Did a fresh install of 13.1 using lvm for the first time. I created swap in the logical volume but forgot to add it when I ran through the install. Do I need to just add an entry to my fstab and then swapon -va?

I install Wicd and find that Python is a dependency. What is the easiest way for me to make this happen? View 5 Replies View RelatedI've installed Fedora to dual-boot with Ubuntu. I'm using /dev/sda1 for Ubuntu, and /dev/sda3 for Fedora. Unfortunately, I unchecked the "Install boot loader" checkbox, so I still have the Ubuntu boot loader but no way to boot Fedora. While still logged into the Fedora Live CD, how can I install the Fedora boot loader to /dev/sda3 and set it up to chainload from Ubuntu's GRUB menu? (I'm thinking it would be 'grub-install /dev/sda3' as root, and then just edit /dev/sda1:/boot/grub/menu.lst, but I'd like confirmation.)

Is there any way to automate the trial of different passwords? I remember the basic structure of what the password was so if somehow I could automate trying passwords from a list I may have a good change to recover my volume.
If/when I do remember the password. Is there a way to change the password on an encrypted volume? I need to make it something I will remember for sure... or write it down somewhere safe..

Somewhere during my installation, I forgot to make my Windows partition (as well as a drive that linux associates with Windows) writable. Is there any way to make them writable, without re-installing everything?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI got two problems. Problem 1 the sound is kind of sketchy..I thought the sound card got blown. But I heard my friend got sound on it again before we put Slackware on. Next I left him to install it while I went to class. I don't think he put a swap in. The computer is painfully slow and it can't even switch users because it looks like the ram got murdered or something. My Questions are how to test / get a working sound card. I did do the alsamixer I think the command is and turn the volume levels up yet I don't hear anything.
As far as the swap partions I don't there is one but I am not sure how to look / check to where if he made it to small or not at all.
I need to re-install Etch recently but forgot to backup /var/lib/dpkg folder, I know there's archive server provides old packages, but packages from www.debian-multimedia.org does not. I have tried its mirror sites but it seems they had removed the old packages from Etch and earlier releases.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm using slackware about a month now and two days ago I checked to see the usage of my RAM and I saw that there was no swap, no used, no total, nothing! (how can this be?) swap -s returned nothing, I checked fstab and there was swap there so I entered the line about swap:
"UUID=6ea9269a-6bf7-4486-b481-a54dd3bde314 none swap sw 0 0"
I believe it' s correct. I checked after restart with "free" and the total was ok but used is 0. I copied about 5 GB to see what would happen and still nothing. RAM was nearly full but still no swap used!
While this is the second notebook I've had the luxury of running Slackware on, I have never used the the suspend to RAM / swap functions so all of this is new to me. With this new notebook and new installation of Slackware 13.1 I decided to give it a shot as it's definitely a power sucker. The machine is a Lenovo W510 with an NVidia graphics card running KDE. When I tell KDE to go to Sleep (RAM suspension) it looks like it does so properly by blanking the screen and pushing things to RAM. Is there a way to verify that Sleep is working? Anyway after unlocking the system my mouse pointer is no longer visible, however it is still active as I can hover over items to reveal their popups.
At this point none of my conky displays are transparent anymore, nor are they actively displaying stats. The windows I have set to display with 88% opacity are no longer as such and are completely opaque. It is as if all the custom window settings are ignored. If I move the the mouse towards the bottom of the screen the screen starts to go crazy with this rainbow of colors across the top of the screen and the only way to get out of this is to press Ctrl-ESC to bring up a System Activity window. I have not tried Hibernate yet as I would like to get this resolved first. Is Slackware 13.1 supposed to be able to Sleep/Hibernate with no special configuration and creation of scripts provided that the system can handle these functions?

Currently running Slackware64 13.1 on a notebook and for the most part everything works fine. Only problem I am running into is with hibernation, where sometimes it will go into hibernation without a hitch and sometimes it will stall after blanking the screen and never turning off. For the most part pm-suspend.log looks fine every time, whether it goes into hibernation or not. My current system has 12GB of RAM and my swap partition is roughly 12GB. For the most part my RAM usage right before going into hibernation is always under 1.5GB with maybe 600MB floating in the swap partition. Could the size of my swap partition be too small even if RAM usage is nowhere near max?

Well, I had Ubuntu installed and used installed slackware, and the boot hangs when I try to boot into the latest kernel; it says it's waiting for a UUID = (some random characters. I tried to enter a recovery mode for the latest kernel, and I couldn't even log in as root or my log in.

When I installed slackware, I picked KDE because of the convenient app suite. I don't wish to uninstall kde but I'd like to be able to pick which environment I use when I swap to a GUI. While installing slackware64-current, setup cannot find swap space. This is an extreme case pushing limits with a huge GPT partition table. So there is probably some limit on the number of partitions, or partition number, the swap search looks for. Of 41 partitions I made scattered around the number range from 1 to 128, the swap space exists as partition 90. Maybe the problem is it can only check partitions 1-15 because 16 and beyond have to use a different device major number? When I do proceed with the install, /dev/sda90 is listed as a choice. FYI, so many partitions is planning ahead for a multi-boot system. The rest of the install went OK.

I've currently got 2x 1TB drives in the box allocated as raid1 for the OS and everything I want to run on the machine. I'd like to think my question/needs are fairly straight forward, I am buying 2x 2TB drives to add to this machine as it serves as a NAS box for one of its roles. I'd like these in raid0 as the data that would be going on it is not that important to me. The question is, after adding the new drives to the system, once I boot up, what do I need to do to the system to get the drives added and working sucessfully as a single raid0 volume that I can then samba share out to my network. To clarify, I understand a little of mdadm as I've used it to raid1 my existing setup when I installed, and I'm fine with the samba bit after.

I have been following Alien Bob's README_CRYPT.TXT on the install disk and playing around with LUKS and LVM as highlighted in the section Combining LUKS and LVM. I got this working following the examples in the readme however I now wish to add another volume to the volume group. I have got this working and extended the group with an encrypted volume so it's now bigger. I want the two included physical volumes in the volume group (which are both encrypted) to be opened on bootup.
As it is now I am prompted for a password for the first physical volume (the passwords are set to be the same) and that opens and boots the volume. It has a problem with the second PV I have added and doesn't open this. There are errors on boot up about this and pvdisplay give this:

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been searching all over trying to figure out how to get my Slackware box to detect my 2 PCMCIA wired nics. Specs are:
Dell Latitude CPi (old, I know...)
Compaq 10/100 PC Card (series NNB108)
Xircom "Credit Card" Ethernet 10/100+ and Modem 56 (model: CEM56-100.
Slackware 11 (kernel 2.6.21.5)
Both cards work under Ubuntu 9.04 on the same hardware so I know they are both working and linux compatible.
Checking the /var/log/messages file I see entries when I insert or remove the card. States that a PCMCIA card has been added/removed however other than the /messages log entry there is no other activity that I notice. No lights on the NIC card dongles either. Most of the reading I've done on the net indicate that there should be a /etc/pcmcia/network.opts file but I don't even have the /etc/pcmcia directory. Sure would appreciate some guidance on where to go or what to do to get these two PCMCIA nics up and running.

But some programs are dependant on other which i was not able to install, they call it dependencies.
