Ubuntu Networking :: Accessing Folder Within Windows Share

Feb 15, 2011

I'm trying to figure out a good way to access a folder within a Windows share from an Ubuntu 10.04 computer. I work at a school which uses a Windows network. Each class has one login and a folder for their work. All the folders are in one Windows share called //fses/class$. Each class does not have access to //fses/class$ (otherwise a student from one class would be able to access another class's folder) - they only have access to their own folder e.g. //fses/class$/3b.

When I try to access a class's folder from an Ubuntu computer I get an error that //fses/class$ cannot be accessed. I've got around it for the moment by using a teacher's credentials, but that's not ideal because then the students have access to other classes' work. I also tried using the 'mount' command e.g.
sudo mount -t smbfs -o username=3b,password=**** //fses/class$/3b /media/3b

This did work (although I know it'd be better to use cifs and a credentials file), but only a 'superuser' can do it, and it mounts the folder for all users. I could also give the students superuser permission for the mount command, but this seems like giving them more permission than should really be necessary. Is there any way for a user who is not a superuser to access the folder? I'd like to use something like this.
nautilus username=3b,password=**** smb://fses/class$/3b

Fedora Servers :: Mounting A Remote Folder

Nov 13, 2009

My university allows me to connect remotely to my storage space. In Windows, I can use: Code: \name.of.server.ca and after I type my userID and password I can map the folder to a drive letter (say, X:) In Fedora, I can connect remotely with Connect to Server using sftp/ssh (although I've not been able to store the userID and password temporarily). What I'd like is to mount or map the remote folder in a way that would allow me to access it from applications (for example, to call a files on the server from within LaTeX ).

Ubuntu Servers :: Add A Printer On Remote Windows Machine?

I set up a print server with a USB printer attached. I can remotely bring up CUPS and print a test page, but I would like to be able to add a printer in windows like I normally would. Add printer, network work printer and so on, but I am not sure how to implement this on Ubuntu server. Do I need to use IPP or do I have to share it out using Samba? Oh, my server does not have a graphical desktop, it is strictly console based.

Ubuntu Servers :: Remote Desktop To Manage File Downloads From Windows 7 Machine(s) Big List?

Feb 17, 2010

I've got an old p3 with 11 ide hard drives strapped to it for storage and I decided to throw Ubuntu server on it because it's more lightweight than a standard ubuntu install, and given it's a pentium 3 with 128mb of ram, lightweight is good. I installed, through putty (ssh), the gnome gui - then learned that putty only does cli (i was thrilled), so I've spend the last hour trying to figure out how to enable remote desktop.

I don't mind reinstalling to do what is necessary. remote desktop to manage file downloads from my windows 7 machine(s) big list, i know. history: this thing is/was my media server. I had xp on it, sharing all drives and watching hd movies off it, but then xp decided it did't want to boot anymore so here we are. I'm thinking of just putting ubuntu 8.04/8.10 on it and through its wonderful gui enabling remote desktop and using realvnc/tightvnc to access it

Ubuntu Security :: Hacker Accessing Remote Desk?

Aug 21, 2010

I had remote desk running on a machine and I went downstairs the other day, turned it on, and someone was controlling the machine. Of course that's partially my fault since there was -zero- rd password set. However, my question is how did this person figure out my IP and get past the router to the machine? I don't have any forwarding setup. My router admin password is (has always been) strong. I guess my question now is: Is there anyway to restrict rd access to the local network?

Networking :: Accessing A Remote Server Using Ssh Or Sftp

Apr 30, 2010

I cannot access a remote server(Ubuntu) using ssh or even using sftp from my ftp client. I've been accessing this server regularly for many months with no problem until now. There is a web server running and that's OK, so no problems there. I asked the owner of the server if he could access using ssh from within his LAN, which he could! So openssl is working from within the LAN, but not ouside of the LAN. I access the remote server by using one of [URL] free domain names. I'm aware that this service requires renewal or activity at least once a month and as far as I know this is up to date and working OK.

Is this a router gateway problem? I suspect that port 22 has been blocked, but what could block this port? It's been working well for so many months. As far as I can tell the owner of the server/LAN has not been tampering with the router, so what could be blocking port22? I'm currently accessing the server using vnc4server.

Another really weird thing is that when I access the terminal on the remote server via vnc4server and I ssh back to the server using one of [URL] free domain names, it works! So as I understand ssh is accessing itself by going out of the LAN and back to itself. This would suggest that port22 on the gateway router is working. But when I try to ssh from a pc outside of the LAN, I just get timed out!

* openssl working from within the LAN but not outside of the LAN.
* sftp not working.
* domain name from dyndns.com working and up to date.
* Web server is working OK.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Accessing Live CD Remote GUI?

Apr 10, 2010

I have been using the Centos 5.4 live CD to do volume resizing etc for root volume which can't be readily dismounted. I have also been using it to clone systems. It is a really great tool - even offering the same GUI interface I have come to know and love...One added feature which would be great for me would be to package "nx server" and/or "webmin" with it so it can be used to maintain remote and "headless" servers.

That way - when heavy duty maintenance is required on a remote system - the sysadmin (me) could ask the site owner to boot with the live cd - and do the rest remotely. Also it would make maintenance of headless servers easier.I'm not sure whether the live cd is inherited more or less complete from the upstream provider - or whether it is completely re-packaged at centos. I'm also not sure how technically difficult it is to re-package a live cd with extra services.

-it freezes when double clicking the folder in Nautilus, right clicking, selecting folder next to it then arrow over to select
-does same thing when accessed as root
-everything worked fine when booting from a live CD
-restarting Nautilus or rebooting has no affect
-when it freezes, I can not scroll, select another folder, or do anything else in Nautilus, but it does respond to clicking the close window button by displaying the force quit dialog.

Ubuntu :: Multi Users Accessing A Remote Server On Local Network

Jul 24, 2010

I would like to experiment a "green" idea of virtual desktop where multiple users are served by a single powerful machine.

I have a server running 24/7. The monitor of this machine is turned off most of the time and the OS is on the login screen.

Other users, in the same local network, use less powerful machines, which could be a thin client or an old Pentium 3 machine. They access their accounts remotely and work with the GUI as if they were sitting in front of the server. Each user sees their own desktop (different themes, screen resolution, etc.). And of course it can happen that several users could log in at the same time.

The usage is modest: mostly web browsing and the usual default applications (office, wine, gimp, etc.). In particular no games or any demanding applications. The users want to use their desktop in graphical mode only.

Question: How do we call this way of using a server? Is it possible with Ubuntu? And how to implement it?

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba - Access Folder To Delete Or Restore From The Recycle Bin Folder

Apr 24, 2010

I'm using ubuntu server 9.10 for a home build NAS. Everything is working great just have one more thing to figure out. I have Samba set up to access my files and I set up a recycle feature so anything deleted will get moved to a Recycled folder. (I learned this the hard way after hitting delete key by accident while browsing the shares in windows. Lost 100 GB of data)

Now it is for the most part working but the permissions on folders isn't getting set right. If I delete a file in a share I can go to Recycle bin folder and delete the file for good. But if I delete a folder I can not access that folder to delete or restore from the Recycle bin folder. I have to chmod the folder before I can do anything with it. Anything I can change to get folders deleted via windows to have the right permissions when it is moved to the Recycle bin folder?
