Software :: Pulseaudio Default Devices Overidden?

I shall try and keep it short. Under Sys->Prefs->Sound I have selected pulseaudio server for input and output. Under Pulse-Audio manager->devices I can see the motherboard, a usb webcam, and my new soundcard. I edited the ~/.pulse source and sink files to match the new soundcard (alsa_output.pcixxxx_alsa_playback_0 and so on) under PulseAudio manager_> modiles the id numbers match the right info in the /proc/asound/cardX/pcmi0/info files
Under pulseaudio volume I set the default input and output to be the new soundcard. But in pulseaudio volume control I can see the USB webcam is still the input, and any sound still gets output to the motherboard. Is something overriding pulseaudio, or have I missed something. (The motherboard mic socket is broke, and the USB mike isn't good enough so I really need to get the soundblaster Audigy SE up and going)

i am having a problem with skype that i wasn't having before, and afaik skype hasn't been upgraded recently, so something else presumably has changed.
because of driver issues i have to use an external usb audio interface to do voip. this interface is not connected to the pulseaudio server. i am able to connect it to jackd and it works fine for both audio in and out. however it no longer shows up in the list of sound devices available to skype. this used not to be the case. i have tried stopping and restarting skype, as well as unplugging and reattaching the interface. the interface does not show up in pulseaudio manager in the lists of devices.

I have an Intel HDA audio card, and would like to record both my soundcard output and my microphone input at the same time. Getting to record my soundcard output (aka "Stereo Mix" or "What-U-Hear") is impossible for my soundcard without using the PulseAudio monitor, so I've set that up. Now I can record either the PulseAudio monitor for my soundcard, or the microphone input, but I don't know how to record both at the same time.
Currently, my .asoundrc looks like this:

So now I can choose either "pulse" as an input channel in, for example, Audacity or RecordMyDesktop applications (and then set in the PA volume control the actual channel which I want recorded), or choose "pulse_monitor" or "pulse_mic", in order to record either the PA monitor or the microphone, respectively.
I've read through the ALSA plugins reference, as well as the Asym and Dmix pages on ALSA wiki, but I'm still not sure how to put this together. I figured there should be a way either to route the microphone input into the ALSA output, and thus make the PA monitor "hear" what I speak into the microphone, or to make a completely new channel with both ALSA output and microphone input as "slaves", and then use that for recording.

Due to the fact that with pulseaudio it is impossible to change the microphone/speaker/ring devices in skype, I had to remove pulseaudio.
After that I can choose a device in skype, but the mixer does not work anymore. There is a way to have a working mixer without pulseaudio package or a way to choose audio devices in skype with pulseaudio installed?!

Is it possible to output one playback stream to multiple devices simultaneously with the current PulseAudio / Phonon setup? The PulseAudio mixer only has radio buttons to choose one device per playback stream. I believe the hardware is capable of this, since I remember doing that before we had PulseAudio. How can I duplicate an audio stream?
Here's one application scenario: I am travelling with my family, all crammed in small hotel room. My wife and me want to watch a movie on my laptop without waking up our kids. I just happen to have one analogue headphone available and one wireless USB headset with me. (Of course, the low tech solution is to bring an 3,5mm Y-cable to attach two analogue headsets, but I would really love to use the USB headset together with the analogue one.)
Another similar thing that bugs me is that my laptop's built-in speakers now always seem dead when an analogue headphone is plugged in. This is mostly what one wants, and before PulseAudio, one had to manually switch them off which was generally annoying. However, the downside is for example with notifications.
For example, before PulseAudio, I could configure Skype to always ring over the laptop's built-in speakers, regardless of whether the analogue headphones were plugged in. This is no longer possible, since PulseAudio does not distinguish between built-in speakers and built-in analogue port any more, while old Alsa did. So in my office, where some analogue headphones are plugged into the docking station, I never hear Skype ringing if I don't wear the headphones.

