Mar 23, 2011I have a postscript printer. Whenever I request that Emacs print a man page it returns with a list of characters that it cannot print. Is there anyway to remedy this situation?

View 9 RepliesIf I type
Code:
man perl
on the command line, I get the man page for perl, which lists all of the sections into which the perl man pages have been split. How do I access one of these sections? For instance, the first section is perlintro, but if I type
Code:
man perlintro
I get an error saying there is no such manual entry. How do I access these parts of the manual?
Thought I'd post this as I couldn't find much about it online. I have an HP3745 and am running Ubuntu 10.04. For some reason I couldn't get anything from the black ink cartridge in test mode or for real. The printer would go through the motions but would return a blank page. Turns out it was because my COLOUR ink cartridge was empty!! Solution was simply to select print in grayscale. Also I find with this particular printer HPCUPS works better than HPLIP.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having problems in printing 'complex' PDF files. Simple pages are no problem. Good examples is Royal Mail postage printing. Generated PDF displays correctly - and in Ubuntu 10.10 printed perfectly. Since I upgraded to 11.04 I get a blank page. No matter what I do. I have tried everything suggested when I googled the problem - but no solution works. I am printing across the network through my NAS box (no changes to that at all) to an HP Laserjet 1010. It all works correctly and as expected under Windows - so the setup is fine with printer and NAS. its a problem introduced by 11.04.
View 3 Replies View RelatedInherited an old Laserjet 6P that was working fine XP. No matter which printer driver I use all I get are pages and pages of garbage during the test print. I have tried the hplip, gimp, ljet4 drivers without success. I have tried sending text files from the command line as well (cat /etc/passwd > /dev/lp0) with the same result.
Fedora 11 64
cups 1.4
hplip-3.9
hpijs-3.9
Anyone using this printer with cups 1.4? Any ideas which driver to use?
Im unable to print pdfs. the printer only gives me a blank page. what do i need so it can print? I tried going to "advanced" and checking "print as image" but it does not work. Printer still gives me a blank page.
I have an HP printer Photosmart C6100 series.
I installed Xubuntu and was thrilled to see that it had already setup my Brother HL-2140 USB laser printer. However, there is something seriously wrong with the setup. When you try and print, even a test page - it just churns through the entire paper tray printing nothing. Also, when you restart the computer it tries to print the jobs again. I went to Printing and selected the printer but could not find where you could see the print job queue. I did see it during troubleshooting and was able to delete the jobs on the troubleshooting screen.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI would often like to print out information from a page on a website. I don't want all the rest of it - the pages before and after.
The trouble is that the websites page numbering, when it is available, doesn't often conform to my printer and the size of the page on the screen. So I guess at,say, page 6 and get something like page 3 if I printed it all out.
I have a large image that I want to print over 4 pages, each page showing 1/4 of the overall image, that I will past together. I'm doing this from GIMP on an up-to-date fc12 system. Searching around I find that there is a "scale" field in the print dialog and the lp command that cups supports and according to the documentation if I set scale to "200%" it should do what I want. However, when I set scale to 200% I get only one page with the upper left 1/4 of the page and then nothing. How do I get it to print the remaining 3 pages?
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis printer has worked fine with FC14 on my AMD x86_64 system for months using the printer drivers from the Brother Solutions Center web site (see below). I installed FC15 today from the network CD and installed the same printer drivers. Test print works fine, and just now this web page printed OK using Firefox. But when I try to print from LibreOffice Writer or Thunderbird, a message appears briefly at the bottom of my Gnome3 desktop that the job is being printed and then another message saying that printing is complete. Nothing is sent to the printer, however. In Thunderbird, the Print dialog window says the status of the MFC-240C is "No pages found!" I tried deleting the printer using System Setings -> Printers and reinstalling using system-config-printer, selecting the Brother MFC-240C, with no change.
Brother drivers:

mfc240ccupswrapper-1.0.1-1.i386.rpm

View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from 13.0 to 13.1 and now I have strange behaviors with the printer. It is an Epson Stylus Photo RX640. It was working well with the vanilla Gutenprint 5.2.2 that came in Slack 13.0. The printer is shared and used from other slackware boxes and a mac. Upgrade to 13.1 (gutenprint gets to be 5.2.4) ...
Now when I print from the machine that has the printer attached I get full black pages, and cups shows errors. The Mac is still able to print well (probably because it is using its own PPD and passing through directly to the printer). I then removed gutenprint, and then removed the 5.2.2 PPDs (that were still in the system). Reinstalled gutenprint from the Slackware 13.1 distro. And the problem persists.

