Ubuntu :: Timestamp Format - Shell Versus Cron Job
Jun 16, 2010
Setup: 10.04 server with "bash" as /bin/sh
When I run "ls -l" in a shell I get the following format:
Code:
-rw-r----- 1 syslog adm 0 2010-06-13 06:53 /var/log/user.log
Whereas if "ls -l" executes from a cron job the format is:
Code:
-rw-r----- 1 syslog adm 0 Jun 13 06:53 /var/log/user.log
Notice the different time format. Now I could fix this by changing the cron job to
Code:
ls -l --time-style=+%Y-%m-%d %H:%M ...
but I'm interested in knowing why this behavior occurs. What's different between the cron job and the shell?

I'm using VSFTPD on my office LAN for one simple task: to receive-and send - installation images created with Ghost4Linux. Until recently, my main LAN server ran on CentOS, but I decided to migrate it to Slackware (nicer release policy ).
What I usually do is create an 'install' user who can login to FTP, but not on the system. Here's an example of what I used to do on my CentOS setup:
Code:
# mkdir -p -m 0700 /home/ftp/install
# groupadd install
# useradd -d /home/ftp/install -g install -s /sbin/nologin install
# chown -R install:install /home/ftp/install
# passwd install
The relevant bits in vsftpd.conf looked like this on the CentOS server:
Code:
...
anonymous_enable=NO
...
userlist_enable=YES
userlist_deny=NO
userlist_file=/etc/vsftpd/user_list
...
Then I only had to create the /etc/vsftpd/user_list file and put a single line in it to allow the newly created user:
Code:
install Now I've tried to get the same behaviour on Slackware, and I succeeded more or less, except for one thing. There's no way my 'install' user can login to FTP when his default shell is set to '/sbin/nologin' (or '/bin/false'). Only when I change the 'install' users' default shell to a "real" shell like '/bin/bash', he's able to login.
Here's a little practical demonstration of what's happening:
Code:
$ lftp localhost
lftp localhost:~> user install
Mot de passe :
[code]...

All my cron jobs are configured to email output to [URL] Text content comes through, just fine. I have several cron jobs that output HMTL, however cron's output email displays the html tags as-is as text, instead of html. example: <br> Anyone got lucky being able to send cron output emails in html format (either by configuring fedora or through command line)? I have tried the following command lines in fedora crontab manager with no luck
TRY 1
CONTENT_TYPE=text/html /usr/bin/php /full/path/myphp.php | mail -s 'email subject' myemail@mydomain.com
(cron executes, but sends email as a text email, not html email)
TRY 2
/usr/bin/php /full/path/myphp.php | mail -s 'email subject' myemail@mydomain.com

I have a script that I would like to run using 'cron'. I want to use 'scp' to transfer files from one machine to another. I have set up the SSH keys on both machines. When I run the script from bash terminal, it works flawlessly. But when I schedule a 'cron' job to run the same script, 'scp' does not transfer the files.
'Return value' is 0 when the script is run from bash directly. But when it runs from 'cron', the 'Return value' is 1. That means, surely, that 'scp' is throwing an error. I don't know which error is being encountered. Could anybody let me know how to make it work?

I'm creating a script all worked fine in the command line. But not work in the cron. Below you could see the script
[Code]...
So far I found when I use corn following part not working, nothing goes to the processedfiles file. ls -l /var/lct/mou2/processed | grep $TODAY | awk '{print " " $8}' > /home/trans/mou/processedfiles ls -l /var/lct/mou2/processed | grep $YESTERDAY | awk '{print " " $8}' >> /home/trans/mou/processedfiles This work perfect in command line. Corn job and command line use by the same user.

I have a cron job that runs a shell script. But it only runs the first line of that shell script and not the rest of the file. I'm a little stumped as to why. If I run the shell script manually, it runs and executes every single line as it should. I think I must need some additional syntax to make this run correctly?
Here is the crontab ...
Code:
root@kchlinux:~/macs# crontab -l
# m h dom mon dow command

This is regarding the KDE application Basket:
I want to create a shell script that I can run as a cron job to do automated backups. how to proceed. I have the source code and have pulled out the backup source files. Here is the link for the source code. The download is at the bottom of this page. The backup files can be found in the src folder listed as backup.cpp and backup.h [URL]
If someone can do this, I believe it will make a nice addition to the Basket application for all.
Also I am not running Kubuntu I am running Karmic 9.10 64 bit