I have a problem on a fresh install of Jessie with KDE. I have three soundcards. In Wheezy I used pavucontrol once for each application to change the sink from the internal to the external soundcard, and that setting would stick each time I rebooted the system (audio would go on the external soundcard). Now each time I reboot the audio gets routed to the internal soundcard and I have to use pavucontrol each time to route the audio back to the external one. URL...
putting this line in /etc/pulse/default.pa
set-default-sink alsa_output.usb-E-MU_Systems__Inc._E-MU_0404___USB_E-MU-0E-3F04-07D80A14-027A8-STATION_01-00-USB.analog-stereo
as well as this one, and issuing:
pacmd set-default-sink alsa_output.usb-E-MU_Systems__Inc._E-MU_0404___USB_E-MU-0E-3F04-07D80A14-027A8-STATION_01-00-USB.analog-stereo
and none of them has worked. I don't know if it's a related issue, but the settings I choose in the for Phonon in the KDE multimedia settings don't stick either. I select the external soundcard as default device and upon reboot the internal one is on top on the preferences list.

Based on my experience with external devices such as USB microphones and USB speakers, PulseAudio always defaults to the motherboard/built-in device rather than any USB device.My expectation is that if someone is using an external USB device to supplement what is on the motherboard/built-in, they are going to be doing that to overcome a limitation of the motherboard/built-in devices, and therefore it is logical that when external USB devices are present on a system, these be the default. (For example, I want sound from my beefy set of Logitech USB speakers and not from the tinny notebook speakers).
It is no problem for me to manually set/reset the active device, however I believe that the average user expects to plug in a USB microphone or speakers and assume that the system will automatically change the default. Furthermore without this action, some users not used to the Linux audio settings will be led to believe that the USB devices are not supported, when in fact it is simply a problem that they have not been selected for use rather than the motherboard/built-in devices.I think this warrants me entering a bug report, but I wanted to hear what others think before proceeding to enter a bug report.Is the default behavior of PulseAudio towards USB devices wrong? What do you think?

I would like to use HDMI on my graphic card for audio output. ALSA shows it as a card with 4 devices and I can get sound through one of them (the other three are different channels, perhaps? I have only stereo output connected). Although Pulseaudio has the right card set as default, it seems to me that it plays on a wrong device. Pacmd shows that the sink has parameter alsa.device set to the first device listed by ALSA, but I can get sound only from the second one.How can I force Pulseaudio to use another device of the same card as a default output?

I've had nothing but trouble with Pulseaudio in Fedora 14. I had managed to get rid of it in Fedora 10 with the command: su -c "yum remove alsa-plugins-pulseaudio pulseaudio" I just don't want to have to deal with Pulseaudio anymore. It does not like my sound card and gets in the way. Is there a Linux distribution that does not use Pulseaudio ?

The default output audio port Ubuntu doesn't work on my system. It should be "Analog Mono Output/Amplifier", instead of "Analog Output/Amplifier". I can easily change that in sound preferences, just by choosing the right port in the "Output" tab, or by issuing the following command:

I just installed skype 2.1 beta 2 (the deb file) from the skype website, but the only option I see under Sound Devices -> Recording is "PulseAudio Server (local)" This doesn't work for me, as the skype test calls don't actually record anything I say. I use skype a lot and FINALLY got it working under karmic, but I needed to upgrade to lucid and now it's broken.
When I open Sound preferences and look at the Applications section, Skype shows up as recording when I run its test call... but no sound is recorded? How is it possible that my sound card picks up something recording but doesn't actually record it when I'm in skype?

I recently installed a new sound card, and I need to find out how to change the default device. Currently, I'm dual-booting Windows, and I had re-enabled the on-board audio in the PC's bios. After doing that, Debian started detecting that on-board as the default sound device. Is there a way to set my sound card to be used instead? I found out that the 'alsaconf' utility has been phased out. I"m currently running Debian testing, for amd64.

I want to change the default mount options for removable devices, especially vfat devices, to have shortname=lower instead of the default shortname=mixed mount option. I googled around, and found references to /system/storage/default_options/vfat/mount_options gnome configuration option, but I don't seem to have this option set, actually, I don't seem to have a /system/storage tree in gconf-editor at all. searching in gconf-editor doesn't really yield any results.

