Slackware :: Get List Of Packages Not In Base System
Nov 2, 2010Is it possible to get a list of packages installed on the system that are not a part of Slackware (i.e. take all installed on system, take all packages that originally come with slack, find difference)? Worthy to mention is that I use slackpkg and run -current.

Slackware :: Slackware 13.37 Doesn't Determine Monitor Size Correctly
Jun 12, 2011I have a display problem since updating to Slackware 13.37. Everything was fine on Slackware 13.1, but when I switched to 13.37 some piece of software came up with the wrong monitor size. I have a 1600x900 LCD monitor but the X screen came up as 1024x768 with blackness on either side of it. Under Slackware 13.1 the X screen came up as 1600x900 as it should without any prompting from me; I didn't even have an Xorg.conf file. I tried using the Xorg.conf file which was needed and work for older Slackwares, eg 12.*, but it didn't work. (Saying it didn't work is a gross understatement! That old Xorg.conf completely screwed up mouse, keyboard, and monitor; the screen was flashing and nothing worked. The only way to get control back was to SSH into the machine from my laptop and reboot. Killing the X server via that SSH console did NOT the flashing or get me back to my console login; only reboot worked.)
I find I can get the screen to be the right size manually by going through KDE's "System Settings" --> "Display and Monitor" --> "Size & Orientation", then disabling "LVDS1" and setting VGA1 to 1600x900. The size of my odd-sized monitor is being correctly detected for the "Auto" choice. Upon reboot LVDS1 stays disabled but VGA1 reverts to 1024x768 so I have to do this each time.I've done some search of the on-line literature regarding the error messages I am seeing in the boot log.
People are suggesting changing all kinds of things to alleviate the side effects of the "conflicting" error message above, even modifying GRUB parameters (which won't work for me since I use LILO).So, I have a manual work around which I must do each time I log in. Does someone know how I can get X or KDE to force 1600x900 upon start (while Linux/X/whoever find and fix the problem) or does someone know of a real fix?
Ubuntu :: List Folders And Subfolders With Size?
Jan 2, 2010I want to list my folders and subfolders (recursive) and also show the size of the files in terminal. I started using this:

I got everything but not the size of the folders.
Then I tried this:

du -h --max-depth=1 > test.txt
Suppose to show me everything, but I can't see subfolders. And this command do not accept recursive. How can I show the size of the files and folders like the second command, but including the subfolders?

Oct 7, 2010I am in the process of customizing my desktop, and I have run into a problem. As a programmer, I will invariable end up with tons of windows open. I would like to expand the gnome-panel's Window List's y size to allow more applications to show without being crunched together.
That's the way the desktop currently looks, notice the tiny Window List in the top left. That's as big as it gets. I want to expand it all along the entire left side. I have a feeling the answer is in gconf-editor, but i just can't find the right field to modify.
General :: List The Removed Rpm Packages Used By Rpm -e ?
Jun 23, 2011OS: RHEL / CentOS If I use "yum" to add / erase packages, OS will log the info to file /var/log/yum.log.
But if use "rpm -e" to remove a package, there is no related log file to show which rpm package got earsed. I have to run "rpm -qa > /tmp/$TIME", and then diff the /tmp/$TIME file to get the difference.
Is there is command to show the erased packages (erased by using rpm -e)?
Slackware :: Static Libraries - Why Aren't They Shipped In Official Slackware Packages
Aug 12, 2010I noticed that the official Slackware packages don't contain static libraries. The SlackBuild scripts from slackbuilds.org or from Slackware DVD usually contain --disable-static option to prevent building the .a file. And if configure script doesn't allow such option, the .a file is deleted before the package is created.I am wondering what is the reason for that? Is it just the matter of conserving disk space? Are there also other reasons?

I thought there exists a built-in function that gives total size of a list object in byte. So using the function produces 1 for a1, 3 for a2. I haven't found such function or module yet.
Debian :: List Only Non-automatic Installed Packages?
Apr 20, 2016How do you list only installed packages that were not installed automatically? I see in aptitude that it will list whether they were installed automatically or not, but it is hard to find them because the are a lot more installed automatically than non-automatically.

Sep 1, 2011I get annoyed sometimes that from one Fedora release to another, some programs get renamed or put into different packages. Examples:
* Gnome's volume control applet. Used to be provided by gnome-media, now it's moved to control-center. Worse, the command itself was renamed from gnome-volume-control-applet to gnome-sound-applet, so I couldn't even try a `yum provides` search to locate it.
* Gnome's Disk Usage Analyzer tool. Used to be in a package by itself, baobab. Now it's provided by gnome-utils.
Is there a wiki or something where the full list of all renamed/repackaged programs can be found? I'm not a Gnome desktop user, so, while I'm sure all the packages I like from Gnome are just there out-of-the-box for most users, it doesn't help me very much. The volume control applet for example is extremely useful for other desktop environments (and Gnome itself really doesn't have much need for it anyway, since they have their own built into the window shell).
