OpenSUSE :: Getting The Old GTK1.x Libraries?

Oct 19, 2010

I'm executing the Wolfenstein Enemy Territory installer, and since finding the first package it missed, I've been stumped. It wants a gtklib-1.2.so, and I've been on the internet looking everywhere I know, I don't like to pester with easily-solvable problems.

I've found a lot about it, however no solutions when '-ubuntu' is added - seems Ubuntu folk apt-get this and that all the time, whereas I can't find what I'm looking for in the Software Manager or Software Search on [URL] I know the missing libraries are a simply case of back-tracking a bit and installing GTK1.x type packages, the thing is I can only find 2 onwards - I have everything in 64 and 32 versions, but just too reecent it seems.

For this case and in future similar cases - where are the old-school versions to be found, and how can they easily be added to SUSE if they come in an .rpm etc? A way of adding a broader selection to the package browser?

Ubuntu Installation :: GTK1.2 Remix - SMART BOOT MANAGER Failed

Jul 3, 2010

I have a Dell Inspirion 3500 laptop with the following specs pentium II 266mhz processor floppy drive (registers in BIOS, attached to serial port in back) CD-ROM drive (doesn't registers in BIOS, although is displayed in system intialization prior to boot) 4 GB hard drive (wiped with Darik's Nuke and BOOT floppy disk)

I have tried to boot from all sorts of Windows CD's and Linux CD's. None will boot. So I choose to boot from USB. Since It is such an old laptop I needed to load the USB drivers before booting. SMART BOOT MANAGER failed. PLOP BOOT MANAGER booted to its own menu. It still would not boot to CD. So I tried putting an exact copy of the remix ISO onto a USB and loading it. This failed so I used UNETBOOTIN to extract the ISO to USB. PLOP finally recognized it and loaded the UNETBOOTIN MENU. From there I load the Graphical environment (since the dev said it wont load any other) Then UNETBOOTIN loads the REMIX into the "LIVE ENVIRONMENT" from USB. Once I was in the "LIVE ENVIRONMENT" I right clicked and opened a "TERMINAL EMULATOR" and from there I ran the sudo ./install.sh command to install it from the USB stick (dev's instructions). From there it says it can only install to a single blank hard drive of at least 500mb, but it makes no allowance for alternative hardware or software changes. Is it possible that since I have a floppy, cdrom, and usb stick installed during the install that it is causing an error? I choose yes.I enter username , then click yes. Then I choose hostname , and click yes. Now for the final step It says that the drive has partitions or filesystems in place. Here is what it displays

General :: Use Always The Latest Versions Of The Libraries And Don't Save The Old Libraries For Compatibility?

May 11, 2011

Why many Linux distros are trying to use always the latest versions of the libraries and don't save the old libraries for compatibility? I mean, I can see libtiff for example, i can found a libtiff.so.5 on my /usr/lib, but doesn't store a libtiff.so.4 or 3 just for binary applications or games. For this example, I need libtiff.so.4 for uplink.

That should happen too on the old version of sims for linux, some ID games or others. What's wrong with storing old libraries? PD: Yay, my first post on 3 years!

Sound is working fine though....I wasn't using Pulse to begin with, but don't understand what happened to them....think they got deleted in going to KDE 4.4.1 rel 228 today. Should I have those libraries installed for any reason? If so, what should I install?

PS: If I go to Yast, under multimedia, I know longer see Pulse as an option...only hda_snd_intel or whatever

OpenSUSE :: Unable To Install Software From Source B/c Missing C Libraries?

Jul 11, 2010

I'm having trouble installing software from the source files. From what I can gather the problem lies with not having the correct c libraries installed. My understanding is you use the ./configure, make, and make install commands in a terminal to install. And that the configure command checks to see if you have everything to install. this is the output when I try to configure:

checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for a thread-safe mkdir -p... /bin/mkdir -p

I havent used Linux in a long time. I dug up an old copy of Suse (version8.2), and installed it on an old 599MHZ PC. Ive been trying to update the various libraries to be able to get a updated version of Firefox installed. Is there any chance that this can work? I need to know if Im wasting my time and should just put winxp on this PC. Also, I cant get any repositories working. I assume the default ones I have on the Suse installation are bad and the ones for the later versions will not work.

Fedora Installation :: Checking For Libraries Currently In Use?

Jul 19, 2010

I have just installed from the Live Cd (Fedora 13). So far so good except that I have just installed the updates (which has taken some time) .

The updater screen shows a full progress bar and next to the progress bar is this text " checking for libraries currently in use" this has been at least one hour showing the same thing, it hasn't changed (PC is still running OK). Does this mean I can safely quit and the updates will be OK or should I keep waiting for a reboot screen or updates success message ? Is this normal, if so how long does it usually take to complete?