I'm working on a server and noticed that the to RAID5 setup is showing 4 Raid devices but only 3 Total devices. It's on a fully updated CentOS 5 system that only has three SATA drives, as it can not hold anymore. I've done some researching but am unable to remove the fourth device, which is listed as removed. The full output of `mdadm -D /dev/md2` can be see below. I've never run into this situation before.Anyone have any pointers on how I can reduced the Raid Devices from 4 to 3? I have tried
mdadm /dev/md2 -r failed
mdadm /dev/md2 -r detached
but neither work and since there is no block device listed I'm not quite sure how to get things back in sync so it's only seeing the three drives.

I have already had Vista installed on another drive and from what i've read on the webs you get to dualboot if you install ubuntu after vista. when i did install it (i installed on a blank hdd with no partitions, choosing the "erase entire disk" option since for some reason default option was attempting to eat a part of my windows 1 gb drive instead of using disk i specially made for it) and the grub 2 loaded for the first time, there was NO option to run vista. only 2 linux (normal and recovery) and 2 memtests. I've ran linux and went to google this. I found that i should add something to some config files in /etc/grub.d/From reading the readme file i understood i could add my own files that are named like NUMBER_SOMENAME and insert code into them. I changed the default player for mp3 to audacious, which works fine, just that every time I doubleclick a mp3 file, a second application button appears in my taskbar saying "opening [file]" which looks like the default player. this program will eventually time out and go away, but it's still annoying - any idea on how I would go about fixing this?

I was using ubuntu 10.04 till yesterday.. and due to hdd crash i have changed my hdd.
while looking for my installation disc, my wall-mate gives me this Ubuntu Studio dvd and instead of downloading a new one, i have installed the studio. at the first sight ... i am being a fond of studio version .. its really cool.
now, i am quite habituated with default appearance of ubuntu, i found studio appearance is quite unusual (for me, menu layouts, panel everything).
I would like to know how do i change this default appearance like ubuntu default 10.04 appearance. I am attaching a screen-shoot of my friends desktop, he upgraded his ubuntu thru apptitude update.

I am running F12 on a lenovo X61. 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) If my machine is quiet for a while, then suddenly needs to make a noise (eg some sort of notification event), the audio "pops" when the first sound is made. It sounds like the noise you hear in the speakers when the audio cable is connected to a live jack while the speakers are on. A static POP.
Once that initial pop is over, the audio sounds exactly like I expect it to.Then, if there is no sound for a period of about 10 seconds, I can hear the audio pop again. If I then play a sound, I will hear the initial static pop again.It's as if pulseaudio is powering up my audio system when it needs it, then powers it down when it doesn't need it any more.And, in fact, I found that something is going in in the kernel. If I look at lsmod, I can see things changing.I did an lsmod with the sound "on", then waited for it to pop off, then did it again and noticed these diffs:

after struggling for a couple days with Pulse not working in Natty, I found a solution, and it's easy: Delete the ~/.pulse folder in your home folder. I keep a separate home partition, and apparently some of the old settings conflicted with the new setup.

I've decided to give PulseAudio a try and since it is working almost without any problems; the only problem I haven't been able to solve (even after some searching through the Internet) is this one:At the moment I've got only 1 mixer channel for output, called Internal Audio Analog Stereo. Regarding ALSA and PulseAudio - Explanation on how these two interact. After installing Debian I realised that my sound control (Volume Control: HDA Intel ALSA mixer) was different from what I had with Ubuntu where it would display a window called "Sound properties" in which allowed me to control the sound of each program running - I believe this is the PulseAudio aspect. (If I'm wrong at this point please correct me)
Now I have managed to get PulseAudio setup correctly for me (not as easily as Ubuntu but I moved to Debian to learn, not be spoon fed), however the way in which I did it may of been wrong - pretty much just went to synaptic and installed everything with PulseAudio in its name
Currently the sound icon in my top Gnome panel (within the notification area applet) has the ALSA mixer, sometimes when I log on it has the PulseAudio one (Sound preferences window), I don't really mind which one is loaded thanks to the PulseAudio Volume Control program (under Sound & Video). Is there a way though to stick with just one?
