Software :: Rsync With Multiple Timezones?

Jun 10, 2011

I have a backup server that is a backup destination for 10 servers.

Unfortunately each of those servers is in a different time zone. When Rsyncing to this box, it misses some files because the timezones are different.

Software :: Using Rsync For Copying Multiple Partitions?

Sep 1, 2009

Regularly I find myself cloning a machine using rsync. I find it understandable, reliable and fast, faster than dd, and I don't have to worry about different partition sizes etc. However, usually I partition my hard disk in a number of partitions:

Code:
/
/home
/usr
/var

When I start with a new, empty machine, I start up with a USB stick or live CD, and my new, empty hard disk becomes /dev/sdb. After creating the 4 partitions I have /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdb2... etc. My root directory is on the disk I used for booting, usually /dev/sda. So, in order to access my newly created partitions, I mount them on the /mnt/directory of my root:

Code:
mounted now later
/mnt/sdb1 /
/mnt/sdb2 /home
/mnt/sdb3 /usr
/mnt/sdb4 /var

In other words, I mount now /dev/sdb1 on /mnt/sdb1, while after copying /dev/sdb1 will become my root directory, /dev/sdb2 become my /home directory, etc. When I start the resync process to copy the image from a remote machine, I have to copy all 4 partitions separately. First the root directory, excluding /home, /usr, /var, then /home, then /usr, /var, like this:

Code:
action 1:
rsync --exclude='/home' --exclude='/var' --exclude='/usr' my.remote.machine:/ /dev/sdb1/

action 2:
rsync my.remote.machine:/home /dev/sdb2/

action 3:
rsync my.remote.machine:/usr /dev/sdb3/

action 4:
rsync my.remote.machine:/var /dev/sdb4/

That is a lot of typing and waiting. Sometimes I have a different partition scheme so it is not really feasible to write a script to use always. Now the Question: is there a smarter way of mounting the newly formatted disk (/dev/sdb1, /dev/sdb2... etc) in my root tree so I can perform the rsync copy in just one time, without all the excludes, but assuring that the correct source partitions end up on the correct destination partitions?

Red Hat / Fedora :: How Timezones Are Working - Need To Configure

May 13, 2011

I have a question regarding how timezones are working.
Indeed, if I configure "TZ=BST", I get: sh-3.2$ date
Fri May 13 07:43:39 BST 2011

And when I configure "TZ=Europe/London", I get:
sh-3.2$ date
Fri May 13 08:43:20 BST 2011

There is no BST file in /usr/share/zoneinfo, so I am asking how it is managed for BST settings and why it is different from setting Europe/London.

General :: DST Time Change For Positive Timezones Not Working?

Jan 11, 2010

I was doing some testing which is required for some of my products

Here is the strange behaviour i observed

First i did set the timezone to PST 2010 (which is less than GMT basically negative timezone)

zdump -v /etc/localtime |grep 2010
/etc/localtime Sun Mar 14 09:59:59 2010 UTC = Sun Mar 14 01:59:59 2010 PST isdst=0 gmtoff=-28800
/etc/localtime Sun Mar 14 10:00:00 2010 UTC = Sun Mar 14 03:00:00 2010 PDT isdst=1 gmtoff=-25200

[Code]....

Note:in the above case when i did set time to 2:59:55 and said ok by then CEST became CET already. That could be the reason why DST is not happening.

I tried with few other positive and negative timezone configuration all the negative time zones resets back properly where as all the positive timezones doesn't

All my timezone files are up to date,i am using fedora 9

On Karmic, every once in a while this error pops up near the notification area at the top right (also see attachment):

But the 'date' command shows the correct date/time and timezone. /etc/timezone is also set correctly. The machine is running ntpd and is connected to the net 24/7 via ethernet. I also don't see any 'timezone' errors in /var/log/* Which software is complaining? What is the "Error Console" it is referring to?

Server :: Rsync Execution - With Crontab - Have Given Full Path To Rsync Too

Apr 12, 2011

I have a tiny shell script to rsync files between two servers and remove the source files.

This script works fine, when it has been initiated manually or even when the rsync command is executed on the command line.

But the same script doesn't work, when I try to automate it through crontab.

I am using 'abc' user to execute this rsync, instead of root, as root login to servers are restricted in all of our servers, by us.

As I mentioned earlier, manual execution works like charm!

When this rsync.sh is initiated through crontab, it runs the first command(chown abc.abc ...) perfectly without any issues. But the second line is not at all executed, and there is no log entry i can find at /mnt/xyz/folder/rsync.log.

Server :: Rsync Fails In Cron - Ssh Key - For Rsync?

Dec 8, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server and Postgresql 8.4. I have a .sh script that is run by cron every other hour. That works fine. The .sh script includes an rsync command that copies a postgresql dump .tar file to a remote archive location via ssh. That fails when run by cron; I think because it is (quietly) asking for the remote user's password (and not getting it). I set up the public/private ssh key arrangement. The script succeeds when run manually as the same user that the cron job uses, and does not ask for the password. I am able to ssh to the remote server from the source server (using the same username) and not get the password prompt (both directions), so why doesn't rsync work? I even put a .pgpass file in the root of that user's directory with that user's password, and the user/password are identical on both servers.