I've been having a bit of trouble running a shell script with cron. A friend of mine does a community radio show and the station has a live stream but no podcasts, so I've set up a script to record the stream and encode it as an mp3 while I'm away using mplayer and lame -that's what I'm trying to do anyway.
Here's the script, but it doesn't seem to run- at least, I don't see any of the files it should be outputing, would they be in the cron.weekly directory (where I have the script) or in my home directory?
#This is a script to record 'The Unnamed Show'
#it will record the show from the live stream, then convert the output #to an MP3
#Finally, it will delete any files no longer required HOME=/home/byron/

Im having some difficulties with running a shell script from cron which I am unable to resolve for almost 2 days now.
For testing purposes, im trying this with simple shell script test.sh with chmod 777
This script is located at /var
When I type /var/test.sh it runs perfectly and prints asdasdasd
When I type /var/test.sh > /home/log it writes asdasdasd to /home/log - works
The problem occurs whenever I add it as a cron job to var/spool/cron/crontab/root
There is: 11 10 * * * /var/test.sh > /home/log - however, at 10:11 there is no file at /home/log
Cron as a service works, forexample, every day at 4 am it makes this backup sshpass -p xxxx rsync -avz -e ssh root@x.x.10.7:/data/backup/ /home/backups/isp_admin
However,
doesnt makes the folder
Where is the catch?

I have an Ubuntu server running Couch Potato, Sick Beard and Sabnzbdplus. Everything "works" pretty well in a sense that CP and SB push the NZB's to Sabnzbdplus, but Sab crashes regularly (haven't found the solution or the cause for this problem, so if you have some advice regarding that, it's welcome).To counter this problem (Sab crashing) I have a script written which checks if Sab is runnning and if it isn't start it:
Code:
bart@Pyro:~$ cat CheckSabRunning.sh

I was wondering if there is any software to logically reformat shell scripts- for example, like HTMLTIDY does with HTML? or PERLTIDY does with Perl?The reason I'm asking is I am going through a shell script with a 3 page IF-then block.. and what seems like a million smaller if-then blocks within this bigger block. And nothing is formatted, indented, commented to make it easier to figure out.

Code:
ps -A | grep apt
showed it for a long time,
Code:
sudo tcpdump tcp
showed communication with canonical sites,
but:
Code:

did not show any apt using CPU

I put in my cron entries to run my backup script which rsyncs my data to my 2nd drive, however on a hunch I checked my backup drive which mounts automatically via fstab and I realize it had not ran in a while. I checked cron and there were no entries for it. I got to wondering if I should ever be worried about a cron update coming down and over-writing my existing cron file with the backup entries in it to run.

I have added some executable scripts to /etc/cron.daily but don't get the stdout/stderr output from them as mail (or anywhere else I have found). At least one of them is running (because I can see that it has added a file to the disk).
The peculiar thing is that I do get the output from /etc/cron.daily/0logwatch (part of the logwatch package) as an email each day.
The MAILTO line in /etc/crontab is "MAILTO=root" (unchanged from default). Same for /etc/anacrontab.
I do have an alias at the end of /etc/aliases which redirects root's mail to my own account, but this alias works fine for mail I send manually. (It also appears to work fine for the output from the file /etc/cron.daily/0logwatch.)

I have set up a cron in /var/spool/cron/root
*/15 * * * * /usr/bin/phplist.sh
I can see in /var/log/cron that it is running every 15 minutes but it has no effect. It is not doing the commands in the bash script.
If I run /usr/bin/phplist.sh right in the shell it works great.

I recently hired a new tech guy to start managing our servers. In doing this I went ahead and upgraded all the servers. It has been awhile now since I sent him the details of the new server and the last time I talked to him he was joking around with one of the other clients not realizing how long it took.
I know on other server moves, my old guy could have everything setup and running in a couple days as a good amount of time is waiting for the data to copy over. I am starting to wonder if this guy is going to try and throw a huge bill at me, so I would like to know what hes doing on the server with time stamps just so I can get a idea of how much time he has been logged into the server. Does this server OS have anything like this built in?

I have a directory containing files and symlinks to files elswhere. I make a copy of the directory like this:
cp -rp dir/* new_dir
The files in new_dir have their original timestamps, but the symlinks have the current time. touch -t does not operate on the symblink but on the files they reference. Is there a way to set the timestamp of the symlink to a time in the past?

How do I compare the timestamp of two files? I tried this but it doesn't work:
file1time=`stat -c %Y fil1.txt`
file2time=`stat -c %Y file2.txt`
[code]....
I printed both the time stamps, in order and it gives me
1273143480
1254144394
./script.sh: line 13: [1273143480: command not found
So basically if comparision is not working, I guess. Or if there is any other nice way than what I am doing, please let me know.
Edit: There was no space in between if, so changing it to this works:
if [ $file1time -gt $file2time ]
