Slackware :: Logging Out By Itself?
Jan 26, 2011
A week ago (or two weeks ago) I noticed that my computer is logged out even though I left it logged on overnight. when I got up in the morning, instead I find a user logged in fluxbox, I saw that I was in front of the screen to log in.that night only ktorrent was running (turn off after downloading and something like that is disabled) and i adjusted command "at" that in the 9 am starts "rxvt + mplayer" that will let the online radio station. later the same happened to me, however during the day, as I watched a site in Firefox. ktorrent was turned off.
following couple of days nothing has happened (though I did not use computer to much), until tonight. this time I wrote something in Leafpad and my firefox and ktorrent was on.i'm sending you from /var/log messages and dmesg, but if you need something more i will upload that too, because i saved all logs.also, in addition there is a screenshot of programs that I recently installed on the computer (you will see the dates) - software I took from SlackBuild and made packages.i am using slim and gdm...have slackware 13.1, kernel 2.6.33.4, fluxbox 1.1.1.

decided to fool around making a good quality, totally configurable, firewall script for Slackware, which also logs incoming dropped packets.Just copy the code below into your favourite text editor and save the file as rc.firewall then copy it into your /etc/rc.d/ directory (as root user). After setting up the config section in the script, run these commands;
chmod 755 /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall
/etc/rc.d/rc.firewall start
Voila!
[code]....

KDE 3.5.4Kernel 2.6.17.13Slack 11A few weeks ago, my system locked up and I had to do a hard reboot (hold down power button). When I powered back on, the programs (KDE System Guard, Konsole window, MythFrontEnd) that were running at the time of the lockup appeared again. I exited System Guard and the Konsole window and then restarted normally. However, they keep appearing in the same spot when I log in to KDE. I looked through some logs in /var/log, but I don't see anything I haven't seen before.I deleted the /home/myuser/.kde/cache-hostname folder and its contents while in single-user mode, but that had no impact

I'm still learning about bash scripting. Not too long ago, with a lot of help from folks on this forum, I developed the following script to keep Slackware -stable up-to-date:
Code:

I've tried to find a solution on other posts but can't find one.Karmic keeps logging me out automatically. Sometimes there are less than five minutes between logouts.Initially I upgraded from Jaunty, so, in case that was at fault, I then did a clean install, but that hasn't worked either.I've been hoping one of the updates will fix it, but no joy ye

Why does Ubuntu 9.10 keep logging me out? This only started about a week ago and it seems to be getting worse. I have not installed any new hardware or software. The only thing that's been installed recently are the routine Ubuntu updates. I just got logged out 4 times in less than 10 minutes while I was trying to type a reply to a message in another forum. I had to reboot into WinXP to post this message and finish my reply in the other forum. This is getting REAL annoying and I can't find any solutions. Someone suggested that uninstalling Compiz would fix it so I did that, but it seems to have gotten worse. I've really liked Ubuntu until now, but I'm on the verge of trashing it if this problem can't be fixed.

I'm trying to install F15 for a friend, (works great for me btw) and after getting to the desktop and sometimes during install set up, it just keeps logging off by itself and then back to the desktop. This also happened on my computer a couple of times, but I managed to get it installed. Is this a known bug? Is there anything that can be done about it? Also, is there a fedora iso that has all current updates built in? He really wants F15, but we are stuck right now. and is there an "alternate" cd for fedora without gui install?

I have an ACER TravelMate 6003LMI with openSUSE 11.3 and I updated now to KDE 4.5. So far, the update went fine, but now I cannot login anymore. openSUSE 11.3 boots up to the login prompt, I'm logging in, the KDE progress bar reaches about 75% and then it hangs up.

I've installed OpenSUSE on my server and want to set ssh to log every command, which is send to system over it.
I've found this in my sshd_config:
I guess that both of those directives has to be uncommented, but I'd like to log every command, not only authorization (login/logout via SSH). I just want to know, if someone breaks into my system, what did he do.

how I could run a command before logging on, in addition, the command needs to run as root.
This is going back to some few weeks months ago, shortly after I upgraded to Karmic Koala. Since then, the sound device doesn't work automatically. I donno why, but alsa doesn't seem to detect the audio device.
Once I have booted the machine, I can access sound by doing:
Code:
sudo alsa force-reload
Needless to say, that's pretty annoying and I posted two or three threads to find a solution to this problem, but never got anywhere.
Failing that I get the issue resolved, running the 'alsa force-reload' command at boot up, so that when I'm logged in, it's already working.

I installed Ubuntu Studio 9.0.4., as a VMWare virtual machine in OSX to check it out. I specified a password to 'root', did not add any other users. (I run the whole show as "admin" in OSX and Windows as well. If some kid wants my files - The mp3's are under "Music".)
Anyhow, the Ubuntu Studio install went through, the nifty login splash screen came up. I tried to login in a "root" with my password, and got the following thing into my face:
"The system administrator is not allowed to login from this screen"
OK, so what "other" login screen does Ubuntu have, then?

