Ubuntu Servers :: Install The GeoIP Plugin For AWStats?
Apr 4, 2010I'm trying to install the GeoIP plugin for AWStats. I've installed the packages geoip-database, libgeoip1, and libgeo-ip-perl. geoip-database installs the database file at /usr/share/GeoIP/GeoIP.dat, so that's the path I'm using in my AWStats config file. When I try to run AWStats on my logs, it hangs without generating any files. No debug messages about this are printed when I enable them. I've also tried installing libgeo-ipfree-perl and uncommenting the geoipfree line in my conf file, but that didn't work either.
Possibly useful detail: I previously tried installing the GeoIP C library and Perl module manually, which didn't work, and then I tried installing the Pure Perl module manually, which also didn't work. I simply deleted them all, which I'm not sure was a good idea. I don't know anything about this stuff.

Mar 9, 2010I was wondering how I can get this done. I reinstalled my awstats and deleted my awstats data. How do I pull the data from my original access_log which is around 270MB in size.
Any suggestion? I tried updating awstats but it's timing out and I'm getting an internal server error which I assume is from the 270MB access_log size.

Feb 23, 2010I have a strange issue. The only time I have trouble with yum is when awstats is included in an update. When it is, it always hangs on it when it gets to it. Yum will not complete. I have to cancel out... kill the yum pid and do it again. Tonight I did a yum-complete-transaction to do some unfinished actions - one included the removal of an old awstats - it hung on that.

Sep 11, 2010I'm trying to set up awstats for my web server which runs ISPConfig3. Due to ISPConfig, my log-rotated files have the extension .log.gz, and the naming syntax of DATE-access.log.gz.
According to awstats documentation, I need their tool to merge the log files, however, I cannot get it to work. I always get file not found or pipe error like messages.

I took a look at permissions, log files are world-readable. Checked path's 1000 times, no typo. When I try to find out whats wrong, the problems usually begins when I try to use the * character in the LogFile variable, ..

Debian Configuration :: Awstats Access To Apache Logs?
Mar 10, 2011In a squeeze box, I installed awstats and it's working like a charm. Its cron job update the awstats database every 10 minutes (as it runs as root). But I would like to be able to update the statistics from the browser as well. So I setup everything as required and I gave "read" access to "others" to every apache log file. Now, a couple of questions came to my mind:
1. Am I compromising server's security giving "read" access to "others" to apache log files?
2. Instead of giving "read" access to "others", I could add www-data user to adm group (as apache log files are owned by root:adm and permissions are rw-r----). Is this more secure than giving "read" access to "others"? 3. If the option would be giving "read" access to "others" at the end, a log file would be owned by root:adm and its permissions be rw-r--r--. As apache rotates its log files, when Apache create a new log file, does it preserve the permissions (rw-r--r--) or create it with the default permissions (rw-r-----)?

Feb 28, 2009I just installed AWStats on a new server and can't get perl to properly work as a cgi in apache. I've done this before and got it to work, and I've tried a couple suggestions found from google with no luck. When I try to access [URL] from my browser, Apache doesn't give any errors or anything, it just outputs the perl file in plain text, which implies that it's not handling the .pl file as a perl cgi, but I just don't know why.

Apr 24, 2011I have an Acer Aspire One, Model PAV70 that had Windows 7 Starter on it. I booted Ubuntu 10.10 from a USB HDD and then formatted the Acer drive with Ubuntu. I then started installing Ubuntu on the newly formatted HDD and got an error near the end of the install. It said, "apt configuration problem, an attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the cd failed." After this happened the system locked up and I had to reboot. Now I get a black screen with a white blinking cursor. I can't get the system to recognize anything. What can I do?

Apr 26, 2010I've read a few other threads about installing tarballs and just about all of them mention running the ./configure script. BTW, I'm working on a machine without internet connection and I'm using karmic. I successfully extracted the contents of the tarball and a directory of those contents was created. I navigated into that directory and tried "sudo ./configure" as per some instructions I found on the net, but the result was "bash:./configure: no such file or directory".
I get this same error message when I try "./configure --help | less" Is "./configure" something that is meant to come as part of the OS or do I need to install that separately too!?! when I try to create a keyboard short cut for opening a terminal by using the "keyboard shortcuts" option in system > preferences the setting lists it as "disabled". Is there some way for enabling? I know how to get to a complete screen terminal by using ctrl+alt+f2 but I also want a shortcut for other terminal box which is accessible via the applications area.

May 3, 2010I've been running denyhosts on Ubuntu 8.04 servers without any problems using the how-to found hereow that I have a new Ubuntu 10.04 server running, I thought I would just install denyhosts from the Ubuntu repository not realizing that the paths and filenames of the install are different from the how-to I am used to using.I figured out what the name of the new denyhosts config file is (at least new to me) and the new location, but I'm not sure about the "allowed-hosts" config file.Does anybody know where the new path for this file is and whether the filename is still the same?

Jan 5, 2011After installation of the new hardware I activated the ATI closed source driver. There is an issue with the screens
1st screen, via DVI: I cannot change to the native screen resolution
2nd screen, via VGA: The background of any window is not drawn.
Means: I can see lots of parts of other windows after moving or closing them.
Therefore I was searching for an alternative and found the hint to uninstall the ATI driver and use the open source one. After uninstall and reboot (requested by a parallel system update), some boot messages I have no screen output anymore. Means: two black screens. These are going into sleep mode after a few seconds. How can I get a running system again? Optimal would be, that I have full support for both screens. Same happens in failsave mode.
System environment:
