all the time (whenever/wherever you want to stream) and it's on your local drive VS being safely stored in the Ubuntu One server.
I haven't tried setting up Audiogalaxy on my Ubuntu box yet. I'm still trying to decide. The other question is what about services like Amazon player and google music? Ubuntu One seems to be the most expensive.

1-When entering a music CD, video or files, any programs or music or video players and desktop are closed are removed all the icons and I can not open any program only on firefox, I can not see the files or anything . (NOTE CD-rom is in mint condition)
2-I graphics effects ruin the entire desktop and when it is in fact no graphic still looks bad everything looks pixelated or striped like when flex is damaged or something is damaged and is in perfect condition.
Now I'm going with the version 10.04 of ubuntu:
1-I have the same problem with the CD I had in 9.10, except that in the 10/04 I can open some programs with the Emphaty and monitor systems.
2-When you close the laptop when I open the screen looks as if the flex embers damaged or broken screen (when it is of course) and I have no other to reset it.
3-When you drive about 30 minutes using computed with any open programs (Firefox, Emphaty, emesene, movie player, Gnome player) to close it or minimize it gets super slow and sometimes if I Friza and then to turn it off and repeat history.
4-When I'm watching a movie or a video with movie player is super slow (just what I'm playing does not the OS) as if Lageado and stuff. But with Gnome looks pretty good player just the video looks very small and I can not put it full screen. Certainly in a Dell Latitude C610 Pentium III-Processor: 1000/700mhz-Memory: 512MB Graphics-Card: 16mb.

I gotta say I know nothing about linux and how it works. I've always been a PC guy(I know, shame, shame). Anyway, I wanted to make my own media server, and for the most part, I seem to of succeed so far. I've learned a ton, but at the same time I'm so lost, and have more questions then answers, and hopefully I'll get some here.
Anyway, the conundrum that I've got is this. I've got my Server set up with Ubuntu 10.10(I think). Got a SAMBA filing system. And then I got Squeezebox to run music off my server. As I dont have an actual Squeezebox I needed to install SoftSqueeze to run the music from the Squeezebox Server address. I then found out that it works fine, but SoftSqueeze sucks when it comes to User Interface. I've tried looking around at other media players and forums about streaming and stuff, but its got me all confused, as I am new to this(going on 2 days now ).
My goal is to be able to stream music to all the users in the household, from the server to there PC. But to do this I'm very lost. I think that I can use a different media player to connect to my servers Squeezebox address... or do I need to get rid of Squeezebox entirely?

whenever I stream music to my Xbox 360, no matter what I use to stream it, it will stop halfway through and only start up again when the next songs begins to play. So far I've tested this on Twonky Media Server, uShare, and PS3 Media Server and all produce the same results. I'm running 9.10 and uShare at the moment.

Have any of the main music streaming sites (ex. Pandora, Rhapsody, Grooveshark, etc.) made it possible to stream audio without using flash, (other than via iPhone apps)? Have any of them made any strides with regard to implementing html5 functionality?
I know html5 will make more options available for streaming audio over the web, but I have not seen or used html5 for anything yet. The only method that I know of for streaming audio without flash, although I haven't tried it, is via html5 video on ...... This is certainly a suboptimal method for streaming music since the audio quality cannot be guaranteed and is likely mediocre. Nonetheless, I've heard that it works. Also, as a second unrelated question, are there any open source flash players that you guys have used to stream audio from these music sites? I tried a group of different players like Gnash about 6 months ago and failed to stream Pandora or Grooveshark.

I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this, so feel free to move it around (mods) I have a Nokia 2700, the full specs of which are available here - [URL].. And it looks somewhat like this >
So the idea here is, I have connected it up in every possible way to my laptop through bluetooth. I have found a way to stream music playing on the phone through my laptop speakers. What I want to be able to do is to be able to stream music playing on my laptop (all sounds through the soundcard) via bluetooth (perhaps?) from my mobile phone speakers..

I were to download a demo from [URL] would it save the demo to my laptop and then I could transfer it to my Xbox via Ethernet cable, even though my laptop has Ubuntu on it or does it have to be Windows computer?
I ask, b/c either way it is just a file on my laptop, regardless of the OS.
So, what does the community think?

At the moment I use Rhythmbox to acces my music and my iPod 5G. I would however like to use Banshee, but in Banshee all my iPod 5G-music is displayed under the video folder, while the music folder is empty. Any idea why?And also I have several albums with different artists on them, which gets spread out on i.e. 10 single albums even though they belong to the same album. This happens - as far as I can tell - after I've accessed the iPod from Rhythmbox (which is part of the reason why I wanna use Banshee).

I have a ubuntu desktop running 9.04 and a Acer Netbook running UNR 9.04.
Using NFS I have shared my videos from the desktop and have it automounted at start up on the netbook. I can navigate to the files but once I click play, the netbook locks up.
Is this a limitation on my hardware or is there a better way to "stream" these vids?

