I am using ubuntu 9.10. After newly installation, it is quick for starting up and shudown.But I don't know why it becomes so slow that I have to press the power button to shut it down in force. how I can see what the system is doing in the shutdown process. Then maybe I can figure it out which application slows down the shutdown
View 1 RepliesI have been a Debian user for some time already, and lately I experienced a weird behaviour regarding shutdowns/restarts. The thing is my computer shuts down very very slowly, but not because of HDD activity, nor because of CPU activity (as far as I know, I may be wrong). It stops at some point, and after that, it hangs between 5 seconds and... even 5 minutes. The time in which comes back to normal and continues the shutdown process varies and has absolutely no pattern.
This is where it hangs (the last line appeared because I disconnected the mouse):
As the object, when I shutdown or restart my system, this will stuck on black screen for about 30/40 second and then continue...
My system is debian testing with kernel 4.1.0-2
Samba doesn't seem to disconnect on shutdown except by timing out, causing a loooong Lucid shutdown. (I can disconnect manually before shutdown by unmounting the Samba shares, and shutdown is then very fast.) Apparently Network Manager is somehow involved. I've installed a NM shutdown Samba script which works for the first user account, but not for the second user account (which was created and then put into the admin group).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI experienced what i perceive as the craziest thing during 2 years of using ubuntu. About some months ago, I have two ubuntu installed on my HP-mini netbook: ubuntu 10.04 64 bit (CAElinux) and kubuntu 10.04, and run without problem.
One day, the netbook's battery run out of charge and I forgot to plug it in. The ubuntu, as usual, went to hibernate, but without harddisk noise, so I forced it to shutdown by pressing power button (as i think it is not normal). What happened later was the partition of 10.04 was broken, it could not boot, it even affected another partition as the netbook couldn't boot kubuntu 10.04.
I try to run liveUSB and CD of both distro and the liveCD/USB boot stopped on loading screen. So I try another linux distro: PCLinuxOS, which was able to boot but took very long time. The partition of ubuntu 10.04 could not be accessed.
After installing PClinuxOS in replace of kubuntu, I scanned the ubuntu 10.04 partition and the partition was fixed, I could access the partition and could load to ubuntu 10.04, but it took very long time. Here how it loaded: first: blank screen with blinking cursor, then ubuntu load screen, then back to blank screen with blinking cursor, then it showed numbers and sentences, like some scanning works. It took long time before login screen appeared (about 10-15 minute, while the prevously normal boot time in my netbook was less than 1 minute), but once its done, the ubuntu worked normally. This also the case in the PClinuxOS and the reason it load very slowly.
After this, I try to boot the liveUSB of various linux distro, and found some could boot while the others not:

The liveUSB boot could take 1 hour. I also try the latest Puppy, Gentoo and OpenSuse liveUSB but it couldn't boot, and it likely the liveUSB problem. I made the all the liveUSB with unetbootin. The ubuntu 10.04, 10.10, kubuntu and the latest linuxmint could not boot even after I scanned the ubuntu 10.04 partition. There was no problem with the liveUSB as it would load normally on another computer. I think it is just the variant of ubuntu 10 that is not being able to boot.
I was not content on this slow boot, so I try to format the two partition of ubuntu and PClinuxOS (there are another partitions though), and installed ubuntu 8. But it also happened to boot slowly as the previous ubuntu. Then I replaced it with linuxmint 8, and the same occurred. So I try to install windows on another partition, and it boot normally.
The question is, what is happening. Why do the forced-shutdown-of-ubuntu-10.04 affect another partition, to the boot of another distro? If my HD was broken, the Windows would load very slowly too right? Yes, in SMART Data (from disk utility) it showed "few bad sector", but i think this is not related to the slow boot. The ubuntu 10.04, 10.10, kubuntu and the latest linuxmint cannot boot until this moment. I am thinking there are some informations planted on my computer, that twist it to load some distro slowly, and prevent it to load some others. But where and what? (I almost arrived to the thought that this is supernatural!)
Because of my long story up there (as I think it must be reported), the conclusion is:
1. Ubuntu 10.04 on my netbook was forced shutdown (by me)
2. It caused the partition broken
3. After fixing the partition (by scan, but I forgot the command), it took very long time to boot, but the ubuntu itself run normally
4. It also affected the boot of another distro (slow down the boot time), but Ms.Windows boot time is normal
5. It also caused ubuntu 10 (and its variant) to not be able to boot from liveCD/USB
6. It also caused me going crazy
Now im gonna format the whole HD in hope of ubuntu 10.04 (and later) could boot again, but shall it fix the problem? (as formatting the previously ubuntu 10.04 partition did not solve the problem). Or should I buy another HD (or even computer) to install natty!
I am using Debian sid 4.1.3-1 and when i shutdown the system it takes 3 - 5 minutes before actually shutdown, there is only a black screen until the hdd led start flashing and after that the system finally shutdown. The weird part is that sometimes it happen in less than 30 seconds , how can i figure out where the problem is ?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have installed a cluster computer with 10 nodes . The manufacturer is HP . All nodes and the master node have redhat enterprise linux installed in them . When I shutdown the nodes from the master terminal using "shutdown -h now" they get shutdown . But they dont get completely turned off . This issue bothers me when the power supply is given , all nodes boot up simultaneously generating a huge heat .
Thing to note : When we shutdown our PC they get completely turned off . When the power supply is given , a press on the Power On button is required to boot the system. But , why does it not happpen in the case of cluster? Is there any other way of completely turning off the nodes from the master terminal ?
when my pc boots and shuts down my monitor goes into 'input out of range' mode for a bit between the gui and the text only phases of boot/shutdown.is there a way to fix this? or where to start troubleshooting?also, when it shuts down it hangs after coming back to the text only part

If I stop vncserver before, the computer shuts down normally.

