Software :: Page Numbering In LaTeX?

I am working on a literature project, and my school rules say to put the abstract in twice, both in Norwegian and English.
I have gotten LaTeX to accept this, but the page numbering is not good. it seems that I get this order (page numbers in ()
titlepage
Norwegian abstract(I)
blank page (II)
English abstract(I)
[Code].....
will I have to manually set the counter for each part of the preface to get a continuous count? Using report class

When using the pr command for formatting simple text files for printing, page numbers are included in the header by default. I figured out how to remove the date from the header (pr -D ""), and how to remove the title (pr -h ""), but for the life of me I can't figure out how to remove page numbering from the header. Anybody know how/if this can be accomplished?

I am a semi-noob on this and I have problems getting my emacs recognizing .tex as latex and even running latex-mode. Usually when you run latex-mode (M-x : latex-mode) emacs should switch to latex-mode, but nothing happens in my case. The menu bar still show the TeX options, highlighting remains the same etc.
I am running emacs 23.1.1 (x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.10.4), this is on a university system so I don't know much about it.

I want to enable line numbering in emacs - as is vi, which we use exclusively at work (my boss removed emacs from all the machines in the department.)
In vi you just use :set nu - the is a site that explains that this is possible [URL]
It describes a linenum.el - and I can see the program, but don't understand how to install it.

I used this command to merge a book I downloaded by chapters into a single file (I'm putting it here so I don't forget : )

As you know, many (or most?) books number the first pages using roman numbers, so in the pdf the page #1 is actually the logical page #12.
Also, the combined file doesn't have a logical index (section, subsection, etc.) showing in okular or evince.
Since I have many pdfs in similar condition I was wondering if there's a way to change the numbering to make the first "n" pages use logical roman numbers and add a logical index.

I have a .doc file. The Table on Contents has Roman Numerals as well as the footing. The Table of Contents is linked to the pages and headings. How do I change these to a different numbering system: 1,2,3,? The format is A4 and I want to convert it to letter. Can I do this and keep the links in the TOC to the pages and headings?

I'm having trouble getting a system to boot. Specifically, I think the MBR is trashed and I don't know how to repair it. I'm scared to experiment The system has a PATA DVD drive, a SATA drive via a motherboard connector and two 3ware RAID controllers. I can boot systems from the DVD drive but when I try to boot from the hard drive grub says Error 2 (which is a stage 1.5 error, I think).
The m/b SATA drive has both a 10.3 and an 11.1 system installed, on partions 2 and 3 respectively. Partition 1 is a swap partition. The RAID arrays are whole-disk LVM systems containing data. I want to run the 10.3 system. The BIOS is set to boot from the DVD then the m/b SATA, and NOT to boot from the RAIDs. Two issues worry me: grub's disk numbering and grub version dependency. If I boot into the rescue system on the 10.3 install DVD it shows the partitioned disk as /dev/sda. If I boot into the rescue system on the 11.1 install DVD it shows the partitioned disk as /dev/sdc. I suppose that means something in the kernel changed?
If I run grub in the 11.1 rescue system, I can say "find /boot/grub/menu.lst" and it reports two files on (hd2,1) and (hd2,2). If I run grub in the 10.3 rescue system it says error 15 file not found.I'm scared to use 11.1 grub to setup hd2 because when I've tried previously I've managed to overwrite the LVM metadata on one of the RAID arrays. Is there some way I might get the find command in the 10.3 grub to work? Or is there some way to test what the 11.1 grub will do that is non-destructive.

On FC11 64 bit with Adobe flash plugin for Linux installed, I see segfault errors from "npviewer" in /var/log/messages. The only browser I have tried yet, Firefox, has glitches every now and then. Sometimes it shows the title of a page in a tab, but the page is blank. This can even happen when I try the Google main page. Is it true that npviewer has something to do with Adobe flash? Is there a way to fix the problem? If it is caused by Adobe flash, is there a different plugin that will replace Adobe flash player?

