Software :: Moving Transmission To A New Machine?
Sep 29, 2010
I've just built a new machine and installed 10.04 Ubuntu on it (like the last one). As Transmission was in the middle of downloading when I changed machines I'd like to move the database/settings so I can carry on where I left off. (I have moved the drives to the new machine). Also want to move JDownloader likewise.

I'm trying to install the new version of transmission on a 9.04 machine. I have never messed with my sources.lst file, but it looks like I will need to in order to get things working properly. How can I do this?

I can only access the Transmission web interface while the Transmission-gtk client is running. When I close it, the web interface is no longer available. I try to manually start the transmission-daemon, but the process never shows up as running.

My Debian Lenny box has two hard drives: a smaller one, upon which I installed the system and a 500GB drive which, during installation, I assigned for mounting as the "/home" directory. A few days ago, the smaller (system) hard drive crashed. Although fsck was able to make the drive mountable again, many system files (esp. things like inittab) were lost.
Since the machine, itself, had actually been pretty old when I first installed Debian (Etch, originally), I am going to be replacing it with a new system and I have a few questions about getting this all done.
First of all, the old computer was a Pentium 4 and the new one is a Dual-core, 64-bit Pentium (E6600) with 4GB RAM and a 500GB SATA drive. I'd like to install 64-bit Debian Squeeze onto that drive and, since I've never used the 64-bit Debian before, would like to know if there are any pitfalls or caveats - especially any dire reasons I should stick with 32 bits, instead.
Next, I would like to keep the other 500GB (IDE) drive mounted on "/home" so that my things would be where they already were on the old system - especially files relating to Iceweasel and Icedove. Of course, there are no binaries on that drive, since I had all of that on the drive that crashed, but are there any other things I must take into consideration? Also, what would be the best way to make that drive "/home" during the new installation without wiping it out, but having it ready for when I create the users so I can point them to their appropriate directories?
Finally, since the old computer had been an Etch system that had been upgraded to Lenny and since I would be installing Squeeze (and, likely, the 64-bit Squeeze, at that) onto the new system, would there be any problems with the above scenario, considering the potential of older configuration files, etc. on the old "/home" drive?
My subject line says, "Updating while moving to new machine," but these really may not be "update" questions, per se. Then again, the presence of that old hard drive does introduce some update-like elements into the equation, and that is why I am asking these questions.

I'm hoping this is the right sub-forum, if not please move this post. My question is, how would I go about moving an LVM based virtual machine to a different host? Can I just use dd to copy the entire logical volume to a file, move the file to the other host, then again use dd to copy the file onto a newly created logical volume? I'm using KVM by the way.

I had Ubuntu 10.04 on a machine with SilImage and 3Ware raid controllers (Fakeraid) working in it just fine. Built a new machine with 10.04 as well then moved the whole array across (Cable for cable etc. - NO changes). The new machine 'sees' the controller and 2 drives per card in Disk Utility - all looks good, BUT the array does not seem to work as an array. Obviously the drives are full.

I am tossing my old machine with CentOS 5.4. I will be installing a new server with Debian 5.0. How can I move the POSTFIX data files and email accounts so that I can keep the users from losing all of their IMAP and unreceived POP3 email? Or, if that isn't available, how could I restore their mailboxes to the new POSTFIX once all of the accounts are re-setup on the new machine?

I have been learning Debian by using a virtual machine. After fine-tuning my installation procedure, I decided to copy that installation to my physical system. The hard drive already has another Linux based system installed. I plan to dual boot.After copying files I updated fstab and menu.lst.The partition scheme between the virtual and physical environments are similar, but the partitions are not mapped exactly the same.Thus the Debian system on the physical hard drive fails to boot simply because the initrd is created for the root partition location on the virtual machine. The initrd created in the virtual machine is looking for the root file system on /dev/hda1 whereas on my physical drive the new location is /dev/sda7.How can I rebuild the initrd on the physical system? I started to use the installation DVD in rescue mode, but I did not get too far.

I like the buttons on the left. I'm running 10.04 & I know how to move them. The problem is that changing themes will move them back right. OK, if the new theme has them on the right that's OK. But going back to the other theme doesn't change them back. They don't seem to be controlled by the theme, or I'm just not doing it right.

I have limited experience in terminal, but let me first explain what I am trying to do to see if there is some easier way to do it. Basically I want to change the skin in aMSN. I downloaded the new skin but am unable to unzip or move it without /root permissions. I don't know how to acquire this without being in terminal. So I figured there had to be some way to go into the terminal and use it to move the unzipped folder from the desktop to the aMSN skins folder.

