View 4 Replies View RelatedI am new to Linux and decided on trying out Ubuntu. Love it so far. Running Ubuntu 64-bit 10.04 on a Toshiva Satellite L300. Network browsing worked fine to both my other machines (one running XP, the other Win7). The next day I switched the laptop on, the other two systems don't show automatically in the File Browser under Network like they used to. It now only shows a Windows Network icon which, when I click on it, gives the following error: Unable to mount location, Failed to retrieve share list from server. I can access the machines' shared folders perfectly through the terminal using smbclient.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11 and a few days later my ecryptfs filesystem began misbehaving in a weird way. In my home directory, many subdirectory names are duplicated verbatim. Here's an ls -F excerpt:

I can no longer access files in those directories (if I ls the directory, it appears empty; I can cd to it, but there's nothing inside). Not all of the directories are duplicated/damaged like this, but most are. A few non-directory files are also duplicated in this fashion, so for example:

I recently downloaded and installed and updated Debian squeeze. Its a dual-boot machine and the migration process is going to take its own time. In the interim, I want to look at the ext4 partitions through windows. I know/knew about ext2ifs fs-driver.org but somehow I'm not able to view the ext4 partitions even though they show up in Control Panel as ext2ifs drives.
If you guys know of any other softwares which can do the same work or better please lemme know. I also tried something called ext2explore but that one crashes all the time around. Lastly, does somebody know which is the best way to be in the know of Squeeze development and the milestones within it.
There is explore2fs, but it does not support ext4 filesystem.

You have program files (C:Program Files(x86), system files (C:Windows), user settings for programs or personal stuff(C:User), and some weird folder names. I was noticing that the Ubuntu ext4 filesystem is a little more complicated. Some folder names are self explanatory, but others are not. Is there a guide, or some reading material on the history of the linux filesystem and how it morphed into what is presently used in Ubuntu?

One question that I have tried to Google for a solution with no success is, how do you access ext4 from Windows? Shortly after I installed OpenSUSE, my OpenSUSE hard drive "vanished" from Windows 7. aturally, I can access all my hard drives from OpenSUSE, which does support the NTFS. I don't know if it'll help anyone, but here it is anyway, fwiw.I am running ubuntu 9.10 on an older Dell GX-270, and had formatted my partitions with ext4 file systems. I began to notice partimage wasn't backing up my ext4 file systems and I decided to downgrade to ext3 file systems.My system has one 160GB drive and one 500GB drive. I also have an external usb2 500GB drive./home is on the internal 500GB drive. To convert it, I mounted an ntfs file system on the external drive, created a container file, put a file system on it, and mounted the container as a linux file system.
The backup was done done via rsync. rsync makes things really easy. It understands uids, gids, file permissions, and all kinds of links. That's one reason I created the container file on my external drive. NTFS doesn't understand uids gids, linux file permissions, or linux style links.
I've already asked this in the mythbuntu and didn't get an answer there so I'm trying here. OK just added another 2Tb WD drive to my mdadm controled RAID5 array, and the reshape is finished:-

I am trying to move over 1 Terrabyte of files from a two terrabyte drive into my Ext4 drive where Ubuntu 11.04 is installed. The two terrabyte drive is where my winxp used to be and it's currently paritioned into three partitions. I would like to reformat into a single partition that's why I'm moving the files.
When moving the files from the 2Terrabye NTFS partition into the Ext4 partitioned drive, the best transfer rate I could get is 11 megabytes per second. When I transfer from one NTFS drive to another NTFS drive, I could get as high as 70megabytes per second in WinXP. Is there a way to speed up the speed transfer?
Otherwise, the file transfer dialogue says it would take 26 hours to move all the files!!!
Edit: both drives are internal drives connected via a sata II.

getfattr -d <some file>
gives me zero results, and as far as I know ls does not have means to access creation time.
getfattr -n ntfs_crtime /mnt/<some ntfs fs> gives me "Operation not opermitted"..?
