Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Monitor Turning Off
May 5, 2011
I just did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 on my PC. Installation went smoothly, and I can boot it and log in.
If i leave it there running, nothing happens, but as soon as i try to run an application (Firefox, Update Manager, etc), the screen turns off and I can't do anything else anymore except reboot.
I was able to apply the latest updates using apt-get update from the terminal (one of the very few apps that doesn't turn the screen off), but can't get rid of the problem, what can i do?
My PC is a Intel Core i5 PC with a Nvidia Gefore 210 graphics card.
I was able to install the proprietary drivers for Nvidea, no change. Both Unity and "Ubuntu Classic" have this issue

If I turn off the monitors, I get a black screen (the monitors goes to power save) when I turn them on again.
I have a workaround which involves pressing ctrl-alt and f3 and then ctrl-alt f7. That usually works and brings up the graphical login-screen. And I get my session back.
But sometimes when I log in, my session is gone. It is as if I was logged out or the system has rebooted.
I have two monitors and Nvidia.

I have a netbook (Acer Aspire One) I'm running Slackware 13. and usually, I prefer to connect an external monitor. When I switch my machine on with the monitor connected, the display is duplicated on both screens and since I just want the netbook's screen to be off and only see the display on the external monitor, I can doxrandr --output LVDS --off
Great! However, it's a hassle to do this every time I log in and I'd like to automate the process if possible. I did some googling and I found that if you want to automate xrandr commands, you can put a script in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ (see this). I wrote the following script to automate my xrandr commands and since the Xsession.d directory didn't exist, I tried creating it. The script was called 45custom-xrandr_settings, as the one on the RandR wiki is called the same.
Code:
#!/bin/bash
# Check whether the external monitor is connected
[code]...

Having just successfully installed fallout 3 (yippee), one question arises.
Is it possible to turn off (and eventually back on) all superfluous process during gaming ? As an ex-win xp user, there was an app called "game booster", i think, that did this.
The process i have in mind are things like fancy compiz settings, dockbar X, and any upgrades that might be taking place in the background.
Again, it is important that i can restart these functions after kicking super-mutant ***.

I have been using Ubuntu 10.4 trouble free for the last week or so with the exception of one problem. Without warning, my computer shuts off. When I turn the computer back on, it skips the log in page. The turn off is very abrupt and happens without warning. It happened twice when I first installed the OS and has not happened at all until today when it happened twice again. Is this a common issue. It seems like a very odd way for a computer to crash.

I'd can't seem to find a preference to turn off gedit's default behaviour of opening a new file in a new tab. I'd like it to open in a new window, so I can view two pages of code side by side. How can I convince gedit to open a new instance?

I have just finished installing 10.04 on my EEE 900A. Stuff works flawlessly insofar as I can tell. The one remaining thing I am still trying to figure out is how to turn_off the touchpad. Is this doable with some utility that I can grab from Some repo??

I have the dm1 3020 (the version found in most stores) with the ralink rt5390 wifi/BT card that so many people have been posting about, and would like to know how to make sure the bluetooth is disabled. Since I don't have any BT stuff to connect and really want to get all the battery life I can out of this thing I am using Ubuntu 11.04 with KDE, if there is a plasma widget I could use to make sure its disabled? There is no BT icon in the notifications area on the bar.

I have an issue where the screen on my laptop will not shut off with the power management tool. The Default Power Manager does not have an option for this.My screen will go blank after a set amount of time, but the lcd-backlight will remain on. I would want the power manager to shut the screen off completely (including turning off the lcd backlight) without shutting down the computer it-self. So the computer can continue to do what I left it to do in the case I forget to close the lid. With the screen shut off completely, will preserve the life of the back light and reduce power consumption.
Is there a better power manager app that will allow me to do this a tweak to the existing default power manager that will allow the functionality I am seeking? laptop was perfectly able to do this under a win-xp environment, so I know the machine is physically capable of doing this. Note: My WinXP OS and Ubuntu OS are on seperate physical drives so there is no dual boot issues. So when I am using one there is no trace of the other present

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit version and everything worked fine so far except for the fglrx driver as it seems. I wasn't able to enable desktop effects and couldn't start games like openarena or nexuiz.
Therefore, I installed the fglrx driver from ATI's site and got everything working fine. Unfortunately it introduced a problem with vlc and the window manager in general. If I go into fullscreen in vlc it takes at least 2 seconds until the screen reacts. Also, if I tab through windows there is at least a second delay which is all very very annoying. I removed the driver again and re-installed fglrx from the repos. I now have two entries for the Catalyst Control Center (normal + administrative) under System->Prefrences which is annoying but not the reason for this thread.
The main problem remains the delay with window tabbing (with desktop effects disabled) and vlc going into fullscreen (this also applies for ..... videos which also lag in fullscreen mode).
The card is a Radeon HD 4830, processor is an AMD Phenom II X4 810.

