Slackware :: Cannot Change Link_power_management_policy?
Mar 4, 2011
Netbook Acer Aspire One AOD255 running Slackware 13.1. Kernel vmlinuz-huge-2.6.33.4-smpPowertop recommends, for saving power, the following change.
Code:
echo min_power > /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/link_power_management_policy
However, on my machine, I don't have "host0" but host2, host3, host4 and host5, hence I run the following in

One of the things that I don't like about Windoze is the apparent assumption on the part of the program designers that they know what is best for the user. Thus, it is either very difficult or just impossible to do some things in Windoze. (try setting it up with zero security some time!). On the other hand, my experience with Linux has been that if there is something that I want to do there has generally been a way to do it and there have been very few, if any, roadblocks. Not so now with kde 4. In the past I have been able to set up an oft-used app on the desktop and change its icon to whatever I want. This I cannot seem to do now. As far as I can see it is either impossible or extremely well hidden. Has this very simple and useful thing been removed and if so, why? For your info, I'm using Slack 13.0 with the stock kde 4.2. Tried upgrading kde twice but the upgrades buggered the machine each time.

I'm trying to change the Xfce Terminal Emulator prompt from bash-4.1$ to something like what kconsole has. If i issue a /bin/bash -l in the terminal, then I get the prompt and the colors that I want, but I'd like this to automagically happen when I click the Terminal icon in the Xfce panel. This is for Slackware 13.37 (32bit) and Terminal 0.4.6

I posted earlier regarding an issue with my netbook not having the <>| keys while on Scandinavian layout (Acer Aspire One 532H). I never use the "Fn" key on any laptop I have and it's especially disposable on this Netbook. While digging around in /usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty I've got the fi.map.gz open but unsure as to which is the fn key. How would I find out which maps to the fn key?

First system specs. Gateway Solo Pro 9300, 433Mhz, 288megs. OS Slackware 13.1 32-bit and KDE.
As I get more comfortable with Linux I find that I am doing more waiting for the computer to catch up.
Would it be better to trim down KDE or change to a lighter GUI? If I change to a lighter GUI will I have to reinstall things I have installed under KDE?

I've installed slax6 onto an ext3 partition and setup a users account, i've also just managed to mount some virtualbox shared folders which are working and i can access them fine. The problem is I cannot seem to give limited user accounts access to them. root can access them no problem! but right clicking and changing the permissions do nothing, because once I click apply, reopen the menu, the changes have reverted. I've tried chmod'ing them.. chmod o=rwx /mnt/folder I used 'o' because I can't seem to change the group permission for the folder. The shared folder I am mounting is formatted in NTFS and the other in ext3, I can't change the permissions of either.

I'm mainly asking beforehand so I won't have to shoot myself in the head twenty minutes from now. I suppose I'll find/figure out one way or the other anyway . Can I just source the 32dev.sh and then run sbopkg -i if the source for the package I want to create isn't 64bit capable? I might need to change the $ARCH variable to x86_64 too, right?

I just installed Slackware 13.1 on my Acer a0531h. My first problem is the size of letters on pure console. It's too small. I tried tweaking lilo but even using 'normal' doesn't change the size of letters. I haven't changed the default font (I think it's called default8x16). The text looks pretty sharp though, so I'm wondering whether this is its native resolution. The text during installation was huge, and quite blurry. I just want to have a text size I can easily read and if possible be sharp. I know I can start X and have whatever font family and size I want, but somehow I feel better using pure console. Just in case it matters, I want to say that eventually I want to have UTF8 support on the command line (so that I can read and write Greek).

I have the same problem as described in [URL]. Apparently the solution is to add
PHP Code:
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA" to xorg.conf.
However my system apart from this works fine without xorg.conf. Is there a way to change the AccelMethod without an xorg.conf?

Is there a way to change the mail spool location from /var/mail/ to some other place? I'm thinking of users own home directory or $HOME/.mail.
This is because system partition is not big enough to keep all mail from the company and /home is in a different one.
Creating another partition to keep /var or /var/mail seems too much just to keep emails.
Solution: checking /usr/doc/procmail-x.xx/examples/advanced

I've got a minor problem with my GPU: I replaced the OEM GeForce 6200 with a 9600 GT, but I believe the shutdown temperature is still set to the 6200's; causing annoyance with graphically intensive programs/games. It was a fairly small card, and has a low shutdown temp. BIOS revealed no settings, is there a setting for this in slack?

I had to reinstall Windows recently, which reset my clock under Linux. No problem, I set the clock, and then set the hardware clock to the system clock. Rebooted under Windows, and both were fine. After rebooting into Slack, it is again a few hours off. How can I change this permanently?

i had slackware 13.0 on my dell vostro 1320 and it was all good, but since the upgrade to 13.1 i cannot change the screen brightness with ctrl+up and ctrl+down keys..i'm not even sure how to start with this problem. from what i understand these keys 'call' a bios function...? so that would mean that some kernel module is not being loaded?or has the desktop environment lost the key mappings and that is causing my trouble?

I downloaded the new eclipse indingo and extracted it to /home/user/opt/eclipse. I then made a link to the eclipse executable on my Desktop folder. It works well, if I click the link it opens eclipse. My problem is that it shows the rachet icon on the desktop. When I try to change the icon for only that link I end up changing all the icons for all executable to eclipse's icon.

My DVD player is on /dev/hdc but when I put 'xine /dev/hdc' on the command line I get an error saying 'There is no demuxer plugin available to handle /dev/hdc'. If I use the mount point /media/DVD instead of /dev/hdc it works fine. I am trying to get DVDs to play automatically but I can't see how to get xine to look for /media/DVD instead of /dev/hdc. I have tried changing the location on the Settings -> Media tab, and the line which says 'directory a media in dvd device will be mounted' in ~/.xine/config but neither worked.

I am after some suggestions on how I could change my mounting method to suit my needs. At the moment, I simply mount the device to a location as root. What I would like to do is setup automounting, but in a particular way. In particular, I would like it if when I put in a usb stick, it would be automatically mounted to say /media/usb1, and a second stick would be to /media/usb2, while an esata connected drive would go to /media/sata1
Even better would be if I put in the first usb stick and it was mounted at /media/usb1, it would *always* be mounted at /media/usb1, no matter what order I connected it to my computer in.I would also like to quickly ask about the difference about udev rules and HAL. At the moment I have only used HAL for my touchpad, and have not touched udev at all. What are the differences/advantages etc...

I have noticed that PV and team are currently very receptive to proposed changes and additions for the upcoming Slackware 13.37 so I thought I would add my own request as well .On reinstallation or upgrade the stock slrn slackbuild overwrites the vital configuration file for slrnpull: slrnpull.conf. This file contains not only the newsgroups requested for reading but also the numbers to be downloaded as well as the time the posts will remain in the spool

For those of us in the US, last weekend we started daylight saving time (1 hour ahead). When I booted up my laptop on Sunday morning, the clock did not automatically update. I have a script to sync my clock with a public time server, so it was no big deal to run it. I did think it was odd that Slackware did not automatically adjust the clock.
My question is this: Is this expected behavior?