I want to start off by saying I'm very new to Ubuntu. I have been using Ubuntu for about a week now and have not looked back!! Now on to my issue. I have been tying to update Transmission 1.75(9117) to the lasted version (transmission-1.92) but i can't seem to get the Synaptic Package Manager to find it. I have downloaded transmission-1.92 and extracted it on to the desktop but Synaptic Package Manager still can't find it.

I can't seem to get transmission to boot up at start up. I read that I just needed to put "transmission -m" as the command in the start up window, but that doesn't seem to be working and I have no idea where the actual file resides to point to it

Two years ago I setup a small ARM based home server running Debian 7, the system ran an automated sftp backup from my phone, a transmission server and a VPN (open vpn).So anyway I upgraded my home PC and also upgraded the ARM home server to a GB-BXBT-1900 as I wanted to run some VM's.My only issue is that I have been unable to get transmission working the way i want it... For example I run my OS from a USB3 32GB sandisk drive, I then have a 500GB 2.5 laptop hard drive to store my VM's and transmission files, the VM's run perfectly fine when directed to read and write to the sata drive but no matter what I do I am unable to change the default transmission download directory.The moment i do this the download will start, hit around 4MB then pause.Amended chmod and chown on the directory ie /mnt/500/Downloads, also usermod -a -G debian-transmission myuser but nothing I do seems to work, if i leave it all to its default directorys on the USB drive it works but i just cant get this to work on the mounted drive.

One of the updates (Karmic) this morning listed the following:
Update
transmission-common
lightweight BitTorrent client (common files)
Description
Transmission is a simple BitTorrent client. It features a very simple, intuitive interface (gui and command-line) on top on an efficient, cross-platform back-end. This package contains the common files for the different transmission versions.
Changes
Changes for the versions:
1.75-0ubuntu2
1.75-0ubuntu2.2
Version 1.75-0ubuntu2.2:
* SECURITY UPDATE: fix arbitrary file overwrite via crafted torrent file
- debian/patches/CVE-2010-0012.patch: adjust metainfo.c to check for '../'
- CVE-2010-0012
So, I employed the update. Problem is, I do not see this as an installed application. TRANSMISSION is not listed in any submenu under the Applications menu OR Add/Remove.

When I try to open Transmission I get a message: "Couldn't open "/home/shai/.config/transmission/lock": Permission denied", and the only way to open it is by using gksudo.
I read on another thread that I need to delete that file, but the file doesn't exist.
What should I do?

I've installed many different versions on Ubuntu, many different times and I've never had a problem with transmission... untill now. I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 ( I was already previously using 10.04) and I updated and set up transmission but when I tested the port it said it was closed. This has never happened before.
I tried changing the port about 15 times but it says they are all closed. So I tried opening one..
Code:
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 50970 -j ACCEPT
... but still nothing. I have no firewall running and everything else works fine. Transmission was working before, on the same ports, same version of transmission, and same version of Ubuntu. Nothing has changed.

UPDATE: Actually it's version 2.04 not 2.0, guess the site i followed was a little dated.
so i was a little hasty in upgrading Tranmission to version 2.0 and after a while i noticed that the new version is really slow especially for public torrents my question is; is it possible to downgrade to version 1.93?
i followed these command to install the new version.
Code:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:transmissionbt/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get upgrade

I am using ubuntu netbook edition 10.04 on acer aspire one. My wireless is working perfectly when I am surfing the net or downloading ..... videos however when I use transmission (bit torrent) it will download for awhile then my wireless will not work and yet it shows that it is connected...then I have to reconnect again then the torrent starts downloading for awhile usually 1-2 mins then the wireless will fail again.
An interesting point to note: When I connect the ethernet cable to my netbook, bit torrent download perfectly it only happens when i'm using wireless. It is annoying how I have to physically connect my netbook to the modem to download bit torrent files.

Ideally I would love to have a script that watches my Home/Dropbox/Attachments folder for any torrent files. When there is a torrent file in the Attachments folder it will launch Transmission if it is not up already.But if not I can do it this way tooBasically what I somewhat have now is I'm trying to use Dropbox to start Transmission when I want it to.I have this script running every 3 minutes in Ubuntu Tweak to watch for any scripts I want to run from my Dropbox/remote/commands folder. Whenever a script gets placed in the commands folder it runs it. Which is this
Code:
#!/bin/bash
REMOTEFOLD="${HOME}/Dropbox/remote"
[code]....
