Software :: Enable X11 Forwarding If SSH Directly Into The System?

Mar 15, 2011

how to enable X11 forwarding if I SSH directly into the system, for example:

ssh -X server1

However, I'm trying to get X11 forwarding on a system I don't have direct access to. I need to first SSH into a server I do have access to, server2, then from there I can SSH into server1. I know about port forwarding but I'm not sure how it works with regards to forwarding X11 windows. For port forwarding server1's web page, I'd do this: ssh -L 9999:server1:80 mylogin@server2

Then opening [URL] on my computer would bring up server1's webpage. What is the equivalent SSH command for X11 forwarding so if I typed it and executed gedit for example, that program from server1 would pop up on my Desktop?

Jun 2, 2010

We have on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installed on one m/c which is connected to office network using pptp vpn.Now i want to enable ip-forwarding on this m/c so that i can connect my RH9 m/c through this. For enabling ip forwarding i did the basic thing "echo "1">/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward" And added route on the RH m/c as route add -net 10.254.254.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.1.10 dev eth0" (IP of Ubuntu m/c is "192.168.1.10 and RH m/c is 192.168.1.15) But some how ip-forwarding is not working properly.

When I select "enable desktop effects" and press "OK" in KDE, it will tell me "... X configuration ..." something. What the hell is that? I never met this problem in Gnome. Is it a KDE's bug?

Ubuntu Networking :: Enable Port Forwarding So Can Use Computer As A FTP Server?

Oct 3, 2010

I'm trying to enable port forwarding so I can use my computer as an FTP server to some friends. Here's my setup:

CLEAR wireless modem <--> LAN port 4 on router (not WAN) and LAN port 1 on router <---> eth0 in Ubuntu 9.10

The modem acts as a DHCP server which successfully assigns an IP address to my desktop system. I can also go onto the internet just fine on my desktop, and any other computer that connects to the router.

I have enabled port forwarding on the modem (not the router because it's being used as a switch, and not using its WAN port) to forward ports 21 and 80 to my desktop. What I don't understand, though, is that when I try to FTP to the modem's WAN IP address, the connection is refused. However, when I use websites such as:

www.canyouseeme.org
www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

They say ports 21 and 80 are open (and not other random ports like 22 or 23 which I tried to see if the site simply said everything was open) but I cannot access my site from a web browser.

I was wondering what it was that's stopping computers from the Internet from communicating with my computer? The modem? The router? Configs?

OpenSUSE Install :: Reboot Directly To Another System?

Jul 7, 2010

in a previous version of openSUSE (I think it was v10.3), there was a possibility to directly/automatically start another OS after exiting (rebooting) openSUSE. This could be done through "right-clicking" on the Reboot (Restart) button from the KDE's log-off dialog and choosing the OS you wanted to be started after the restart. Please, does anybody know if this is possible in openSUSE 11.2 (KDE 4.4)? PS: I know that GRUB enables that, but I prefer a "GUI way" rather than using command line and editing configuration files

Ubuntu :: Forwarding System Email Through External Gmail?

Jan 14, 2010

I have configured a command line (9.10) server to forward all the system email notices to an external Gmail account.

All is forwarding fine except, all the emails from root have a return email address of "root <myaccountname@gmail.com>".

I do not think that it is a big security issue but, I would prefer that the root emails were forwarded to an existing user account on the server and then forwarded to my external Gmail account. That way the return address would not say "root" within the address but rather "existinguser <myaccountname@gmail.com".

Anyone have a thought on this? Is exposing the "root" name within the return email address a serious security issue?

I checked /var/log/message, dmesg ... seems nothing there.

General :: Can I Uninstall Another System Distro Directly Over Mint On Dual Boot

Feb 18, 2010

I think the title says it all really - I've installed Mint onto a Acer aspire 5315 laptop. Its a dual boot system using Vista Basic. Grub works perfectly and to be honest Mint is great. really enjoying playing and learning. My problem is that the laptop overheats when using Mint - the cpu fan doesn't cut in and the laptop shuts down to protect the system. According to a swift google this seems to occur with mint (possibly particularly with Acer's) and maybe with other distro's too. However I'd like to keep trying to see if i can find one that works.

So my rather obvious newbie question is can I just get another distro dvd and install this onto the partition containing mint thus deleting the previous install? If I did this would Grub show the new distro ok or would it keep searching for Mint. I have a back up so if all else fails I can reinstall everything but that will have to wait till I get home

Ubuntu :: Karmic Re-enable System Beep

Feb 24, 2010

I like the system beep because I can tell checkgmail to beep when an email comes, that way my speakers don't have to be on.Anyways, I did a fresh install of Karmic the other day. Something is being weird with me when I try to re-enable the beep. Karmic blacklisted pcspkr in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf . Here's what happens:I leave "blacklist pcspkr" in blacklist.conf and restart. I do "sudo modprobe pcspkr" and then "beep", and it beeps. Good.

Then I comment out "blacklist pcspkr" in blacklist.conf and restart. I do "beep". Nothing. I do "sudo modprobe pcspkr" and then "beep". Nothing. I do "lsmod | grep pcspkr". It's listed there as it should be. I check with "sudo grep pcspkr /var/log/dmesg" and find no errors.
