I have Ubuntu 9.10 on my dell xps 1330m laptop. I upgrade from Jaunty. I have been running this os for roughly 3 months and have had no problems. But lately my laptop has been hanging, making me resort to a forced shutdown (holding down the power button).

I've been attempting to install 32-bit Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell Studio 1749 with the intention of making a dual-boot system. Attempting to install with a live CD using the default settings, I got as far as pressing ENTER on "Install Ubuntu" before the screen went completely black. The CD drive spun wildly, but nothing ever appeared on the screen. I tried the fix detailed here:

typing "nomodeset" as an option, and using the "apic=off" option. When I did this, I was no longer greeted with a blank black screen, but instead with a blinking cursor, but the installation still hung. The keyboard was unresponsive and I could not open a terminal. I also tried using the alternate installer instead, and got the same results.
After this, I tried installing using wubi, and on boot I get exactly the same results: black screen without "nomodeset" and a blinking cursor otherwise.
I should also mention that the same thing happens for every option on the installation screen, including the option to "try ubuntu" by booting from the CD.
Does anyone know what could be causing this issue, and how I might install ubuntu on my machine?
I'm currently trying to install ubuntu but the installation process hangs on the second page of the installation (right after select language) I am booting from a usb. NO other OS is installed and I'm currently in "try it now" mode.

I have tried both the nomodeset and noprobe and still to no avail. I have also tried installing ubuntu and the installer will not run so im at a loss. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been running 32 bit karmic (and before that jaunty, intrepid and hardy) with no problems on my Dell D620 laptop. Since I upgraded to lucid, I get occasional freezes. It often happens at the gnome login screen after I click on my name but before I can enter the password, or upon restore from suspend but sometimes at other times. It doesn't happen all the time but often enough to be really annoying. When the freeze occurs, the mouse pointer responds to the touchpad or an external usb mouse, but no mouse button events are recognized and the keyboard has no effect either. I can't switch virtual terminals or anything. If the system was up and had a DHCP address at the time of the freeze, I believe the network still responds to ping. The only thing I can do to get the system back is hold the power button for 30 seconds until it powers off. The desktop CPU temperature monitor does not indicate excessive heating at the time of the freeze. I don't know whether I should try a re-install of lucid, or just go back to karmic.

I was trying to install openSUSE 11.2 on Dell XPS Studio, model PP35L, but loading kernel hangs at 94%, I tried F5 for Safe Settings, No APIC, No Local ACPI, Check Installation Media, but it still hangs at 94%. Installation works fine on older computer. Is it because openSuse kernel doesn't recognize the i5 Core processor yet? If this is caused by a driver, is there a way to display the kernel messages and what would be the kernel boot options to disable loading of that driver?

I would just keep it on all the time, so if there was a problem with it booting previously, I wouldn't have known about it. I recently installed long overdue updates, and when I restarted the computer, it wasn't able to boot. I've tried several times, and I always get the same black screen with white text, and a message it gives me. I'll put that message below the dotted line on this post. There was a series of numbers in there, but I'm not posting those just in case it would be a security risk (not sure if it's a code or something).

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 desktop and burned the CD. I changed the boot order on my Dell Inspiron 8100 to search for CD first. On startup, I see it flash - ISO LINUX something ............ The light flashes on my CD drive for a minute or so. I see a little icon at bottom of screen with a stick figure of a man and something else for a few seconds, then I see a white cloud flash on the screen that reduces in size and disappears, after another minute or so of the drive light flashing everything stops and still a black screen. Then, I tried hitting escape key a couple of times and I heard a few seconds of jungle music. The drive light flashes again for a while but nothing else happens. It seems like it's almost there, but not making it all the way for some reason.
By the way, if it matters, my Dell hard drive is partitioned to C: and D: I thought it would run a little faster that way, but not really noticable. I have most everything on C: right now. I hope to install side by side as I have a couple of applications I need Windows for, but would like to use Ubuntu for everything else. More questions about that later, on getting it to boot from the CD?
Since posting the above earlier under Dell, I have been able to boot from a borrowed 9.04 disk okay. And, was able to boot another computer with the 10.04 disk that I burned. The disk is apparently good, so why doesn't 10.04 work and 9.04 does?

I have a old Dell Inspiron Laptop I would like to use, but it dosent have awhole lot of memory 160megs worth and tried running the live cd of Ubuntu and Lubuntu and all i get on the screen is a blinking cursor. It give me the option to boot off the cd but that is where it stops.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Latitude CPi that has 400MHz Intel Processor and 256 MB of ram. It has a Neomagic Corporation NM2360 [MagicMedia 256ZX]. I have it set to 16 bit color depth and it is using the neomagic driver. My problem is that it cannot play any video of any size flash, or saved to hard drive. It has a fps so low that I can see it rendering each frame going across the screen. It doesn't seem to have a problem with animated pictures, just actual video files. I don't know whether or not this matters but the card set is known to not support 3d acceleration. I can run any commands in terminal and have a good understanding of the linux environment. This problem has occurred under Ubuntu and Xubuntu and still happens if I use a light weight WM like fluxbox.

