CentOS 5 Hardware :: 4k Sectors (Advanced Drive Format In WD Lingo) And RAID1

Dec 29, 2010

I have 2 WD20EARS hard drives on the way (2 TB green WD disks with 4k sectors) and I'll be installing Centos 5.5 in RAID1 on them (2 partitions, one 16 GB / at the beginning and the rest in its own partition). I read the following thread: [URL]

and it seems that I might be having problems with the 4k sectors (Advanced Drive Format in WD lingo). I'm confused as to what exactly to do. I was thinking of downloading Fedora 14 Live CD and partitioning there and then switching to Centos 5.5 to install. Will that work? Seems I want the md 0.9 metadata because it doesn't have the space limit for me (2 TB) and it's stored at the end of the partition so it avoids alignment issues. Will I be able to make that happen with Fedora 14?

Ubuntu :: Easy Way To Dual-boot And Windows

Jan 13, 2010

I am finally running Ubuntu and Windows (and also Puppy Linux).I just switch to Linux from windows by accident. I got a new computer with a wizard to install Vista -which I do not have, I tried to install XP and the computer would NOT budge. All the instructions I got from a friend who actually works with computers would not work.I installed Ubuntu 9.10 without any problem and the computer worked immediately. Needless to say, right away I discovered the simplicity versatility and comprehensiveness of Linux and Ubuntu is now my main OS.

However, I had so much invested in Windows that I wanted to explore the option of running a dual boot for the occasional trip to Windows. The forums provide a lot of help, unfortunately I am not familiar with commands and could not complete the instructions provided.I had installed Ubuntu in its own partition and Puppy Linux in a logical drive in an extended partition. Every time I installed Windows, Ubuntu would fail and vice-versa. Interestingly, Puppy Linux would work normally every time. Sorry about all this convoluted introduction, I'll get to the point.I figure that the installation of Windows disabled only one other OS. So I made two 5GB partitions and installed Ubuntu in each (Ubuntu2 and Ubuntu). Then I installed Windows and Hurra! I had Ubuntu, Windows and Puppy Linux working. Ubuntu2 would not appear, but I did not care. I deleted the partition and extended Ubuntu's partition to 10GB.

Server :: Easy File Sharing On Windows... Without SMB?

Jun 16, 2010

Question for the sys admin types:So, say you want to do file sharing in an environment with a lot of Windows clients, but you want the shared data on a Linux server. You can use SAMBA, and that will make all the Windows clients happy (provided, of course, that you can get SAMBA working correctly). But is this your only option?I mean, obviously you can use ssh/sftp. But the Windows sftp clients I have tried don't make the file sharing process as simple for non-techies: you either just get a command-line, or you get some kind of two-pane application view like with filezilla or cuteFTP; it isn't as integrated into the desktop as what you get when using native SMB file sharing. So, is there Windows software you can install that can make the file sharing experience very non-expert friendly with some protocol like ssh/sftp or NFS?

Programming :: Shell Translator Utility ?

Jul 25, 2010

Usability? Home: you use bash. Work, school, vacation, seminar: you're stuck using zsh or tcsh (or Drush in Drupal).

Function: Without giving errors, quietly cross-checks a non-shell command for its equivalent in the running shell and executes that command, properly-syntaxed.

Name: Well, as the word "imperative" in rudimentary linguistics is a synonym for "command," I thought of an acronym derived from the terms SHell Imperatives Translator. But this morning, I re-thought the lavatorial acronym. Considering it was a "container" of "hooks" that had the potential to operate much like a stripped-down cron or Ubuntu hook bundle, a more polite term for it would be "tacklebox".

I currently have a VPS(virtual private server) that runs Slackware 12. The image was made way back in 2007, and obviously it hasn't been updated. The version is VERY minimal, it doesn't even have all the packages from A, but I can get any I want and install as I wish.Is there an easy way to update 12 to 12.2? Going to 13 is probably out of the question without a clean install over a network and doing it remotely, which is probably beyond my capabilities.I can't mess with the kernel unfortunately, but I can install practically any packages.

Fedora Networking :: Static IP's The Easy Way

Dec 12, 2010

I've seen a lot of questions on the forum about static IP's and how often people have problems configuring them. Here is how it works:

If you have a router in your network, the router is the boss. You can configure anything you want in your computer's network manager, but in the end, the router will win. Say you have 3 computers and configure each one for a static IP. If the router is still set to assign IP's dynamically, it may want to ignore that unless you boot the computers in order of IP#. In other words if you set your IP's to .001. .002, and .003 you have to boot the one with .001 first to be sure it gets that IP.

If you boot .002 first the router wants to assign it the first IP in the list; .001. If the computer will only accept .002 the router may (or may not depending on the router) eventually assign it .002, or you end up with a power struggle between the computer and the router, and have no connection to that computer.

That said sometimes setting IP's on each computer works, at least most of the time, again depending on the router. Some routers will assign the same IP to the same computer when each has individual settings, but even then you still have to deal with settings on each computer; a lot of work. And at some point you will probably still have a glitch or problem, at least temporarily. In my experience setting static IP's on the computers is hit or miss in the long run.

If you set the static IP's in the router and make sure the router recognizes each computer by it's MAC address it's a done deal. You can boot the computers in any order, they will always be assigned the same IP, and you don't have to do anything on any of your your computers or in your network managers to make it happen. Bada bing, bada boom, done. Less work, more stable network, fewer headaches.

Ubuntu :: Difference Between 10.04 NBE And Easy Peasy?

Apr 26, 2010

I'm using NBE on 10.04RC, I've just seen Easy Peasy 1.6 on Distro Watch so ran the live CD out of curiosity. Menu etc looks the same.. don't look at menu on their website as that's the one based on 9.04 [URL]

This is part of the release note:"Features: new boot system and new boot artwork (uses Plymouth); sports full removal of the HAL package, making EasyPeasy faster to boot and faster to resume from suspend; brand-new interface; built-in integration with Twitter, identi.ca, Facebook and other social networks with the MeMenu in the panel; the likewise-open package, which provides Active Directory authentication and server support for Linux, has been updated to version 5.4; new default open-source driver for NVIDIA hardware; improved support for NVIDIA proprietary graphics drivers".

Ubuntu :: Easy Way To Update Firefox?

Jun 25, 2010

I've never quite understood why they won't like Firefox just update on it's own. Instead it appears all of the FF updates always have to come through the update manager. 3.6.4 has been out since Tuesday and while I can go to the FF website and grab the tar of the new version I'd rather you know just upgrade my existing version like I've already easily done in Windows.

Seriously if this was a security flaw update and we had to wait this long you'd think people would be up in arms. Luckly 3.6.4 is mainly just extra functionality.

Still am I just left at the mercy of whenever it appears in the update stream or is there an easy way to update what I already have installed verses having two versions of FF?

Software :: Really Easy To Use Mp3 Stream Recorder?

Jul 5, 2010

There is an mp3 music stream I listen to, and I'd like to record some of it to a file. The stream plays just fine with VLC, but when I try to use the VLC menu dialogs to stream it into a file, it never works: VLC just plays the stream, instead of creating a file, and no helpful info is dumped to the terminal. I'm not in the mood to spend two or three hours figuring out the correct VLC command-line switches (I've done /plenty/ of that in the past) and so I was hoping there was some program that could do the same thing with two or three mouse clicks.
