Software :: Menu Bar Tags Blank In Various Applications After Ubuntu Install

Jan 12, 2009

I installed Ubuntu recently and all generally went well except the menu bar tags in various applications like OpenOffice are blank. The bar itself has blanks(__) where 'File' and 'Edit', etc, would otherwise be. If I click on the blank, the drop down menu shows the various icons with the names blanked after it...makes it really difficult to work with unless you've memorized all of the icons. I suspect some software library was not installed or improperly installed originally on the Ubuntu install but I don't know what it would be.

Ubuntu :: 90% Of The Applications Install - Last Release - Do Not Show Up Later On In Applications Menu

Jul 24, 2010

I feel shy asking this question but, 90% of the applications I install in Ubuntu (last release), do not show up later on in the applications menu, so I cant run them. I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?

CentOS 5 :: Blank Screen After Fresh Install / Why System Hanging Before GRUB Menu?

Mar 28, 2011

I installed CentOS 5.5 last night using the DVD ISO (from a USB drive thanks to the Universal USB Installer). I selected the Server and Virtualization packages, and finished the install all the way through. At the end, the installer asked me to remove any installation media and reboot the system. After rebooting, the system hangs on a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner that does not accept text. This is before the GRUB screen appears. For partitioning, I created a 4GB swap partition on sdb and a 16GB ext3 partition on sda, mounted at /, with the remaining free space on sdb mounted at /storage.

Does anyone know why this system is hanging before the GRUB menu?

Ubuntu :: Applications Menu Failing To Install Properly With Synaptic Package Manager

May 29, 2010

Ubuntu 10.01 Lucid I had a few problems with applications failing to install properly with Synaptic Package Manager which resulted in a slew of launchers in my Applications > Other folder which all delivered error messages. These all had some kind of grey screen icon. I deleted them after uninstalling the applications which failed to install (wine 1.2, wine-gecko 1.2, then later wine 1.0, Wine-gecko 1.0, and winetricks.) I didn't notice that some non-wine applications also were given the grey-screen icon, and accidentally deleted "Archive Mounter." I know that I only deleted the launcher not the application, but don't know how to re-create the launcher in the Applications menu. Would someone...

1 - Right-click on the Applications panel,
2 - Select Edit Menus
3 - Find "Archive Mounter" (probably in "Other" folder)
4 - Select Properties for the launcher, look at the Properties sheet and tell me what the Archive Mounter command is, so I can re-create the launcher manually? And if you could, the path to the icon too

Ubuntu :: Getting A Blank Screen With No Grub Menu?

Sep 1, 2011

So after installing linux for the first time - version 11.04, first there are 1000 problems which don't fix especially the fact it didn't boot into linux half the time. I managed to get on it and there was an update, thinking this would fix something I updated it and now I can't do anything on my laptop! Before I could atleast log onto windows but I can't even do that now. The place where you can press f12 to go into the bios and change priority I can't even get there because when it says to press f12 I press it but nothing happens and it still takes me to a blank screen with no grub menu no nothing.

Ubuntu :: Can't Access The Grub Menu - Get A Blank Screen

Apr 25, 2011

i have 2 hard drives connected to sata ports randomly on my motherboard ( i didnt do it in any order )

1. Western digital 500GB - Windows 7
2. Seagate 500GB - Linux HDD - had ubuntu 10.04 on it before suse

Ok basically, ive been trying distro's by installing them on my linux HD, my favourite is ubuntu, but i wanted to see what else is out there so i tried out OpenSUSE, and with suse i unfortantly came across many problems with grub-legacy, and i solved that eventually by changing my boot hard disk in BIOS to the seagate, and installing grub on that Ive never had a grub issue in the past using ubuntu, only with suse Then i decided to go back to ubuntu because everything just works and i like .deb packages, so i installed 10.10 32Bit

Everything went fine, chose default install options, formatted the Seagate drive, and installed to the seagate, HD changedt the boot drive to the western digital in BIOS ( were ubuntu likes to install grub in the past ) booted fine, installed fine, grub showed fine, booted to linux then i went back to windows for a day of gaming and fun, i just rebooted about 30 minutes ago to play with linux, and i cant access the grub menu my pc goes to the POST screen and then were grub should show, i get a blank screen and the pc just reboots to the POST constantly this problem has never happened with ubuntu, ive had 10.10 before, this is all started after removing opensuse

ive tried F8 and booting from both drives, the seagate i just get a white underline for ages and nothing happens and i cant boot to windows on the WD Im currently on my livecd im using the 11.04 livecd, all my cds arent labelled, so i have no idea which is which, i just chucked one in to get a browser, but i gotta say natty 11.04 IS AWSOME

Ubuntu :: Put A Script In Applications Menu?

Jan 3, 2011

I just downloaded the most recent SuperTuxKart from SourceForge. It is ready-to-run (no compiling, no making). The script that runs the whole thing contains this single line:Code:LD_LIBRARY_PATH=./bin/: bin/supertuxkartOf course, when I double-click on it, I select Run and I'm off racing Tux.But I'd like this to be in the Applications > Games menu.I tried adding a launcher and for the command I just browsed to that script and clicked OK.But when I click the launcher, nothing starts. So what to do? The script has no shebang line, do I put one in? Granted I can just create a desktop shortcut, but I'd really like it to be up there with my other games.

Ubuntu :: Put A Script Of Mine In The Applications Menu?

Jan 30, 2010

I want to put a script of mine in the applications menu , so that when I click on it , it executes itself ...so I created a new application by the name myapplication.desktop in /usr/share/applications/ . But when in GUI mode I traverse down to this directory and click on myapplication.desktop . It gives me an error "myapplication.desktop is not a directory". The crazy part is that when I run it using the terminal freedom@freedom-laptop: /usr/share/applications$ myapplication it runs perfectly well. I can't understand the problem...the script is correct , but I don't know about the error saying "it is not a directory" as all the other files in there are also files and they do run even in graphical mode .

Ubuntu :: Remove Applications From Message Menu?

Jul 17, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04.
Upgraded 8.04 -> 8.10 -> 9.04 -> 9.10 -> 10.04

If I'm perfectly honest, I really don't like the "messaging menu". I don't like the way it's a single point that lumps all sorts of messages together. From a socialite's perspective, I'm sure it's awesome... from a more business orientated perspective, it's cumbersom - the icon is green, does that mean I have an important email, a new post has popped up on my RSS feed (via Liferea), or is it just Bob saying "Hi" in Empathy... I won't know until I click it I would rather have separate notification icons for the individual applications, just like it used to be. Now, I know how to remove application from the Messaging Menu... or at least I thought I did.

I just tried removing 'gwibber' from /usr/share/indicators/messages/applications I have stopped using Empathy (I have used Pidgin/GAIM for a lot longer and I'm stuck in my ways ), so that's gone. I have removed the PPA version of Liferea that had Message Menu integration, so that's gone. I have removed Evolution as I use (and have done so for ~10 years) ClawsMail, so that's gone. The last thing I want to get rid of is Gwibber. I like Gwibber, I just don't want it in the Messaging Menu.