Ever since I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop, I've been having this problem. Every now and then, for seemingly no reason at all, the screen will go black and after a few seconds I find myself at the login screen. I've kept track of when it happens and there is seemingly no pattern to it; sometimes it will happen when I'm watching a video, sometimes it just happens when I'm browsing the internet, and sometimes it happens when I'm not doing anything.

I am not referring to the bash history file. I am referring to the system log file. All of my console activity (letter for letter) is being stored in the system log. It's my understanding that version 4.1 of bash is where this behavior first started but was originally optional. I don't like it and I want to stop it. I am using a current version of jessie with bash 4.3 and I can find no way of turning it off
Monitoring the activities of users may be necessary .for admins in a business environment but this is a home computer and I consider this kind of tracking intrusive and unwanted.
I first noticed this with the journal system log and mistakenly though it had to do with journal so I removed the journal system and installed dsyslog which has the same behavior.
Perhaps debian should offer two versions of bash. It's my understanding that this is configured in a header before compiling.

I wanted to make my boot logging pretty hence used this shell script from As given in the instructions therein, I just copied the shell script in /etc/ directory with the name lsb-base-logging.sh and gave the shell script executable rights. ($ sudo chmod +x lsb-base-logging.sh) . After booting up with the new boot script I did not like it. (seemed more ugly than the default option). Now while I have removed the executable bit its still showing the ugly (or pretty as you look/feel it) modified bootup./etc$ ll lsb-base-logging.sh -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1337 Aug 16 18:48 lsb-base-logging.shDo I need to completely remove the script for the default boot to come back.

I'm currently using Fedora 11 Gnome and I installed the Kde core desktop. However, when I logged out there was no way I could change the session. I installed kdm, but after searching on google I found out that i need to change /etc/sysconfig/desktop to make kdm the default login manager. However, such a file did not exist. How can I change my session?

I just installed Fedora 15 over a previous F14 installation. (My /home and /usr/local directories were installed as separate partitions, and the system dual-boots with Windows on another partition.) Setting up the users seemed to work normally. However, when I logged in, instead of starting normally, it went back to the login screen.I rebooted and made it go into terminal mode on startup (appending 3 to the kernel arguments). I was able to log in from the terminal. When I tried using startx, it failed. I tried to use "yum update" but I had no internet connection, so it did not work.
The next step was to try and get a connection to my router using iwconfig and wpa_supplicant, but that also failed. I tried reinstalling Fedora from the LiveCD, but the problem persisted.

I am pondering on what would be any implications in logging in via SSH as root?Surely SSH is safe or am I kidding myself and falling for the unwary ethic of logging into a remote Linux box as root?I discovered some open ports remotely on the linux box, and decided to login as root to edit a configuration file to shut off the ports, hence my questioning in whether logging in as root...another point, since SSH is 'supposedly secure', there should not be any implications or am I kidding myself!??? Would it be better to login as normal user then su from there?
Ok, to make things even more interesting, what if its a bog standard generic linux distribution with no suid programs etc, then what happens...take that out of the picture, and say, for editing a configuration file...hackers are not going to see that are they, otherwise by the sound of the answers, it is putting an impression that hackers can see the traffic the minute you login as root?! Otherwise why bother using SSH? I mean, surely, SSH was designed to replace telnet and thereby increase protection...as we all know back in the early 90's before the internet became publicly available, that there was indeed sysadmins dialing in to private networks or telnet'ting into a remote system as root....

I have a program for my Nokia E52 smartphone called Joikuspot. It creates a ad-hoc network and acts as internet gateway. But Ubuntu has a really hard time logging on to the network. Most times it takes several minutes before the network even shows up in the network manager applet, and when it does it might take many tries before the computer get a DHCP address from the phone. When it finally does happen, everything works great and the connection is fast and stable. There is no problems when i try to access the ad-hoc network with a XP machine. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Inspirion 6400 with proprietary Broadcom STA driver for the network card.

I need to create a simple way to change the language of my system without logging out. I would like to make it so that a user can just click on something and the language of the whole system will change.
I've disabled the traditional gdm gui login screen by adding the keyword 'text' to the kernel line so that it boots to a command line. I then start gnome by using startx and I've noticed that I can log out of gnome back into the command line, then change the environment LANG variable to the new desired language, run startx again and everything is in the new desired language.
I need a programmable way to only restart gnome(not a reboot) so that I can make a script that a user can just click on and it will set the LANG variable then restart gnome(preferably preserving all open applications, but if not, doesn't matter).

I am running a remote login server where I have multiple users. I am using No Machine NX for the remote login software. I also used Ubuntu Tweak and did some editing in gconf-editor in order to lockdown the machine. In the end the user has some files on their desktop they can view and one panel with a logoff button. This system has been in place for about 2 years now and running pretty smoothly.
I am not sure if this is an NX problem or Gnome problem. I have just one user, all of a sudden, that has nothing on the desktop and no panel when they login. The system was set for each user to have their /home folder as their desktop folder. I am not sure where to start trouble shooting this. I have looked a quite at few of the gconf.xml fiels for the user, but do not see anything out of the ordinary (comparing to other user's gconf.xml files)