i am able to try ubuntu and everything works fine until i try to install. the menu comes up to the first page where it tells you to plug in your machine and make sure there is enough disk space and network connectivity. when i hit next on this page the mouse icon changes but the next page never loads. the longest i let it hang there was 2 hours. ive tried multiple times with the same result.
im running from a flash drive on an ASUS Eee PC 1001P-PU17

I have a problem printing to my HP printer.
What is my problem? I have a page (one page - text an graphic) to print. When I sent it to my printer it prints OK. When I sent it agian, the output is totally garbled. When I sent it again (a third time) it is OK. Sent it again (4th time) it is garbled. Sent it again ... you get the picture ;-). Alternating good and bad pages.
What is my setup? I run Fedora 14 with Cups 1.4.6. The printer is a HP Deskjet 940C. It is connected to a linksys wireless print server. It is configured in CUPS to use ipp printing. The driver I use in Cups is 'CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.6 Simplified (color, 2-sided printing)'.

I have apache httpd server on my Fedora 10I got 2 problems:First : I copied the web page files to its Document Root <var/www/html> & Disabled the default web page. But when I visit http:/localhost ，it shows up the list of files in <var/www/html> as if a ftp server browsed in web page. So how can I set http://localhost load my default web page index.html ?Second :I want to set up a web server on Internet through my router . I applied for DDNS account & input it into router correctly . I set virtual host in server to redirect any access from port 80 to 192.168.1.2:80 in LAN . Just for in case , I also download and running the DDNS software & installed it on PC 192.168.1.2 in LAN . My DDNS provider is oray.cn . It's a Chinese server provider . I don't think there is anything wrong with oray.cn . But if you need its information just visit oray.cn (Google can translate it for you). So I want to know did I miss something to set up a web server in this kind of situation

I want to combine 4 ps(or pdf) page to single page and for this i have try a2ps command as:
a2ps -4 1.ps 2.ps 3.ps 4.ps -o outfile.ps
Event through it divide the page into four section. But only give one output of my four input. other three section is blank. Is i am doing some wrong or Is their any other command to do so.

I'm trying to install a .sty, .cls, and a .bst (bibtex) file for latex. I'm currently using texlive in Ubuntu 10.10. I have the general idea of where to install these but whenever I try to compile the .tex I get an error that says permission is denied to the .cls file, so I'm not sure what's going on.
I've ran the mktexlsr and everything else, but I still get this problem. If I run sudo pdflatex <filename> I wind up compiling a pdf document that I can't access. Not sure if I have to add permissions to the .sty and .cls files after they've been copied.
Additionally, the .sty and .cls files I'm using aren't in the official texlive distribution so I would definitely need to install them myself.

I have a Canoscan LiDE 30 scanner which works fine in Linux. I haven't used it in months, and never since moving from Jaunty x86_64 to Fedora 11 x86_64. This evening I suddenly need to scan two pages to send to someone via e-mail, and the recipient is desperate to receive them. Naturally, Xsane has decided this is the moment to screw me.
The problem: I cannot figure out how to tell Xsane that the page size is 8.5 11. It insists on scanning only the left side, 3.99 x 11. I cannot find a page size anywhere in any of the buttons.
In Preview I once got it to scan the entire page, but could not figure out how to save the image to file. Subsequently I have not been able to figure out how I did it. In any event, scanning from the small main window always scans 3.99 x 11. Adjusting the scan area manually in the Preview window allows me to change the size area in the small main window to 8.5 x 11, but when I then scan from the small main window it reverts to 3.99 x 11.
I have scanned the document a hundred times at least, each time trying different buttons, but nothing has succeeded in getting the full page.

Today I discovered a strange issue regarding LaTeX. I am currently working on my thesis and sometimes edit it on my laptop with F13 x86_64, and others with my office's Mac (Leopard). Fedora has TexLive installed (default Latex distribution) and I believe the Mac has its default distribution as well.
The problem is that the Mac seems to compile the document better (Latex + Bibtex + Latex + dvips + ps2pdf): page distribution looks better for one thing, space is better used. I notice that images (EPS) are rendered with an extra blank space on the bottom when compiling in Linux (which might be responsible for the page's arrangement).
Is there something I can do to fix this? Some option that perhaps the Mac has as a default but must be specified in Linux?
