i want to use linux but i am having some issues getting it to work on my system. my desktop is a p4 3.4gig with 512 DDR. When I insert my ubuntu CD it starts loading but then i get this screen/message:

(however it won't allow me to get online, but that is a different issue).
So i insert the ubuntu 10.10 in the dvd and boot it. The menu comes up and i choose to install ubuntu. After that it shows some black screens and this error:
(initramfs)mount:mounting/dev/loop0 on//filesystem.squashfs failed: Input/output error cannot mount /dev/loop0(/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs)on//filesystem.squashfs
The disc aint scratched. I tried installing from Windows but i got another error.
And for some odd reason Ic ant make a removable startup disk:
I upgraded 9.10 to 10.04 via the web. The program announced it would take several hours, and when I came back to check, computer was off (kids?). Anyway, machine boots and 10.04 starts, but then blinks a few times and goes to a prompt. What should I tell it?
I have a 10.04 disc too, but it won't run from that either (Cannot mount dev/loop0 on filesystem.squashfs failed). Same message when I tried to start a nearby Windows machine with it. Disc "verified" when I made it. What's with that?
I've just got a new laptop with 4GB RAM available, in order to fully utilize the available memory I'm going to install Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 64bit, but when I boot with Live CD, I always get the following errors:

so i have done a partition for windows on my MBP, i dowloaded latest ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition, burned the iso , restarted , boted form cd and i get htis error: Whats the problem ? when i try to download the desktop edition it says i need to use a usb stick to install it. does this means that usb stick has to always plugged in?

I've been thinking and reading but I really don't find a solution, and this is why I decided to post here. I'm not a newbie using Linux but I know absolutely nothing about nfs and related stuff. If explanations are not clear/precise I'm sorry and absolutely open to explain myself better (I'm really desperate, at this point).
I'm running a Debian in a VirtualBox inside a RHEL5. To supply space to the virtual machine I'm trying to mount a disk (? maybe not?) that I created in the RHEL.
In RHEL: I created a directory /some/path/dir and I granted access to it from the VM (edit /etc/exports file and restart the nfs service)
In Debian: I created a directory to be used as mounting point (mkdir /other/nice/path/dir) and I tried to mount (mount -t nfs -v redhat:/some/path/dir /other/nice/path/dir). What happens next is the following:
mount.nfs: timeout set for Thu ... mount.nfs: text-based options ... mount.nfs: mount(2): Input/output error mount.nfs: mount system call failed
Now, this Input/output error is too vague to trace where the problem is, but I really have no idea about how to go more in depth (are there logs somewhere? What should I look for? ... ...).
xubuntu iso was downloaded with wget on Kubuntu, I did a md5sum checksum in terminal which passed, also K3b's check passed. K3b burned iso with no errors, I set speed at 4x. I made two coasters before getting this far but it still won't get past the BusyBox built-in shell prompt after choosing my language and staring at the xfce mouse for a minute:

my friend using XP and it was closed because he didnt activate it . he want to try Linux , i adviced him to use UBUNTU 10.10, but after we order the boot we got a loading screen for ubuntu then this error appeared

I have had a dual boot on my system since first trying Ubuntu a few months ago.I had a few problems when i upgraded to 11.04 (mainly due to the new desktop Unity), but after some great help here, we had the old desktop running again.I have Windows running on my spare Computer in case i should need it for any reason, though can not think of one lol Now i am used to Ubuntu (from the using side, get lost in terminal etc so here i come if i need help) i decided i would totally commit my main computer to Ubuntu.I downloaded the latest iso from the Ubuntu site, and burnt it to CD, inserted in my main computer & rebooted. It goes past the first purple ubuntu page (hit a key to choose language & also get a selection Menu) then goes to black screen and i get:

The trouble I'm having is that when I load a bootable USB/CD of 64bit 10.10, I always get an error that looks a little like: "(initramfs) mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: input/output error. Can not mount /dev/loop0 (cdrom/casperfilesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs." I've done some googling and I've noticed people have had the same problem. They say the alternate downloads could be the problem, or the CD, and that I should use the UNetbootin application. I guess I should start with describing my build:

I've tried:
1. Going to the DL page, DLing 64bit 10.10, and mounting the image to create a bootable CD (by the procedure offered on the DL page).
2. Using Unetbootin to create a bootable USB (this I did multiple tmes, with different versions: 10.10 64bit desktop, 10.04 64 bit desktop, and I'm about to try another DL except I forgot which one I'm using, but I'll find out in a bit )..........
I have a strange issue with my RAID5 array - it worked fine for a month, a couple days ago it didn't start on boot with mdadm reporting "Input/Output error" - I didn't panic restarted my computer, same error. Then opened a Disk utility and it reported State: Not running, partially assembled - don't know why, I've pressed Stop RAID Array and started it again, voila - it reported State: Running - I've checked components list and there was nothing wrong with it. So I run Check Array utility, waited almost 3 hours to finish it and it worked since than, till today's morning - I've started my computer, and here we go, same error.

