I have a remote drive mounted on my system(ubuntu 10.04 x64), and i have the contents of that drive backed up to dropbox. the problem is, if i unmount the drive, the files disappear from dropbox. is there a way to mirror the contents of the network drive to a localfolder(preferably in such a way that all changes and file deletions are changed on the local folder instantly, but unmounting doesn't delete it all)? It looks like rsync would work, but im not sure how to make it work.

I need to write a shell script which can ready content of the folder and place files on remote FTP server. I need to make sure that a file that is already placed on remote FTP server is not attempted second time. The file names will be something like Records-2011-05-09. The files will be generated by MySQL every hour.

When I position icons on the desktop in specific places, then I choose to move a file or folder into another folder, all the icons arrange back to the left side. This happened in an earlier version of KDE 4.x, disappeared the next version, and reappeared. how to keep this from happening. It makes using the desktop a pain in the you know what.

I was dragging and dropping content from a folder onto the user desktop folder when suddenly instead of the packed Desktop Folder I got the Home folder with the few normal files that were in it AND one file called Desktop.
(actually, the file name was "Escritorio" and it was a PDF file, and in $HOME/.config/ the file user-dirs.dirs was changed to say XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/" instead of XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Escritorio")
I've searched around but only found how to recreate a folder calles "Desktop" (or "Escritorio") and have it act like such, but not how to eventually recover the original "Desktop" folder AND ALL ITS CONTENTS (quite a lot!)
Is there any way to get the content back?

Its difficult to explain, but when I installed OpenSuse 11.3 64 bit with KDE there was a small folder/box in the upper left corner of the screen. It contained shortcuts to SuSe Help, Open Office, Firefox, My Computer and a few more. I fidgeted with my desktop activity settings and it disappeared. How do I get it back?

I just installed Linux for the first time and then stupidly changed the command of the computer in the computer properties. now I can't get access to the computer directory and I need the computer's command again. I recall it started with Nautilus and I can't remember the following letters/numbers.
what to write under the computer properties so I can get back access to the computer folder?

My university allows me to connect remotely to my storage space. In Windows, I can use: Code: \name.of.server.ca and after I type my userID and password I can map the folder to a drive letter (say, X:) In Fedora, I can connect remotely with Connect to Server using sftp/ssh (although I've not been able to store the userID and password temporarily). What I'd like is to mount or map the remote folder in a way that would allow me to access it from applications (for example, to call a files on the server from within LaTeX ).

It then places the folder on the desktop. However if I use any application that works with the file system, I can never see that folder. I know the physical location of the SSH folder can be traced into Home folder -> .gvfs (it is a hidden folder). However I want the SSH folder to be easily accessible on the file system. Something very similar to "Expand Drive" or "SFTP drive" in windows.

I have to access to a remote hard drive on a windows machine with admin privileges (something like \ipaddressc$). I was able to bookmark that and put the link on "Places" using "Connect to Server..." using the following parameters: windows share, ip address, d$, username & pass. Now to make it easier to access, i want to put the same thing on the panel, and there comes the problem. I think that i can make a link that executes by command line the previous settings and opens-mount all the times my remote path.

I subscribe to DropBox and save all my important data in my /home/DropBox folder which, I presume, is living on my /home partition (/dev/sda3). I was hoping that I could create a new partition (/dev/sda4), 'move' my DropBox folder to this new partition so that when I use Clonezilla to make my back up images (/dev/sda1 & /dev/sda3) it would take much less time and space.

I have a low powered headless box (DLINK DNS323) running linux that I keep in a back room at home to handle large file downloads. It does not have X installed. Everything is handled at the command prompt through an SSH link. In the most common case, I log in from a remote location (perhaps a coffee shop), start the download, then disconnect and go about my business.
If I try to download from a free account of rapidshare, filesonic, or some another file service there is a manual handshake process (decode a captcha, wait for 60 seconds, etc) that requires a graphical client to complete.
I would like to somehow navigate through the handshake using my laptop (running Firefox) (perhaps through a proxy on the DNS323), but direct the download directly to the DNS323 (i.e., not routed through the laptop) so that I can disconnect and expect that the download will complete without further involvement from me or my laptop.
Is there anyway to direct a download to a remote path? Any other suggestions for solving the problem?
