May 27, 2011
I have an usb stick with syslinux (and slitaz, tinycorelinux, magicparted, memtest, hdt.. on it).I use this usb on german, french or uk keyboards for booting different PCs.So, how to setup a menu in syslinux.cfg for changing the keyboard at boot time?
I found such menu extracts in internet:
label fr
menu label fr azerty keyboard (fr)
kernel kbdmap.c32
append maps/fr.ktl
code....

I have a Dell XPS M2010. It came from the factory with Vista and was converted to Fedora 6 within a day of receiving it. With the release of Fedora 8 it was upgraded. With the release of Fedora 10, it was reinstalled from scratch. Now I am trying to reinstall from scratch again while moving to Fedora 13.
The install itself goes smoothly enough (personal problems with trying to hunt down a blank DVD or large enough USB stick aside). After the initial setup and copying the files to the HDD, the machine reboots and the DVD ejects as expected. After the reboot, the firstboot procedure picks up and installation continues. The third screen of firstboot is Create User. The problem is, I can't create a user. The keyboard does absolutely nothing, so I can't type my name. Since creating a user is required, I can't bypass this screen.
During the DVD-based portion of installation, the keyboard worked just fine (root password and hostname were typed with no problem). The mouse works just fine throughout the entire process. Editing the GRUB prompt to start at Runlevel 3 brings me to text-based setup. Like the GUI setup, I have no keyboard. I can't use the arrow keys to move to the Keyboard configuration menu item. None of the previous Fedora installs had this problem.

It will be quite literally bare, consisting of motherboard http://www.axiontech.com/prdt.php?item=88615, CPU, RAM, power supply only (won't even have case). I'm working as contractor at 3M and would like to reduce my baggage when I move.I will probably boot Debian on USB flash and access the machine with SSH, but my main dilemma will be how to setup the system while trying to avoid buying a keyboard and monitor. I can test the USB boot on my laptop, but I will need a way to diagnose problems. Beeping the speaker so I know the system is at a certain state would be a clumsy solution, assuming the motherboard even has a speaker.

I'm looking for info on setting up a piano type usb keyboard (also called midi controller?) in ubuntu. Any of the references I have found cite alsa, and I'm assuming they won't work with pulse. Also I'm sort of stalling on purchasing said keyboard until I feel there's a reasonable probability of it working. Here's a reference with alsa [URL].

I am using Gnome 2.32 (Ubuntu 10.10 /x64 ).
By using the supplied keyboard configuration utility I successfully set up two language layouts and they work perfectly. Since I also often work on Windows and default shortcut to switch layouts in it is Alt+Shift (and after many years I am very used to this), I tried to setup the same shortcut in Gnome. But with a Gnome I have a problem: once I press Alt+Shift - layouts switch immediately and I am unable to do Alt+Shift+<Something> shortcuts.
So my main question is:
Is it possible to teach Gnome's keyboard layout switcher to do the actual switch of layouts only if I press and release the Alt+Shift combination without touching any other keys?

I'm using Xubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, and I'm trying to setup a keyboard shortcut for xfce4-terminal. I've read a million threads and articles telling me how to do it (go to settings >> keyboard >> application shortcuts tab and click add), but when I open that interface there is no "add" button, although the interface is a table that impliesn in its appearance that things can be added to it.

I just switched to Ubuntu 10.04 and I'm looking for a way to be able to play piano with my M-audio Keystation 88es keyboard. In Windows I use the amazing Synthogy Ivory piano sounds. Is there anything similar in linux? everything up? I followed different instructions on how to setup Jack to make it work and it can see the keyboard but I wasn't able to get any sound out of it.My computer has the Asus built-in sound card and I also have a separate M-audio Audiophile 192 sound card.

I'm trying to get the special keys on my bluetooth keyboard (Dell Y-RAQ-DEL2, which came with my Dell Inspiron 530) to work under Ubuntu (10.04). Specifically things like the calculator button, volume knob etc.
I've tried various keyboard mapping in the Preferences > Keyboard menu, but the system doesn't seem to be able to "see" any of these special keys.

I know about hotkeys and setting up keyboards shortcuts. But say I had no keyboard like say a tablet.I have an s10-3t and I got compiz on it. I would like to be able to create shortcut icons for executing keyboard commands for use with compiz. All I would have to do is click the icon and it would execute. I would not have to remember all the keyboard shortcut commands I setup. I could also impress people I meet with it far easier.

I was watching a friend of mine install PHP on SuSE with YaST, and it appeared as though he was able to select the various extensions he wanted compiled into PHP for installation. I didn't know this was possible, I thought you pretty much had to take whatever extensions whoever built the package decided to include. Is it possible with CentOS to install PHP with a custom selection of extensions?

Upgraded to F14 today. After banging away on the secondary LCD monitor for about 2 hours, I finally got that working by de-installing Xfce and re-installing it, booting into gnome and running gnome-display-properties.
But "now" there is no choice for me on the GDM screen for gnome. I don't use it but I do rely on it as a 'backup' in case Xfce goes south.
I installed the Desktop Switching Tool and that doesn't do the job either. I get Xfce every time.
How can I 'rebuild' the login screen to include an option for Gnome, should I need to use it?

