For those of us in the US, last weekend we started daylight saving time (1 hour ahead). When I booted up my laptop on Sunday morning, the clock did not automatically update. I have a script to sync my clock with a public time server, so it was no big deal to run it. I did think it was odd that Slackware did not automatically adjust the clock.
My question is this: Is this expected behavior?
I have a linux (Slackware) machine and the time/date is like, June 23rd 2003, 10:00am (It's 11 here) and I am not able to set the time to have it correct. I change the timezome to Montreal but the time is still wrong.
Is there a way to force it to sync with my domain controler or even another online NTP server?
I can't find how to do this.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am currently running KDE4.4.1 from AlienBob, and now with the change to BST I noticed that my clock hasn't changed. So I go to change it through SystemSettings and it shows a message thus:-

This happens as both normal user and root. Googling around seems to suggest this error is tied to a Kauth/PolicuKit/polkit problem, which aren;t provided yet in Slackware as far as I am aware.
I just upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04, and it doesn't seem like there is much diffrent, shouldnt I have a desktop like this:
when mine looks like this (the same it was for 10.10):
Do I have to enable something? I went to System>About Ubuntu. And I am running 11.04 so I'm not sure why it is like it is.
A friend working in HPC environments commented me that he had an issue regarding the use of the malloc() function.What issue?He told me that he has had cases in where malloc() instead of returning a NULL pointer on failure, simply didn't change the original value of the pointer it was trying to use for allocation, thus forcing him to initialize pointers to be allocated with malloc() to NULL, so that he could be sure that if malloc() fails, a test for NULL would make sense.

You'll probably need to log out and back in again for the profile scripts to add the KDE3 stuff to your $PATH and $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS. When you log back in, KDE3 should start when you run X. Unlike LXDE, this install didn't automatically create a menu entry for gdm. Everything seems to be right, but I can't get the gdm entries I've tried to work. Could somebody who has also installed 3.5.10 kindly post the correct file contents?
I have just install both fedora 12 and slackware 13 on my laptop I did not install lilo because fedora uses grub I am able to use slackware by using the the DVD and booting from the command prompt I have attached my grub .conf file also when i boot from cd the command is as follows

It looks,slackware is taking too much time to boot. It's starting daemons at boot time.
What are those daemons that i can stop at boot time to increase booting time?

I've been running arch linux, with my clock set to UTC with no problem. Recently I installed slackware on a different partition. During the setup I chose to set my clock to 'local time' instead of UTC by accident. Now in slackware my clock shows the wrong time. Also in arch it shows the same wrong time.
I booted back into slackware and ran pkgtool to enter the setup again, and changed my time to UTC. But this makes no difference. My clock is still wrong in both slackware and arch. Do I need to reboot after changing my clock settings in slackware before it takes effect? how the clock or the setup works.
I want to configure a VPN over the Internet.I installed the 'openvpn' package, generated the key file, transfered it by a secure way to the client, and setted up the configuration file.
So, in that configuration file I input the IP addresses of the tunneled interfaces. Both IPs are static in the tunnel.
Then, I've heard somewhere that I can assign a dynamic configuration IP for the client. I do this registering a range.
Well, when I tried to change static IP to dynamic IP (changing '192.168.0.2' to '192.168.0.0/24') in the configuration file, the OpenVPN didn't work.
Obviously I don't know what I'm doing, and I really, don't believe that simply changing the IP will make it work, but I tried.
I hope I explained my problem as well.

In client I execute the 'openvpn' without the '--daemon' parameter.Then I want that my client uses a IP in a range (192.168.0.0/24, for example), instead of a static IP (192.168.0.2).I also thought to use a DHCP server, but I'm not sure that will work.

I would expect such neat OS to recognize all those local settings based on my location, but that's not the case. It seems that Debian follows locale settings by set language (which is en_us in my case, as I guess in majority uses) or this format is default in any case

View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to transfer files from one comp to another. Its a few hundred gigs. Since the pc crashed i am using knoppix to access the drive and sharing over samba.
I'm using robocopy to copy the files. But i have a small problem with sleep. Every 30mins or maybe an hour knoppix goes to sleep and my transfer stops. How do i change the time or disable it completely? so i dont have to tap a key every 30mins
How can I get the last time any of the files in a directory or its subdirectories has changed?
e.g
Dir - changed 1/1/1
Sub Dir 1 - changed 2/1/1
Sub Dir 2 - changed 3/1/1
File 1 - changed 10/1/1
File 2 - change 5/1/1
The output for this for Dir should be 10/1/1 (File 1 was the last modified one). Getting the last file name to be modified is a bonus but isn't necessary.
I have a Lucid machine that is driving me bonkers by constantly locking the desktop screen, forcing me to enter my password each time to unlock it. I have looked everywhere but cannot find out where to change this setting.

I would even like to switch it off, if possible. Thanks for any help you may have, as I can't seem to find mention of it anywhere, and I think a 10-second wait is silly, having been accustomed to adjusting LILO to any delay time I liked.

View 5 Replies View Relatedi am using squid proxy on centos 5.x release with stable version. during installation time i fixed date time region.it was basicaly gmt +3:00 hours. so everything was fixed, now since past few days every 24 hours it change its time automaatically. this looks like it take update somewhere from internet or internally something is mess up.could someone guide me how to fixed permanantly date time. even either restart the machine or passing 24 hours it do never change it. etc

I have Linux debian 7.7.0 i386-amd64 under VBox 4.3.20 and here is the problem:::
When I open the menu from Linux's top-right corner and click SHUT DOWN..., it shows the dialog with choices, and that Linux guest will automatically shutdown after 60 seconds and I need to change that delay value to 3 seconds. Of course I could just re-click Shut Down -button again, but I don't want to do it. Period.