I cant shutdown without running sudo shutdown. When I try to use the default gnome shut down it takes me back to the logon screen. Fresh install today and I've had the same problem on other installs.
View 9 Replies View RelatedUbuntu will randomly pop up the shutdown menu and then shutdown.It seems to happen when im in firefox and typing and it has been difficult to replicate. I dont think it is a temp issue since watch sensors shows temmp of 40-50C. Someimtes it happens every minute someimtes i can go 10min without it happening.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI cannot locate shutdown log for Linux shutdown to check various activities carried out during shutdown. I can view Startup Log which is availble on console>Applications>System Tools>System Logs.
I have included Shutdown/Startup in dbora, so that Oracle 10gR2 Shutdown/Startup will be automated during OS Shutdown/Startup.
I want to check Shutdown log because Oracle Shutdown was not running, as from $ORACLE_HOME/shutdown.log contains no entries, where as startup log contains latest startup details.
That means here 2 issues are there. One, I want to locate OS Shutdown Log and the other being Why Oracle Shutdown not getting executed.
I'm an Ubuntu user since Jaunty, and I've always upgraded my system (NOT fresh install). Everything went fine, but yesterday I upgraded to Lucid. My only concern -for now- deals with startup time. I'm a desktop user (Core2@3GHz) so I think I should boot in less than 10 seconds. Anyway, boot time is 30 seconds - not too much, but there is definetly something wrong with tools I don't know (ureadahead, plymouth, etc.). Attached is my bootchart: can anyone explain me what's wrong?
Also, I don't even see a plymouth Ubuntu themed bootsplash: I only see a blank (black) screen standing for seconds, then I see the bootsplash for less then half a second, then GDM appears :S Not crucial -I know- but how can I fix it? (I don't know if it's related, but I can see the animation at shutdown)Finally, GNOME desktop takes too long to load. I don't know why, but there are 15/30 seconds in between login sound and a usable desktop (with panels and icons, I mean).Please help me, I don't want to do a fresh install. View 9 Replies View RelatedWhenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!
When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!
This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.
I did a live upgrade from 11.3 KDE and observe a following issue.When I press the shutdown button on the laptop it initiates the shutdown and shuts down fine but after a significant delay of time (something like 30 seconds). When I click the shutdown button in KDE it initiates the shutdown instantly. This was not the case in 11.3 where the shutdown worked the same regardless of the method that triggered it

I have good experience in microsoft enviroment, now tiring to use linux, i tried Ubuntu 9.10, OpenSuse on different computers bur there is same big problem: Very slow download speed compared to microsoft.same file at same time downloaded by microsoft winxp toke incomparable short time. for example file 5.5MB attached to e-mail on Yahoo toke ~1minute to download on winxp computer,same file at same computer but with Ubuntu takes more thane 30minutes!

Not having a record for the following shutdown, last assumes that the system has been up until the current time and similarly for the shutdown.
The output comes in time order, latest first, each line showing the time of the reboot and the uptime from then to shutdown. Using last -x reboot shutdown to show the shutdown time, here's an illustration

The boot started at "Wed Mar 10 14:12" which had an actual uptime of 1 day 11:20 is reported as 15 days 03:13 which is the time from then until the last -f /var/log/wtmp.1 -x reboot shutdown command was issued. The time from shutdown to shutdown is similarly affected.
I'm new to Ubuntu and have spent several days trying to make a few simple alterations to my Myth 9.10 installation. My biggest task was to get the MCE "power" and "start" buttons working, which they now are - sort of.
The problem is with the shutdown command that the power button activates seems to be different to the shutdown command from the taskbar shutdown menu i.e. when I switch off the computer with the remote it restarts with the "recovery" menu as it wasn't shutdown properly. Same thing happens with the shutdown command from a terminal window. Shutting off from the desktop menu is fine.
can anyone tell me the difference between "sudo shutdown now" and "sudo shutdown 0"
i know that "sudo shutdown 0" will shutdown the system in 0 seconds. but when i run sudo shutdown now my system goes into the maintenance mode?? what is maintenance mode??
In 10.04 when I go to shutdown it brings me to the login window and I try to shutdown from there and it does nothing. Any work arounds for this bug?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am currently running Ubuntu 10.10 on my Maxdata ECO4700IW laptop. Everything works great except after I have started utorrent the laptop freezes on the shutdown splash screen. A couple of the dots turn on and then it freezes there. Rebooting works fine however.
I have already tried killing utorrent and wine at the command line using
killall -9 uTorrent.exe
killall wineserver
winserver -k
I was using wine 1.0.2 but downgraded to 1.0.1 however still had the same problem.
I installed ubuntu 10.10 32bit on my computer and it does not shutdown properly, it hangs on the desktop wallpaper. i also installed linux mint 32bit and it has the same problem. but when i installed ubuntu 10.10 64bit, it does not have that problem.

View 14 Replies View RelatedIs there anything in Karmic that would get something to run at shutdown?I have a US Robotics 56K message modem ( USR5668 ) which receives faxes during the day, and has to switch to answer machine / fax at night. It has a memory when the computer is switched off - which is handy, and all the phones switch over to the message modem extension automatically.All I want is to do is send the command AT+MCA=1 to the serial port ttyS0 at shutdown.
Any sportster owners might say that this goes to answer machine only, so if they want to tell me the correct string for answer/fax please feel free.I do have vm installed (or whatever vgetty calls it),

I have a recently new, less than 2 weeks old, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installl. It is a clean install since the prior install of 10.04 LTS decided it would no longer allow me to login.
My problem is that I cannot shutdown or restart my machine. And I have no idea why it happened.
