Oct 25, 2010Instead of upgrading to 10.10, I decided to install everything from scratch. Since the installation I can't make Firefox and Thunderbird work with the profiles I have always used on an NFS share. Locally Everything seems to work fine, but when I use the profiles on my NFS server I get in trouble. With Thunderbird I can read the email that is already there, but I can't get new one. It seems to hang during the connection. I can also write Drafts, and save them. RSS seems to work too. With Firefox I get the error "the bookmark and history system will not be functional because one of Firefox's files is in use by another application". When I try to open a url it doesn't work. Both applications start very slowly, but only when I open the profiles on the NFS share. I can happily read and write files on that share, so it can't be an access problem. I have a 64 bit machine, and I am using the Firefox 3.6.11 32 bit that I downloaded separately. Thunderbird is the one coming with the distribution.

I have tried deleting the profile and profile.ini in kubuntu and copying over the windows profile to home/user/.mozilla/firefox for example with firefox, this didn't work. I tried copying it there with the existing profile and changing the path of the ini file, to the windows profile name, this didn't work either. The only thing that I can think is that I am using 64 bit windows and 32 bit kubuntu.I have tried using firefox sync, this didn't work either.

Mar 2, 2011I've been distro-hopping for a year or so, been through the downstream versions, Ubuntu and Mint, and ended up here. Other than some serious headaches getting wireless up and running, its been great so far. My trouble is that I have lots of use invested in Firefox and Thunderbird. As I've been hopping around through distros I've just been copying my profile folders and just placing them in the .mozilla and .thunderbird folders in my user folder. Then the software just pops up with all of my old settings, addons and messages, etc.
But this hasn't worked in iceweasel and icedove. I have been hunting around online today and haven't found any clues, and don't yet know enough about linux to hack this out and troubleshoot it. Any thoughts? Is it something to do with user agent settings? Or profile.ini files? I'd like to avoid manually installing the tarballs for Firefox and Thunderbird, but it is starting to seem like maybe it is easier. As I also have read that certain addons don't work with iceweasel?

Oct 30, 2010I'm trying to shift from Windows to Linux I tried Ubuntu, but I was happy with it, so now I'm trying Debian. I installed the version i386 on an amd64. Since I still have to use XP I would like to share my Mozilla profiles. I followed the instruction I found on the web which worked well for Ubuntu/XP, but now I'm not able to get a working configuration on Debian Every time I launch Firefox/Iceweasel I get the message "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." I've tried to fix the problem following the instruction found in [URL] and other websites, but I failed. Firstly I tried with Iceweasel then I installed Firefox, but it didn't make any difference!

Slackware :: Getting Profiles To Work With The Newer Seamonkey?
Mar 2, 2010getting profiles to work with the newer seamonkey? I found that after the initial upgrade from 1.1.18 to 2.0.0 user profiles weren't migrated/imported, so I backed the upgrade out.
Now with 2.0.3 and a bunch of new vulnerabilities I re-installed and still can't get a profile migration.. I resorted to giving up on the idea all together, but even when I erased ~/.mozilla I still can't get any profiles to work with 2.0.x at all.
Any attempt to start up a second instance with a new profile (-P) brings up the same profile already in use in the first instance, and switching profiles via "profile manager" from a running seamonkey will close the previously open profile to open the next one ....

Jan 28, 2011I have an old HP Laserjet 5L which is connected to the parallel port of my computer. I could hp-setup to configure the printer. It is connected to
hp:/par/HP_Laserjet_5L?device=/dev/parport0
Everytime a want to print the printer is stopped with the error message
/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed
(tried to print as root and as a normal user doesn't work)
If I try to print directly to the device works with
echo "test" > /dev/lp0
but it does not work with
echo "test" > /dev/parport0
the permissions are set to

Jan 28, 2010I downloaded Firefox 3.6 from the Mozilla website, and installed Java Runtime and Java Browser Plugin from Ubuntu Software Center, but Java will not work within Firefox, it works with Firefox 3.5.7 installed from the repositories, but I really want to use Firefox 3.6. I've even tried UbuntuZilla, without any success. This is annoying as I visit a lot of Java enabled websites.

