View 2 RepliesDoes anybody know a good option for a Skype based solution that works on Linux? I have a real problem with the current Linux version as it is a crappy, buggy and downgraded version of the Windows equivalent.
View 7 Replies View RelatedThe Linux ldd command can show the dynamic libraries used by an executable. It's a bash script. But it seems to be fragile, and does not work on some binaries. Is there an alternative tool? In my specific example, I can use:
% file datab2txt
datab2txt: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), statically linked, for GNU/Linux 2.4.0, not stripped
but ldd fails with:
% ldd -v datab2txt
not a dynamic executable
I'm fairly new to the Ubuntu community, having dl'ed Ubuntu 11.04 little more than a couple of weeks ago, deleting my Windows completely. I'm sure this has been said before, but I'm trying to find a good VoIP I can use to call my Windows using girlfriend who is currently very far away. Skype for Linux just crashes for me after a minute or two, Ekiga only allows me to make a call to any contact ONCE, then I can never do it again, tried Faceflow and couldn't even see or hear her. I'm running out of options, it seems. Will I really have to go back to windows just to see her?
View 5 Replies View RelatedGiven the recent dealings between Skype and Microsoft (here), one can guess that Linux support will be dropped. It wasn't amazing, but it ran. Moreover, security of transmitted data, in my own opinion, will be more questionable as of this acquisition.
What are the alternatives? If there are no full solutions - I propose the unification of several partial solutions into a merged FOSS project. I recommend a secure chat/video client with SIP capabilities and native ports for Linux Console, X, and FreeDos.
Last two days I am trying to find alternative to skype. So I decided to find solution for my family, friends to chat, call (audio, video) using opensource product on linux. I have tried the following: (using same clients and gtalk accounts on both test machines)
1. Kopete 1.0.80
Firstly, I like it because it is native in opensuse KDE system.
Secondly, it has optional jungle support for gtalk, which is ok for me.
The only problem, I cannot turn on jingle support, because there should be talk.google.com server , but the right server is gmail.com. Only with gmail.com server I can connect to my gtalk. I was managed to do it right, but my friends do not have jingle settings (libjingle installed). What should we do? Will we be able to talk when we activate it?
2. Pidgin 2.7.10 (libpurple 2.7.10)
Video calling, audio calling doesn't work at all. We using same version of pidgin on two computers, there is mention that it is calling but no progress after, nothing. Even camera turns on (no image though) but after doesn't turn off (camera light).
3. PSI 0.14 patched
Psimedia installed, doesn't call at all. Says that the client reject me or busy.
4. Empathy 2.32.2
No options for video and audio hardware, nothing to change at all). Call from menu doesn't work, nothing happens after I press "call". Call from chat window impossible because buttons are grey, are not active. Now error "could not sync the state of the new nicesrc with its parent"
5. Gajim
Even after writing down stun server stun.ekiga.net call buttons for video and audio call were inactive, unable to make call.
6. Ekiga
Using pctel.ru. Works ok, sometimes problems with intiating video, but still something. I am not very happy because it is not XMPP.
7. Twinkle works like a charm. The only one client using which I haven't had any problems at all. The only thing to tailor is audio codec (also encryption if you like).
I hope to make a call one day and to be sure that I haven't used any closed program for it!
I am using fedora 15 / 64. I installed skype from this tutorijal http://blog.randell.ph/2010/11/17/fe...llation-setup/.
When I try to start it I receive this
Code: skype: error while loading shared libraries: libXv.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I'm running openSUSE 11.0 (X86-64) and just installed skype 2.1.0.47. When starting it, I get skype: error while loading shared libraries: libQtDBus.so.4: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64 Where do I get the correct library from? Or which one should I point it to?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got an Aspire one Linpus Linux Lite and I have a problem installing Skype. When I tried to run Skype after downloading I got the following:
skype: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version 'GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (Required by Skype)
In the terminal window I typed the following: rpm -q glibc And got glibc-2.9-2 How do I install the required packages/libraries?
Code:
skype: error while loading shared libraries: libpng12.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.