I don't know why, but I can't seem to just play video files (stream them) directly through the internet using MPC or any other media player. It is a bit weird, because I think I was able to just a month ago. I have made some changes to the general setup of the apache server, but nothing major, and I have no chance of reversing it all.
Instead, when I try opening the url using "Open file" it doesn't just open it an begin playing from the internet, but instead appears to be frozen. However, If I let it be "frozen" long enough, it will eventually play the file, indicating that it has downloaded the entire file to a temp location on the hard drive.
Is it something with the permissions? Actually, I went and made everything in /var/www/ 777, as it is not known by a domain name or registered anywhere. I am just connecting though my IP address as the server is located locally. Even this didn't help.

My local priest has asked me if I can use my computer skills to stream church services live for people who can't make it to church.I said, sure thing! I thought it would be simple, but the deeper I look into it, the more lost I have become! Here's the tech requirements:
- A camera with good optical zoom and focused on the altar (the camera will be stationed at an unobtrusive point at the back of the church on the choir balcony)
- Everything must be wireless (power is available on choir balcony to power the camera).
- Sound should be synchronised perfectly with the video (have access to the church PA system - located behind altar)
- the internet connection should be able to upload the stream to a virtual server (i.e. with root access) that's accessible to the web with ease. What upload speed would I need? Would 256k be enough? HD video is not required - ..... quality would be great. We can upgrade to HD at a later point in time!
- What bandwidth requirement would my server need if say 1000 users were connected? Seeing as they would most likely be locals, would just one stream be sent to the local exchange and that exchange would send out the stream to the 1,000 users, or would each user have to have a dedicated connection to the server?
- Say I bought a camcorder with HDMI output, what kind of processing power would I need to convert this to compressed video? (I've got an old Pentium 4 and an AMD64 2.0GHz lying idle in my bedroom and it would be great to make use of 'em instead of chucking 'em on the skip)
- I'd like all this to be done so that HTML5 browsers can access the video, resorting to flash if necessary
- I'd also like to be able to power down all the hardware with ease: i.e. set a timer. I'm sure ubuntu can do this with ease? What about configuring the camera to zoom in every time it is powered on? Can linux control the zoom on a camcorder?
- Am I totally nuts?

I've got a NAS mounted on a linux machine, and here at another location, I have my Ubuntu laptop. I'm able to remotely, securely mount the directory my NAS is mounted on in the linux machine onto my laptop via sshfs, giving me remote access to my NAS via my laptop. The problem I'm having is.. even though I have a high downstream at the laptop end, and a hefty 1mb upstream at my home, I still can't quite stream the movies I have stored on it. I can stream them, but there is a lot of stuttering.I've tried messing around w/ various options w/ mplayer, but I can only improve it slightly at best. Am I missing something? Is it a size issue that it comes down to? The files are roughly 700mb for a 1 1/2 - 2 hr avi file.

When I play streaming video on hulu or other sites it is choppy. However, the sound is fine. Video files play fine when I download them.I experience this problem in both Firefox and Chrome. I have a 10MB connection on other Linux desktops the streaming video is fine.I imagine it is a flash issue, but I have the latest flash v10.1.The other solution would be a video downloader for streaming video. I have not found one that works on Linux.

I am elevating this thread up a level from [url] . Ubuntu 9.10 no longer streams without the screen pausing and going black every 2 minutes! Our product was just going into production and now we need to hopefully find a version of Ubuntu that streams video! We couldn't go with Unbuntu 10.04 because the video streaming was 30% slower than 9.10.

I'm not sure this is, strictly speaking, an Ubuntu problem (although it may be), but people around here seem to be more knowledgeable than they are anywhere else, so it's worth a try.
CNN recently started offering its news station on live streaming video for those who get CNN from a participating cable provider. For better or worse, I get CNN on Comcast, so no problem there.
Except for lagging video because lack of processing speed, it all works fine on my netbook, on which I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed.
But on my desktop, where I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, no such luck. The problem is the same regardless of whether I'm using Opera, Firefox or Chrome.
I can go to http://cnn.com/video and get the standard video streams (not CNN live) just fine. When I click on the "Live" button and then the "Unlock Live TV" button, I get, as expected, the "Sign in to watch live TV" dialogue box. So I click on Comcast, log in correctly, and am returned to the main screen. The page appears to be loading correctly, and then I get the "Sign in to watch live TV" dialogue box again. No matter how many times I try, that's what I keep on getting.
If this didn't work on my netbook, I'd just assume that for some reason the setup is Linux-unfriendly, but now I'm determined to get this working.
I've checked my plugin settings on my browsers and nothing seems amiss. I've tried deleting all cookies, persistent storage, Flash cookies and all such things, but to no avail. Even though I had the most recent version, I even uninstalled and reinstalled Flash, but that didn't change anything.

Is there anything that can be done to increase video streaming performance? The general impression I got is that it's mainly an adobe problem and not much can be done, though currently streaming is nearly unwatchable. When I switch from full screen to normal size many of the players freeze, ..... HD is unwatchable etc.

I am trying to get video streaming working to my iphone. I have everything working fine using Handbrake to convert to .m4v. I takes a 2.2gig and compresses it down to about 550 megs. Then I am just posting a link to a web page for now for the iphone to open.
It all works but after about 4 - 5 mins of video it needs to buffer. Is there anything I can do when encoding them to help? or is there some kind of video staging server that can be used?