I think the problem is rsync is not able to use the ssh key correctly. I tried adding this to my script but it didn't help.

Code:

Here is the rsync command embedding in the .sh script.

Code:

Here is the cron entry:

General :: Good Support To Multiple Desktops AND Multiple Monitors

Jun 4, 2010

I'm starting to have A LOT of opened windows in my machine. Sometimes within a project, I have e-mail/task management/personal e-mail/twitter, and a lot of different opened applications/terminals in my Linux workstation.Sometimes it would be interesting to have different workspaces to projects instead of this configuration I have nowadays that are classes of work (bad name, I know, but I think you got the idea).I'm starting to think about using two monitors: one with Corporate Management, Work and Personal. The second monitor is only the development state: each workspace here is about a project being worked on instead of groups of works like before. A workspace may be implementing different classes for example.

My question is: I just want to change to a second monitor using the mouse. I want to still be able to change workspaces in the same monitor using keyboard shortcuts. The keyboard shortcuts wouldn't change monitors, just worskpaces on the same monitor. All the tutorials I read (like this one) only tells how to use multiple monitors but doesn't answer my question about keyboard shortcuts.Does Linux (Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx or Debian 5.0.5 Lenny) support this envisioned setup (Different workspaces in a way that keyboard workspace switching only works in the current monitor) ? If so, how?I haven't tested this setup, that's why I'm asking. In this question the user says it works exactly how I want it to behave, can someone else confirm it?

General :: Multiple Servers Or One Server With Multiple VMWare?

Feb 7, 2011

I'm looking at setting up a couple automated systems: Here are a few examples:

* Internal accounting system to download and process emails
* Public web server to visit

I could put each system on its own separate box -- for example, it's generally good practice to separate anything that external users have access to (such as a webserver) from internal processes such as accounting. Now, rather than dishing out the money for two separate servers, could I get away with just installing new instances of VMWare on the same box for each system?

To give you an idea, these are not large scale computationally sensitive systems. The accounting one is simply downloading and tallying emails, and the latter is just a webserver with maybe 5 hits per day on a good day. I could definitely pick up a new box for say $50, but I wanted to know the general practice of using VMWare on the same box versus two separate boxes.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Multiple Nics With Multiple Gateway ?

Jun 16, 2009

I have a CentOS 5.3 box with three network interfaces in it. Each interface is attached to a separate VLAN and I want traffic to stay on each network segment. What I cant figure out is why I cannot get each interface to have its own gateway and everything gets sent through the default gateway. The basically takes my possible 3Gb total bandwidth and throws it down a single 1Gb pipe. Then on top of that, if I take down the interface (ifdown) that has the current default gateway,I loose contact to the other two interfaces. When I look at the routes, each one of the interfaces shows the gw as 0.0.0.0 and defers to the default route. So I delete the route and try to add a new route with:

[root@testsan ~]# ip route add 10.1.15.0/24 via 10.1.15.1 dev eth2

but end up with the error:

RTNETLINK answers: Network is unreachable

Ubuntu :: Rsync To NAS Over SSH

Sep 20, 2010

I've bought a NAS (Western Digital My Book World Edition 1TB) which I want to use to make backups (preferably incremental) of some important files.

After much deliberation in finding suitable backup software it seems like good old rsync is the best thing for the job (backintime struggles to copy to remote locations?)

I have enabled SSH on the NAS config. I'm using the following command to do a test run on a small folder:

Code:
sudo rsync -azvv -e ssh /home/matt/Careers/ admin@192.168.1.100:/public/AutoBackup/
And I get the following error:
Code:
admin@192.168.1.100's password:

Anyone know where I'm going wrong here? I'm sure it's probably something simple but I can't crack it. I've tried variations on the destination folder such as admin@192.168.1.100:/AutoBackup/ without success.

Ubuntu :: Using Rsync To Sync Within The LAN?

Jan 18, 2010

I want to use rsync to synchronize some folders on my LAN. I have this working with two scripts; one runs at the beginning of my work session and gets the latest directory tree from the server, and the other runs at the end of the session to put any local changes back on the server. My "get" script looks something like this:

Code:
rsync -avuzb --backup-dir=/home/user/rsync_backup_dir --delete my_server:/home/bak/common_data/ /home/user/data

This works well, and with the "b" option any file that has been deleted from the master directory tree on the server will be deleted from the local machine and moved to the local backup directory. This is a safety measure to prevent the loss of files through a mistake (on my part).

The problem is the "put" script:

Code:
rsync -avuzb --backup-dir=/home/user/rsync_backup_dir --delete /home/user/data/ my_server:/home/bak/common_data

I want to run both scripts from the local machine, but the "put" script will not save deleted files to a backup directory. I tried using a remote backup directory like "my_server:/home/user/rsync_backup_dir" but this did not work. Is there a way to backup files deleted from a remote server from an rsync script run locally?
