Nov 18, 2010I recently installed a new ubuntu system (10.10) as media center. I am running Gnome and xbmc on it. Until here, everything perfect!
I bought one of those cheapass media center keyboards with multimediakeys. Except for one, they all work out of the box.
My problem: When i press the volume down key, gnome lowers the volume of my mediacenter. This might be good for most users, but i have a surround receiver/amplifier (Denon AVR3310) that should handle the sound.
In fact, i am looking for this: When i press the volume up/down key, instead of changing the volume of my mediacenter, gnome should execute a script i wrote. This script sends commands to my receiver (using the serial port or the network connection) to lower/raise the volume.
Small additional question: I would like to get the one button that doesn't work yet to work. I have a 'mc' (mediacenter) button on my keyboard. I would like to make this launch xbmc. When running 'xev', i don't see any output when i press the button.
General :: Change Amount And Size Of Ramdisks
Mar 8, 2011Using Linux, when I boot I automatically have 16 16MB ramdisks, however, I would like to create one really large ramdisk to test some software.I found that I can adjust the size of the ramdisks already on the system with the kernel boot parameter ramdisk_size however, this makes all 16 ramdisks (/dev/ram0 - /dev/ram15) the size that is specified. So if I want to create a 1GB ramdisk, I would need 16GB of memory.Basically, I want to create one 10GB ramdisk which would be /dev/ram0. How would I go about doing that? I assume there is a kernel boot parameter, but I just haven't found it.

Sep 25, 2010I wanted to map my PSone gamepad to do some basic KDE/keyboard/mouse functions and everything works well except one thing. I use logitech ultra-x keyboard which has a few multimedia buttons (play, home, volumeup, volumedown..) and I wanted to map volumeup and volumedown keys to my pad with everything else.
volumedown works well, but volumeup makes some trouble. after I start qjoypad and map it - it does work but after mapping it I still see the "[NO KEY]" (while it is doing its job - volumeup; that's strange).. after I turn qjoypad off and on I get this error: "Error reading button 6" and after that "Error reading definition for joystick 0"

And it comes and goes with the cpu usage. cpu1 will run at like 9 or 10 percent idle while cpu2 will run at 100 percent all the time. I am not sure whats going on. But id hate to have to start from scratch again begins I just got it set up the way i want it. And the network activity keeps having spikes when I am not online. I've scanned with multiple port scanners and nothing seems out of the norm.

Aug 29, 2010I tried to install Portable VirtualBox using wine and even though I installed it on my /host/ folder (with 19 gb free) it downloaded some massive file on my Wubi installation (with 60 mb free) and now I am down to 3 mb left on Wubi and I can't find the massive file that it downloaded. Tried using the disk usage analyzer but nothing came up. Windows is unbootable so I can't use it.
Before this, Ubuntu would constantly decrease the amount of disk space I had free for no reason as well. It would jump from 120 mb one day to 50 mb.I moved my documents to my Windows folders but the disk space only stayed at 100 for another day or so before it went down again. apt-get auto/clean, localepurge, and deborphan are completely useless and there's something else going on behind the scenes here that I don't know about.Using Ubuntu Jaunty.
Ubuntu :: Auto Suspend After Certain Amount Of Time?
Feb 8, 2011Most nights I fall asleep watching tv or movies. I want the computer to go to sleep after I do. Under Power Management Properties I have "put computer to sleep when inactive for 1:00" yes - to " spin down hard disks" and "put display to sleep when inactive for 1:00"
I'd say 65% of the time I wake up and the computer is running, not suspended, and 45% of the time the monitor is still on. Over the past 8 months or so I have been trying different media players. I tend to have the same problem of the computer not sleeping with all of them. (Banshee, Miro, xbmc, boxee, vlc, totem, )
1. Is there a process I can look for that may be running some of the time that would hinder the suspend function?
2. Is there a simple script I can write for "suspend in 90 minutes"
3. I think I remember seeing way to do this from the CLI with pm-suspend, yeah?

I am running Ubuntu 10.4 64bit on an AMD64 2.2gh.
I have been doing my research about distros and know a bit about what is going on with Linux. Sort of transcending past newbie I think. But I want to know what is the most stable distro for the least amount of Disk errors, or how to get ubuntu not to have so many errors. Maybe install the 32bit version? I want something fast and simple where I can run gimp/inkscape/openoffice/and maybe some of the video editing packages like Kino/piviti/cinerella.

Dec 26, 2010Using KInfoCenter | Memory module it shows my 2GB of ram. Approx. 14% is used for Application Data and Disk Cache has been anywhere from 29-35%...leaving approx 1GB free. Can this 'Disk Cache" be reduced leaving more memory free or is this determined by the OS?