I installed Touchpad and its says:
GSynaptics couldn't initialize. You have to set 'SHMConfig' 'true' in xorg.conf or XF86Config to use GSynaptics
I find out at this link this link that I need to create a xorg.conf file by typing:
sudo Xorg -configure
In terminal. However, when I do I get the following message, and no such file gets created.
Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0. If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again.

I want my video card to stop processing an image to my integrated monitor and only process images to my external monitor.
My problem is that I use my Toshiba Satellite M65 (which is a laptop) as a desktop: I use an external monitor, external keyboard, and of course an external mouse. I only recently started using Ubuntu after many years of Windows XP and I just realized that both my laptop's integrated monitor and my external monitor are 'on', displaying the same image. I want my video card to stop processing an image to my integrated monitor.

I have a problem with my internet connection. It is turning on and off all the time. I can maybe surf 3 sites without a problem then the internet goes really slow and after that I wont be able to surf at all. After a while it works fine. I can't even look on ..... videos because all of them stop at half or before. I have connected to my router through my cellphone and my ps3 and those two are working just fine.
I am running ubuntu 10.04 64bits. I don't know what network card my computer has.

turning a Ubuntu 10.04 desktop into a server. Ok, so let me start off with my goal. I am using this machine for hosting only 1 website using joomla, php, mysql, and apache. I want a desktop version because I dont like the black and white terminal.
At this point I have successfully installed all Ubuntu 10.04 desktop and all updates.
When searching around for this solution, I found that I could run the command sudo apt-get install ubuntu-server and get all the features the server edition has. When running this command it comes back telling me that it cannot be found. I also found that both the server and desktop edition are the same but the desktop edition comes with all the extras that I will need to delete. I also found out that I will need to use lamp on the server to get php and all the other server stuff, but I also found that some people recommended that I install the server apps using the synaptic search. My question is, what route should I take to turn this ubuntu 10.04 desktop into a dedicated web server. (Not Test Server). Remember, I would like to stay with the desktop and not black and white terminal.

I have this computer that loads up a magnifying glass sort of application on the right half of the screen during the log in. ie. when choosing accounts and typing in the password screen. So far: I tried turning off visual assistance from start-up. I also uninstalled compiz from the installed software.
Neither have seemed to have disabled it. The Computer is running Ubuntu 10.04.1 with the latest updates.Does anybody have any suggestions for me? I will try to post a screen shot of it when I get time to.

I have posted questions on several Linux forums that asked how I could turn off the touchpad on my new EEE-900A netbook. There is a backstory that is not that relevant, but in a nutshell, I got this tiny low-power computer to be my voice since my speech is impaired. Only the latest Debian has the tools I needed.
After much searching, suggested that I remove the touchpad driver; the command as root: # rmmod psmouse
Did the trick. On the 900A, the protocol that handles the touchpad is the PS/2. Removing the psmouse driver module does not affect my USB mouse, so now I can use my USB mouse and type away with my left hand and bumping into the touchpad doesn't screw things up. In other words: Success. (I am being as explicit as possible so that all search engines will find this.

I've got a little netbook, and all works fine, except for one small thing. I'm able to connect to a wireless network with my Atheros AR5001 just fine. However, if I right click on the network icon, and disable network or wireless and enable it again, wireless won't work anymore. I can't see and connect to any network at all. Except when using airodump-ng from the famous aircrack-ng tool set. When using airodump I'm able to see any network and their specs just fine. I don't even have to be in monitor mode to do airodump-ng (the wireless must be off in the network manager though). Is there any way of getting my wireless back when I turn it on again?

i updated to lucid lynx from karmic (i could not get wireless to work on that either) with the hope that wireless might actually work but it doesn't, the keys to turn wifi on don't even work with lucid there is no way to get the wireless to even give me a light that says its on. I have tried installing the rt3090-dkms package and it installed fine (took ages) however that has done nothing at all. It is kind of pointless having a netbook without wireless so anyone got any ideas this is getting very annoying I have yet to use wifi since i bought the netbook

Just upgraded to 10.04. Everything seems to still work on my Macbook, with a bonus being the buttons to modify the keyboard backlight brightness seem to work now.
However, the only caveat is that I can't seem to turn off the backlight. Pressing the dim button all the way to off just seems to reset to full brightness. Even if I set the brightness to 1 (almost off), the backlight seems to reset itself to full brightness at seemingly random times.
Running this command used to turn it off, but now doesn't work:
Code:
echo 0 | sudo tee -a /sys/class/leds/smc::kbd_backlight/brightness
Is this a bug? How do I turn off the keyboard backlight?

I just installed Mythbuntu 10.04 and have my Sony LCD TV connected via a DVI to HDMI cable. The issue I am encountering is that everything works fine until I turn off the TV and turn it back on later, because the screen stays blank and from what the TV tells me there is no signal. I have no idea what can cause this. I checked the TV settings in terms of power saving and turned it all off. I turned off the screen saver in Ubuntu, but still the same issue. My motherboard uses the ATI HD4200 onboard graphics engine