Mar 30, 2010Having been given a P4 computer "not running fast" had xp on it.I decided that the time had come to improve on Microsoft so I added an extra 1gb ram downloaded ubuntu, burn off a cd and set to work loading this computer with Ubuntu
Try 1 failed, boot of disk but stalled
Try 2 failed boot off disk but full of errors.
Try 3 from within windows, yes we have Ubuntu dual boot with a fresh install of XP, looking good took it off the work bench and plugged into my KVM system. Reboot.Err where is {Ubuntu} bit like a rabbit and hopped off the drive
Try 4 Boot up from inside windows only this time a full reformat and full install of "Bunny" {well it has hopped off once} so from now on, I shall call ubuntu Bugs after bugs bunny that well known cartoon fool. (What's up Doc)
Low and behold I now have a fully ? no! a working version of Bugs now running.Test it on U-tube, download install plug-in all working, let the kids now on it to try it out.Yip, bebo , facebook run A OK, and the built-in sound card works, great I can play a bit of music.At this point things start to fall apart.Rhythm-box, it will not play any of my mp3 files that I put on the hhd, it tells me but I downloaded the whole CD from Ubuntu web site.And when I try other things to download to play music I get the following message or same as.Now the last thing I want to learn is a complete new language.If bugs can not play standard mp3 files like every man and his dog has, what is the point in having a poor rated file player.

Installation went without problems, but now I can not start Firefox! The FF icon in the taskbar changed to a globe and says "Namoroka - FF pre-release" but firefox doesn't start by clicking onto it. I tried to manually remove all firefox packages and reinstalling either 3.0 or 3.6 but same problem again. I also installed epiphany too, but it shows the error "epiphany cannot be used at the moment, because initialization of mozilla failed".
I want to use the new Firefox (or old one, if 3.6 not possible) in Ubuntu!
P.S.: Now I'm writing with FF from my Windows installation under Wine.

May 5, 2010Right now I'm running Firefox 3.6.4. In ~/.mozilla/plugins I have a link to the Java plugin. I'm using Java version 6 update 20.
For some reason, Firefox will not acknowledge that I have the Java plugin installed. It won't show up under Add-ons > Plugins, and if I go to a web page that requires Java, it says I don't have it installed.
I've even moved my ~/.mozilla/firefox directory, allowing Firefox to create a new empty preferences directory, and Java still won't show up.
However, Java shows up just fine in Firefox 3.5. How do I get Java enabled?

May 16, 2010i've come to replacement my 80 yr old fathers win98 machine with lucidFirefox 3.6.3 says 'connecting to .....' when accessing a webpage (eg his home igoogle page,bbc.co.uk ) and then times out .It all works with opera and links2 and pings are the usual times and its doing DNS . I've added 4.4.4.4 and 8.8.8.8 to /etc/resolv.conf for good measure FF its configured NOT to use a proxy ( Im fed up looking and checking !) and ive tried the 'detect settings automatically'this is a 'mission critical' step. Going to linux is a big enough change , so getting FF working will be a deal-breaker

1) VMWare under Linux (using Physical Driver)
2) Dual Boot with Windows
Now, the idea is great, access my Linux from Windows, and use Unity.Then, I can run Konsole like if it would be a Windows app, pretty sweet I also want to run Ubuntu 10.10 as a stand-alone distro, without the need of VMWare (since it's installed in a Physical Drive)The problem is the Xorg.conf driver I want to create two "profiles" in Grub 2, so I can have 2 different versions of Ubuntu
1) will use the VMWARE driver in Xorg
2) will use the Nvidia driver in Xorg
By doing that, I'll be able to use Compiz with nice Nvidia effects whenever I want (play games, use Compiz Cube, etc, etc) I will also be able to use Ubuntu 10.10 from within Windows and use the power of Unity to run Ubuntu apps within Windows
