Software :: Error - Aaron-desktop:~ Aaron$ Sudo Apt-get Install Samba
Jan 19, 2010
I had a samba server set up on my computer, and the config file got messed up. I opted to just to reinstall it. I started with 'apt-get purge samba' and that worked fine. Now, when trying to install samba, I get an error message from dpkg.
Quote:
aaron-desktop:~ aaron$ sudo apt-get install samba
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
samba is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
1 not fully installed or removed.
[Code]...
I get this error even after running the command again to try to finish the installation. When I run '/etc/init.d/samba start', it tells me that starting the samba daemon failed. There is also no config file in my /etc folder.

Few days after installing Ubunto 9.10, during installation of gstreamer, the installation utility got stuck, and with it the whole desktop icons. (I think the gstreamer has nothing to do with it). When I tried to execute some icon, like the terminal, it will not open. After restarting the computer, I get a tty1 login terminal and not the graphical one (tty7). When pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7, nothing happens. It switches to a black screen. "sudo startx", gives some error log. I already reinstalled the X-server, ubuntu desktop and other stuff.
What can be the problem? Is it related to my video card (nvidia 7600 GT)? I didn't install any nvidia specific driver. This happened to me earlier and I reinstalled Ubunto. I think maybe I should move to some other distribution.

tl;dr - sudo make -> operation not permitted, sudo chown -R 777
* -> operation not permitted on some of the files
I am trying to install a library. Sudo make is getting permission denied on file 1, while using regular make I am getting permission denied on file 2. I have noticed some of the directories in the library are under nobody:nogroup. I tried chown and sudo chown, both didn't work. Sudo chown got permission errors, while chown didn't change ALL the files. (operation not permitted once again) Tried sudo su, and working from there, that also did not work. (permission once again). Using lsattr returned "lsattr: Inappropriate ioctl for device While reading flags on".
Code:
sudo chmod -R 777 *
chmod: changing permissions of `Makefile': Operation not permitted
chmod: changing permissions of `Makefile.am': Operation not permitted
chmod: changing permissions of `Makefile.in': Operation not permitted
chmod: changing permissions of `queue.c': Operation not permitted
chmod: changing permissions of `queue.h': Operation not permitted
chmod: changing permissions of `ucutil.h': Operation not permitted
Note the .libs folder not having write permission....
Code:
chmod -R 777 *

My Ubuntu 9.10 works well with the network through samba, but only if I first run -
sudo service samba restart
Then all is fine. I don't understand this. How can I avoid having to do this? Or alternatively where can I best put this command so that it will be run on boot-up.

I am having a problem with Ubuntu 10.04. I was setting up network sharing with Samba. Set up went fine, then I decided to change the hostname.
Following instructions I found on the web, I edited etc/samba/samba.conf to reflect my desired hostname.
Now I have to use superuser to run synaptic or update center. I don't know what else I have "broken".
I would like to change my hostname, if I did it incorrectly for 10.04 please enlighten me.

I recently re-installed my U10.04 and this time around, I added a root user and brought the permission levels of my default user to "Desktop User" as well as elevate the root permissions as explained elsewhere in these forums. Everything went fine until I wanted to "sudo" something from the Desktop User account terminal. I use Skype a lot and preferred to use the repos to get it loaded. Into synaptic where it asked me for the password. I entered the password and I was rejected. Ok, maybe I typed it in wrong. Tried again. The third time I checked in an editor to make sure I wasn't in all-caps. Third time OUT!
Switched user to root and there were no problems. Enabled the partner repos, installed Skype, as well as all the other stuff I use to run my home office. I have missed something, I know I have - perhaps a setting somewhere in the user permissions. I don't want to have to switch user every time I have to make changes to the system. Alternatively, if it's better practise to just leave my system as it is for security purposes I'm not running a server, but I'd like to have my system as secure as reasonably possible without elevating my problem to "paranoid security" level.......

I downloaded the 6.06 version of xubuntu because i have a laptop that doesnt support high graphics mode, and i wasnt able to figure out how to get it to run in low graphics mode. i figured that i would get a version from a while back, and then update it up to the current version. now, to the problem. I was able to upgrade 6.10, but now it says Ubuntu version 8.04 available, so i tried to update it. it gets most of the way through the part where it says calculating or something like that, and then it says: "Can't install 'xubuntu-desktop' It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a bug." with an option that says close at the bottom. when i click close another window pops up that says: Could not calculate the upgrade A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport. Then the window just closes... anything that i could do to get rid of this problem? EDIT: Is there any way to update directly from an .iso file on the desktop?

How to get back to original nouveau driver after failed nvidia driver install?
What probably happened was a wrong nVidia driver install from the repository.. Because never had any problems earlier, but after I installed some nVidia packages, I get this error.
I already tried to remove nvidia driver by
# aptitude purge nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-glx
It was successful.
Then I reinstalled Xorg Nouveau driver and all its denpendencies by
# aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
It was also successful.
But problem still occurs..

I am trying to install OpenSUSE 11.3 on a Dell T3500 Desktop machine. The configuration (related to the problem) of the machine is as follows:
Intel Xeon CPU W3520, 4GB RAM
Intel 82801 SATA RAID Controller
Samsung HD161GJ 160 GB SATA,
Optiarc DVD+-RW AD-7230S
When I try to boot from the OpenSUSE 11.3 x86_64 DVD, I get a curses based screen which says, "Make sure that CD number 1 is in your drive." (with OK and Back buttons). On pressing Back and trying to install again, I get an angry red dialog, which declares, "No repository found."
I tried connecting an external USB DVD drive and then booting from it, then this problem did not come and the install went to start the GUI. But then it could not find the (rather any) hard disk!
We have a set of these identical machines and the problem is fully repeatable on all of them (I tried downloading and burning the DVD image again, that didn't help). The same machines have OpenSUSE 11.1 and 11.2 installed on them and there was no such problem installing those.

I am planning on setting up a 4x1TB RAID5 with mdadm under Ubuntu 9.10. I tried installing mdadm using "sudo apt-get install mdadm", all worked fine except for the following error: Code: Generating array device nodes... /var/lib/dpkg/info/mdadm.postinst: 170: /dev/MAKEDEV: not found failed. The end result is the /dev/md0 device has not been created, as can be seen here:
Code: windsok@beer:~$ mdadm --detail /dev/md0 mdadm: cannot open /dev/md0: No such file or directory After googling, I found the following bug which describes the issue: [URL] However it was reported way back in April 2009, and it does not look like it will be fixed any time soon, so I was wondering if anyone knows a workaround for this bug, to get me up and running?

Seems like this is a running issue. also, sudo returns "The value user is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported" kdeusu just makes a noise and returns nothing.. In the past i had a workaround of using nautilus, but, nautilus seems to be missing from jessie repo (same for gnome files).
[URL] ... ssoo... this happened and it seems to be going somewhere, but, i can't really make sense of it, and there was no solution..
Also found this [URL] .... and the pathnames should be fine but i don't want to go around arbitrarly entering commands
There was also [URL] .... which only mentions using kdesu which... doesn't really 'exist' anymore.

I'm having a strange issue with the PATH variable when running the command 'sudo su'. When executing this command the PATH variable changes. No problems there, but it changes to:
Code:
Looking at this, there are two weird entries (//sbin and //bin) which should both start '/usr' instead. I'm not sure how I've managed to change this, or how a piece of software I'm using has done it (more likely it was me I expect), but could anyone suggest which file to look in to correct it? If it makes a difference the machine is running CentOS 5.
