i have check /etc/pam.d/system-auth for the "ccount" entry, but it does not exist. "ccount" existed before in /etc/pam.d/system-auth but i managed to change it back to "account." i have grepd for the "ccount" string in all files under /etc/pam.d and i was not able to find it. it seems that the system-auth is not able to take the now "account" string insted of "ccount" altough i have restarted crond here is my system-auth file on the affected server:

Ubuntu :: Changing File System Type To Another Filesystem Type - Does It Effect On Data?

Feb 4, 2011

In my system around 73gb(pc-desktop) i have,1 primary partition(windows)-25gb, 1-extended partition(remaining gb) 3 logical partitions were there in (under) extended partition in one of the logical partition is d:drive. in my hard disk d: drive is -/dev/sda5

previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal

After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data

By doing that

1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.

2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.

Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)

I had very imp data in d:drive

Debian :: Server Type Install On Legacy System?

Sep 6, 2011

I purchased an older Dell (p4 1.8G 256M) just to run some low demand programs. They don't require a GUI - just ssh/cli type of access. will be a server type - no kb or monitor. Can someone give me some pointers where to start at? I've never done a Debian install - the install process may address these questions - but figured I would throw it out here. I've used Ubuntu for several years now but I doubt that it would be the best distro for a legacy system....

When I tried to resize /dev/sda2, it gives me the error "File system type not recognized". let me know how to find out the file system type of the partition.

I`m trying to compile sources of kernel module which has been written for kernel 2.6.9. There were many changes in kernel headers since then in current kernel sources. I`ve found that old /asm/system.h was moved under architecture dedicated directory /arch/*/include/asm/system.h. Anyway during sources compilation I`m having errors related to kernel sources. It looks like there is something wrong with this /asm/system.h

Ubuntu :: Change Or Delete Obsolete System File Type

May 23, 2010

I use Markdown to store all of my source documents. Unfortunately, the .md extension maps to application/x-genesis-rom under Ubuntu. I'm not sure why that would be a system default MIME type, but I'd like to change it.

I've tried using:

Code:
gksu assogiate

to modify my file type cache. Unfortunately, even as the SU, I can't modify the entry for this file type. The "Remove" button is inactivated for the entry. (See attachment.)

How can I get rid of this (obsolete?) file association? Alternatively, how can I make my new one (text/x-markdown) take precedence?

Ubuntu :: System Hangs Whenever Module Is Inserted Or Removed?

Jun 26, 2010

After the updates about a week ago I noticed my system was hanging (screen and mouse frozen, unable to switch desktops, trl+Alt+SysRq+B still reboots) frequently. Though sometimes the system would not hang but become extremely sluggish and unresponsive. I've been able to determine that the problems occur whenever a module is added or removed. I can cause this problem with such commands as:

sudo modprobe aes
sudo rmmod raid0

I've tried multiple kernels but the problem persists. I've run memtest on the system but no errors have been found. I wonder if this could be some other sort of hardware problem but I'm suspicious that this began after a set of updates. I've seen message such as this in the kern.log:

Code:

Jun 25 22:35:48 localhost kernel: [ 240.480059] INFO: task modprobe:2672 blocked for more than 120 seconds.
Jun 25 22:35:48 localhost kernel: [ 240.492925] "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message.
Jun 25 22:35:48 localhost kernel: [ 240.506918] modprobe D 00000000ffffffff 0 2672 2650 0x00000004

[code]....

I've tried using strace but that was not helpful. This is becoming a serious problem as I cannot load any encrypted volumes due to the inability to load the aes module. dpkg is currently in an interrupted state as the system hung when upgrading virtualbox-3.2 when it attempted to remove the modules. So my system is barely functional and I cannot see any way to fix things.

I'm doing a custom version of mod_musicindex, but can't get the cache to write like it's supposed to.example cache file: /tmp/testing/cacheNow, normally I think setting the dir testing and file cache to www-data:www-data would be enough. Permission denied. I tried 666 as well, figuring why not. Permission denied.777 works, but thats pretty far out there...Am I using the wrong user/group? I figured apache modules would run as apache.Do I need to use 777? 700 or 744 don't work, which is making me think it's not running as apache...

For some reason, my users are complaining that TRAC - our bug systems is throwing errors when looking for its module templates. These templates are usually built by Apache when it restarts or reloads and it puts them in /tmp/.python_eggs. I did a df-h and the drives had plenty of space, but the concerning thing is tmpfs shows 0% used.. We have not had a power outage or or restart in over a few months. I thought perhaps TMPwatch is clearing though, but there are no logged messages in the logs.

General :: Accidentally Type Concatenate Large File On Remote System

May 6, 2010

Every once in a while on a computer I'm ssh'd into, I will accidentally type "cat largefile.txt" and my screen will start rushing with text for the next 10 minutes. I'm always working in a screen session, so my current solution is to just log out and then log back in, and since it can go 100X faster when I'm logged out, it'll finish in the short time it takes me to type my password in again. Is there a better way? Either involving the fact I'm in a screen session? Or a way to do this within SSH? What doesn't work: detaching from the screen session (doesn't respond until file is done outputting) trying command to move to a different window in the screen session (also doesn't respond) typing ctrl+C to kill cat command (also doesn't respond, probably because the command is done and the buffers just have to catch up).

Fedora :: Telinit - Illegal Run Level 333

Oct 12, 2009

I just upgraded Fedora 10 to Fedora 11. When I rebooted I just had a flashing cursor. So I typed Ctrl-Alt-F2 to open a console window on booting. That worked fine. I was going to edit xorg.conf because I suspected the problem was related to haveing installed the latest Linux NVIDIA drivers (and custom kernal) in Fedora 10 before upgrading to Fedora 11. But, I decided to edit the run level in /etc/inittab first. Unfortunately, I fat fingered run level 3 to runlevel 333. No when booting I get hung up with the error "telinit: illegal run level 333". When I try to use Ctrl-Alt-F2 to open a console window on booting now it doesn't work. How to get into a console window with this error?