I can see nothing wrong there yet not sure why mdadm fails on boot. I do not really like the windows solution I guess, when I check my array again, it will work fine again, but it then can fail in the same way without known reason.
I use the tool here (as recomended by Ubuntu) to put it on my USB. It seems to work well up until it says "Data error in 'casper/filesystem.squashfs'. File is broken".
I tried to install it anyways (I know how to work the BIOS and everything) and the installation just stops with an error message.
I had a LiveUSB of CentOS 5.5, so I decided the install it.With no installer,I just copied the files to my hard drive.his was in a multi boot with Windows 7, Ubuntu 9.10, and FreeDOS.I updated GRUB2 and it detected CentOS. I loaded my entry and it failed to mount the root filesystem.I took the initrd0 file from the LiveUSB syslinux folder and added that ramdisk to the entry. Now it finds the root filesystem (/dev/sda9 as Ext3).But it fails shortly after loading /sbin/init. It talks about an init error where it says "File not found!!!".The previous lines involved umounting old filesystems, like /dev.

Trying to install 10.04.1 Kubuntu desktop to Toshiba T110 laptop running Win 7, 4 Gig Ram, 32 bit o/s. Downloaded iso from Ubuntu web site and burnt DVD. No matter what I do I get the error message "cannot mount /dev/lop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem. squashfs" etc. Searched by Google and this forum, tried various remedies Unebootin; USB drive boot up etc etc; still get same message. Is there a workaround for what seems to be a fairly common install problem?
I have a box which was upgraded to 10.04 server. I also installed the ubuntu-desktop package and it's configured to autologon a user and then vino shares the user's desktop to the network. I do it this way because the server has no monitor/keyboard/mouse attached.
The problem I had, is that "if" one of the filesystems fails to mount at bootup. The machine sits there waiting for keyboard input on what it should do.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on a dell desktop from idk when, its fairly old but regardless it was all running fine until about a week ago I got the infamous:
Mount of filesystem failed. A maintenance shell will now be started. Control-D will terminate this shell and start a new one. admin@ or whatever it is you get the point.
I've been trying all the possible solutions I could find and nothing seems to work. I just want to be able to use this computer. I don't care if I lose files, or have to re-install Ubuntu or any of that, if I can just get the thing running again. I've tried re-installing, and booting from the disc etc. none of which have worked. Basically, I just want to erase Ubuntu and re-install it.
I have a dual booting newly installed 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10 on my machine. It was all fine until today. Now when I boot into Ubuntu, I see the error Failed to mount root filesystem. I cant remember any significant changes during the last session. One thing I remember is I upgraded the system using the update manager which asked me to choose an option for grub boot loader. I opted for its upgradation. After the upgrade, I was able to work with Ubuntu for a few more sessions. Windows XP works very fine.I checked other threads which suggested running fsck, but it did not help. fsck does not report any errors.
I have a 64 bit Karmic system with two drives. One is mounted as / and the other is mounted as /home. I just put the video card from my system into my son's system and got a new video card. A good USB stick reads & writes in another laptop running Ubuntu 9.10. When I connect the USB to the Crashed Machine it starts with: "assuming drive cashe: write through", and hangs on this tell I press: "Ctrl+C" In the crashed machine I can't seem to get into the USB anywhere that I think it should show up and trying to "mkdri" got me: "Read only file system".
Today went from jaunty to koala then to lucid. The package manager doesnt work nothing works in terminal for apt-get or anything getting the message ---->

A friend of mine upgraded his pc to ubuntu 10.04. Sadly enough we ran into issues with his graphics card, which apparently doesnt work well with lucid. We decided to downgrade to 9.10. I did this by installing over the old partition and chose to import the settings from the old account.The problems started when the pc booted for the first time:The list of kernels in grub2 was the one from 10.04.Somehow grub2 from the old installation seems to be still around and messes everything up. Any ideas how I could fix this?