I've got a machine with P4 1.6GHz and 512M ram. It's a bit laggy when running ubuntu 9.10. Especially after i open up Eclipse, things start to get very slow. I'm thinking about installing Xubuntu, but am wondering if installing debian(or arch) then xfce would be equivalent to installing Xubuntu, or would it be faster when using debian(or arch)+xfce combination?
Reason why I'm thinking about this is that the Ubuntu family including Xubuntu, tendd to integrate too much stuff for ease of use, while installing system from scratch and then building up from that could avoid those unnecessary extra features. What do you guys think?

I want VLC to be the default media player in my Ubuntu 10.04 installation. However, even though I right click on a media file and select it to open with VLC and ticks the "Remember this application for ..." box, files of this type still keep opening in the "Movie Player" application. It seems the "Remember this application for ..." box has no effect what-so-ever. Anyone know what might be wrong? Some configuration file somewhere that I don't have the right to or something?

According to some info I've been given that helped solve a video flicker, I'm in need of a replacement graphics card for my new machine. can I have working flicker free video and CCSM effects? or is it a case of one or the other?

Does anyone have any other suggestions that might allow me to have desktop effects and reasonable flicker free video playback? similar in budget to the original would be good.

I have a bunch of Windows servers and they all connect to 2 networks. One of them is all public IPs (an entire /24) which is protected by a pfsense firewall. The other network is just a 48 port gigabit switch that each machine accesses using a private (192.16 static IP on a separate nic. There is no gateway/DNS/DHCP server on this private network and we want to keep it that way.
I want to deploy a ubuntu server that will connect to both networks. This server will not sit behind our firewall. It will have a public IP address from our /24 and be connected to the switch that feeds our firewall and a second nic with a static private IP that will be connected to our private network. This server will need to run nagios, run a few command line items that grep log files and serve the output via apache, and act as a VPN to allow an outside machine secure access to the private network. Sitting on this private network are various web based GUIs for the switches, UPS boxes, etc that we do not want exposed directly to the Internet. Both of these networks are mission critical so I can't change any existing settings and I can't add anything to the existing firewall. There would only be a couple of VPN connections at a time.
Do you think that ubuntu 10.04 LTS server (32 bit) would be able to handle this? I am looking at running it on a supermicro Atom D525 box with 3G of ram and a small SSD for storage.

just wondering what others are using to find and find and download new music. I'm also curious to know of other alternatives to Nicotine+, which I've been using for a little while. I've recently found a nice little widget called Seesu, which is great so far. It lets you search up bands and listen to their songs, and you can download the .mp3 for free afterwards if you like it. Anyway, enough of my pseudo-advertising.
What do you all do to find new music? Are torrent clients like Vuze the way to go, or is software like Nicotine+ better suited for the job? Perhaps you prefer the way of sites like Bandcamp, or by downloading from various online music stores. In any event, it'd be interesting to see how you all go about building onto your playlists.

right after updating suse 11.2 via wlan to 11.3 i could not connect to my WPA2 secured Wlan anymore. looking in dmesg i found:
Code:
wlan0: deauthenticating from 00:24:01:e7:94:75 by local choice (reason=3) i found a lot of bugs messages relating to this, including the "fix" removing the network manger. i did remove it, but it did not help. i also removed wpa2 and tried with no encryption, but that showed more errors. so i tried 11.1 live-cd and it worked flawlessly. then i tried kernel 2.6.35-rc3-6-pae from the factory repo. then, i got sick of reading without finding a bugfix and i edited the kernel source myself (no, not dangerous, and yes i knew what i was doing). i commented out line 2963 to 2966 in rivers/net/wireless/hostap/hostap_ioctl.c . well, that worked for the deauthenticating issue, but now i have 40% to 60% package loss in my wlan. again i tried my 11.1 live-cd and it still worked. then i compiled kernel 2.6.37 vanilla from kernel.org, but that, too,

When I first installed the Opensuse 11.4, restart my computer and get into the boot menu, I found that the OpenSUSE boot item was at the top while Windows Xp was at the bottom. It may cause problem when my parents are going to use the computer (they only know XP). How to set the Windows XP as the first item and the default choice?

I have been looking at the options and Clonezilla seems to be recommended often. Are there other choices that are easer or better? My real goal is to make a bootable DVD that will restore my system back to the point it was cloned.

I tried searching forums before posting, but it was hard to search due to the specific nature of what I want to do.
I have one hard drive with windows XP on it. Another with Ubuntu. As it stands there is no link between them. Is it possible to create a dual boot using these disks? - I do not want to reinstall any of them.
Preferably, I would like the boot choice (or booter? - not really sure what I'm talking about) to be on the newer Ubuntu drive.
It is on an old machine with 256MB Ram. So slow in fact, I'm going to change the desktop environment to Xubuntu - but that's mostly irrelevant.
As I understand it, I should make the Ubuntu drive master, XP as slave... but then what?

This morning I had 10 updates for my system including a new kernel 2.6.28-19 During install I was asked a question as to which menu.lst to use. I was completely confused as there was no documentation explaining the choices, so I took the default, keep my current menu.list. I did that because I have a modification to my menu.lst having added acpi-noirq I was afraid I would loose that and not be able to boot. Anyhow I ended up with my same menu.lst without the new kernel. So it booted the old kernel 2.6.28-18.Where is some documentation to give one some idea of which of the about 8 choices to make? I can't be the first with this problem. I have another computer to undate that has a different mod to menu list.I would like to know the correct way to choose the proper choice. If I don't get an answer I will try to document in more detail the choices.
I got around the problem by editing menu.list and copying the entries for 2.6.28-18 and changing them to 2.6.28-19 Many folks might not even realise they were running on the old kernel.