I have a single HD with three partitions currently,
1. Primary Boot Partition for Windows - 475 GB (100 GB free)
2. Recovery Drive for Windows - 9.88 GB
3. OEM Partition - 361 MB
Now I shrank my primary volume giving the ubuntu installation drive around 30 GB (enough?). However, I am unable to make a swap partition because dell laptops apparently do not allow more than 4 partitions?I read somewhere that it does not allow more that 4 primary partitions, but we can have more logical drives in an extended partition. I am totally confused about this. How do we do it then? Can a swap partition be a logical drive? Also, I heard (I may be completely wrong) that there are some MBR issues when you install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7.
I have Lucid running on a Toshiba Portg R500. Last week it started hanging for just over one minute at the initial Toshiba screen. That is, the screen with the Toshiba logo and a series of boot-from options (HDD, CD, Network, USB) along the bottom. I don't know if the machine is even interacting with the OS at this stage. Also, neither Ubuntu nor the machine recognises the CD-ROM tray any longer. As in, I can't boot from CD and I also can't mount a CD when in Ubuntu. I can, however, boot from a USB startup disk (after the one minute delay).
I'm not sure how to collect helpful data on this sort of issue, especially since I can't see any threads that point to similar problems. The only strange thing I did the day this problem started was to forget to unmount a truecrypt-encrypted USB key before shutting the laptop off.
I've reinstalled Lucid but to no avail. I assume that whatever problem I have is a BIOS problem (and so strictly not for here)? As you can imagine though I want to make sure I've accounted for all other possibilities before fooling around with the BIOS.
I have a laptop cooler that sits under my laptop and has 4 USB ports on the back. It plugs into my laptop via USB and that is the only source of power it has. The issue is when I try to boot Ubuntu with it plugged in it hangs forever and if I unplug it then it seems to boot up just fine. This happens even if nothing is plugged into the ports on the cooler. I also notice that if I plug the cooler in after Ubuntu is fully booted it will work but does not see things plugged into it every time.

I have a Dell Latitude D610 that was given to me and I currently have Ubuntu 10.04 installed. I am trying to get the internal microphone working for gchat.
If I go to System-->Preferences-->Sound-->Hardware it says: Choose a device to configure and Internal Audio, 1 Output/1 Input Analog Stereo Duplex is highlighted.
Settings for the selected device: Analog Stereo Duplex is selected on the dropdown menu.
When I select the Input tab: Input Volume is at 100% the box for Mute is unchecked Connector Analog Microphone/Microphone 1 is selected on the drop down menu for Connector and the device for sound input: Internal Audio Analog Stereo is selected.
How can I configure my microphone to work?

I've tried to put it on 1680x1050 and it worked out well I guess but the graphics had become very slow. For example I have to wait 5 to 6 seconds to scroll from page to page in a pdf file. Minimizing a window takes also a lot of time. I have a NVIDIA card in my PC.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just used Update Manager to upgrade to 10.4 and all I get is the Ubuntu logo screen with the dots and then the screen goes black and there's no other response. This happened after the upgrade completed installing and I received the message to restart the computer. I have never been able to get it to boot.
I can boot fine by selecting the next older kernal although I do get some messages that I don't understand. It all works so I presume it's OK. The kernal that was installed with the upgrade is 2.6.32-24-generic and I've seen other posts about boot problems with it. The laptop is dual boot with Windows XP and Windows boots normally. I saw a suggestion on another thread about booting into an older kernal and then issuing the sudo update-intramfs -u -k command. I tried it and it didn't help.
Next I tried 2.6.32-24-generic recovery mode and I tried the option to fix damaged packages. It seemed to do something although I saw error messages about not being able to find various software sources. I tried a normal boot afterwards and same problem. Recovery mode has another menu option about repairing grub but I don't want to try that. I'm not a power user and this is all over my head. Before I turn the laptop into an unusable door stop,
I'm trying to install Lubuntu 11.04 CD on a Compaq Presario M2000 Laptop to replace XP.
Processor: Intel Pentium Celeron M
RAM: 256mb
Existing O/S XP SP3 (boots & runs but is very slow)
Hard Drive 40GB (28Gb free)
Installation hangs about 1 minute after selecting language in both try Lubuntu & install Lubuntu modes. Have also left the laptop running all night to see if it was just a slow install. Have tried various other disks (Xbuntu, Puppy, Mint, Lubuntu 10.04), which have worked on other PC/laptops ok, but all stall after the language settings. Have tried burning the Lunbuntu iso with both Windows & Ubuntu at slow speeds & have verified the burnt iso. The laptop BIOS cannot be set to boot from usb, so an external CD or USB stick installation may not work? The BIOS has been updated to the latest one on the Compaq web site this morning. Although I have installed a few flavours of Linux on various hardware, I'm still a real Linux newbie. Can Lubuntu be installed within Windows, but still format the hard drive to ext2/3 ?