I have a Cent OS 5.4 32 bit final installed in my dedicated server.
I used to run lighttpd with php in my server until now and all was fine. But yesterday I changed my website which needs apache to run. So installed apache using yum install httpd command.
Then I added the virtual host name of my domain in webmin panel but when i try to run my php script in browser then its not opening php pages.
Instead it downloads php files like index.php when i open in browser. So I guess apache is not able to compile and run php pages. Only html pages are opening right now..
when i input man <cmd>.....it's saying formatting pages....n then it is displaying blank page.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI expected more from ubuntu 10.4 with regards to printing with exact size photos and with poor auto colour printing but the situation remains unchanged! for instance .. the photo size configurations for ubuntu/fspot/gimp and others are not compatible with my printers (HP and Brother) .. here in Europe a typical standard size photo (10x15inches or 150x100mm are not even on the Ubuntu listing? I have tried all listed possibilities including "custom" (which does not seem to ever work correctly?)and the result at best is photos with uneven boarders or at worse my printer goes a bit crazy with much wasted photo paper and expensive ink ...even photos selected for "no boarders" still produces photos with the self same uneven boarders.
I have tried pretty much everything over time following advice in this forum and including using HPlip and updating drivers required for my Brother printer but the root problem seemingly lies with the Ubunto photo size setup listing. Working with Ubuntu over the years I have found that it can do pretty much everything that Windows can do except for this dam ongoing photo quality and configuration problem.
I'm very new to Linux, and I have ran a Windows XP server before, with a Apache2 Server software for Windows. and didn't have any problems with it, but I really want to set this server up with Linux.
The server is running, but the only thing that comes up in the browser, is the html pages, the pages call all the images from a folder /images/ but for some reason I can't get it to pull the folder up. None of the graphics show on any of the pages.
I also have a VirtualHost setup, and have another website set up in the DocumentRoot with the 2nd site, but it won't come up ether, even tho it is listed as the 2nd VirtualHost, and have that folder set up as the DocumentRoot.
I'm just using IP Addresses for now till I get this all sorted out.So if I enter the IP the main page comes up, just no graphics. if I enter the IP Address/2ndSiteFolder/ I get a directory listing with the 2nd site folder listed, so now if I click on the 2ndSiteFolderName, it comes up as IP/2ndSiteFolder/2ndSiteFolder/ Now the 2nd site comes up, and so does all the Graphics for that site, even if I go to some of the other subfolders site. So its just weird. I don't know what I need to do to get this to work right.
I know it has to do with setting up the folders for VirtualHost, I just don't know what it is. I have been working on this for a week, and I'm not getting anywhere..
I am sufferihng from two problems running emacs in Fedora 12: Firstly, whether I am logged in as root or not, starting emacs from an xterm gives me the following messages: Finished loading /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/egg/leim-list.el and load others... Loading /usr/share/emacs/23.1/leim/leim-list.el (source)... Loading /usr/share/emacs/23.1/leim/leim-list.el (source)...done Not much of a problem, but I would like to know how to prevent this.
However, if I am logged in as root, or if I use 'su -c emacs' I get an additional message and then emacs takes a long time to start up. The additional message is: socket(): Address family not supported by protocol I did not get this in Fedora 10, and it is not so much the message but more the delay of a few seconds in starting up which is annoying me.
Since upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 I have been unable to use Emacs23. Upon starting Emacs, it immediately causes X to crash and I am returned to the login screen.I thought of looking for a log file and providing it here or in a Launchpad post to shed some light on the problem, but I don't know which log I could provide (if there is one).
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter I installed GNU Emacs 23 to my Ubuntu system, every time I invoke the "emacs file" command, it launches Emacs.Because opening up Emacs takes time on my PC's last century hardware, and it consumes quite a big chunk of memory too. I wonder if I can still do some quick text editing using Terminal's emacs mode?

View 1 Replies View RelatedAll I want is that when I press the "TAB" key, I will ALWAYS get an actual TAB character--not spaces, not relative indenting with tabs mixed with spaces, just one singlel TAB character.
I tried every possible option I could find, but nothing works. I absolutely despise the relative indenting, and I haven't found a way to turn it off...
I have looked in all the usual places but cannot find emacs or xemacs... Does this mean I have to install it manually??

I'm trying to change the colours in emacs ( I could do with a darker background). From what I could find I have to install emacs-goodies-el.noarch, which I have done. However, M-x load-library RET color-theme RET M-x color-theme-select RET then does nothing and I cannot find a way to change the colours.looks like the instructions were wrong, it was the color theme package i need now.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Fedora 14 in an unused partition after having used Fedora 12 for some time. I used Add/Remove Software to download and install emacs successfully. However, there appears to be a bug in this version of emacs -- the menu bar grabs focus and will not give it back without cllicking on a menu item. I find this bug very annoying and would like to scrap 23.2 in favor of another version. According to emacs bug reports, this bug has been fixed in emacs 23.3 which is available right now from the emacs home page, but only as a tarball.
How long does it usually take for a new version, such as emacs 23.3, to become available as a Fedora rpm? Would it be possible for me to downgrade by installing the emacs 23.1 rpm? If so, how do I get it? (Fedora's Add/Remove Software lists only the 23.2 version for me.)
I'm using emacs as editor. When using Emacs with any kernel for the 11.4 version, I observe that the cursor does not follow the arrow keys, and that some characters are randomly appearing in the Emacs text windows. This disappears when using the failsafe kernel. What could be the origin of this flaw and what can be done for solving this issue ?