I am looking for a good alternative to Skype. I would like to have video and voice calls with a family member who uses MS XP but would like to avoid Skype if possible. Does anyone know of a good client with good video and voice quality that will work on both platforms. I'd like it to use open standards so at least we can use different OS specific clients if one is not available for both platforms. Googling hasn't yielded much and some of the results refer to really old (~2006) articles or apps. I hope I'm not doomed to using Skype. I've resisted so long with using SIP clients for voice but am stumped now that I want to include video.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhy many Linux distros are trying to use always the latest versions of the libraries and don't save the old libraries for compatibility? I mean, I can see libtiff for example, i can found a libtiff.so.5 on my /usr/lib, but doesn't store a libtiff.so.4 or 3 just for binary applications or games. For this example, I need libtiff.so.4 for uplink.
That should happen too on the old version of sims for linux, some ID games or others. What's wrong with storing old libraries? PD: Yay, my first post on 3 years!
Is there any way to use a dynamic libraries as a static libraries instead when compiling, so that my resulting executable won't have them as dependencies?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a IOgear USB bluetooth adapter and a Sony DRBT101/BLK bluetooth headphones to use with my computer.Whenever I try to make a call using these headphones with skype, I can speak for say 10 seconds and then the headset disconnects completely from the system. I then have to reconnect the headset by switching it off and on. I do not have this problem listening to music using A2DP. It works fine with my mobile phone. When I change the profile to Telephony Duplex (HSP/HFP), it shows up as hands free, I thought it should be headset in blueman manager. My friend uses Plantronics headset with is Dell laptop with built in bluetooth and he says his comes up as headset not hands free. Could this be causing the problem?

I cant seem to text via skype, it doesnt go through. I testet the skype test call service and voice works fine, audio and mic. I have tried to google and search forums but no luck. I have before used skype on my netbook with my cellphone as a hot spot and it worked without problem but it doesnt have the same provider - different sim cards in phone and dongle.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have downloaded & installed the skype beta release for linux (now ancient?) on my newly build fedora 14 (64) box.
Under fedora 12, I made this work after several hours of mucking around by installing old libraries for 32 bit code in /lib and /usr/lib - as I got an error, I found the library and put it in place. This was painful and the WRONG way to do things - I should have been using yum!
It remains a shame that the Skype release for Linux is so old, but that is life.
Can anyone list the libraries needed (prefer yum names if possible) to make this work?
I can do this again the hard way and list the results for others (should have saved for myself, but I never dreamed that a newer Skype release would take so long) , but I am sure many folks have this working already. I am surprised there is no "yum install skype---" command.
Just curious how you can add libraries to /lib from the command line. My box just has a server distribution on it, so I obviously can't use synaptic. I downloaded a .tar.gz file for the libraries I need, and I assumed that you would use dpkg -i <packagename.tar.gz> but that doesn't seem to work.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install some third party software that looks for X11 libraries in either /usr/lib/X11 or /usr/lib64/X11, but both of these folders are empty on my CentOS 5.3 installation. Can someone tell me where to find these libraries, or what has replaced them? Based on what I've read so far, it looks like the xorg-x11-libs and xorg-x11-devel packages have been replaced in favor of the mesa-libGL stuff. Is this correct?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm executing the Wolfenstein Enemy Territory installer, and since finding the first package it missed, I've been stumped. It wants a gtklib-1.2.so, and I've been on the internet looking everywhere I know, I don't like to pester with easily-solvable problems.
I've found a lot about it, however no solutions when '-ubuntu' is added - seems Ubuntu folk apt-get this and that all the time, whereas I can't find what I'm looking for in the Software Manager or Software Search on [URL] I know the missing libraries are a simply case of back-tracking a bit and installing GTK1.x type packages, the thing is I can only find 2 onwards - I have everything in 64 and 32 versions, but just too reecent it seems.
For this case and in future similar cases - where are the old-school versions to be found, and how can they easily be added to SUSE if they come in an .rpm etc? A way of adding a broader selection to the package browser?
I've been trying to use the library boost/thread.hpp but I cant get it to link. Every time I try it looks like this:

I am learning C++ and wish to include some Boost functions in my code. My machine is running Debian Linux with the pre-installed boost binarys.I have a couple of questions:How do I include the library in my C++ code as there are no cpp or h files only binary files (eg /usr/lib/libboost_regex-d.so and /usr/lib/libboost_regex-d.a)How do I comile the code. I am using DialogBlocks for creating forms using wxwidgets. The editor also compiles the code using the gcc compiler. Do I have to give an instruction to the compiler saying which file is requried and where to find it? If so, any ideas how this is done?
