Slackware :: Cannot Start Xorgconfig / Make It Possible?
Mar 27, 2010
I've just install Slack 13 and had been looking into the website for configure info. What is my problem is the #xorgconfig does not start on my system. It says command not found. I had searched for answer on the web and found no answer so I post here for help. Is there anything else I need to install to get my intel graphic card display more then 1024 resolution?
i can normally adjust the back light settings of my lap top by pressing fn and the up and down aarows. I am using the default xorg server without using xorgconfig in slackware, and it works perfect so far dispite this slight problem. When i do, do that key combo, (in kde) it does display the the meter of brightness, but i can't move the settings. I believe this may be an x issue, but not sure.
I'm trying to reconfigure xwindows because it looks like it's using default generic vga drivers and personally my gui looks like shit and when I open firefox to browse the web everything looks like shit, but when I run xorgconfig I get the following
xorgconfig: command not found
I searched google and couldn't find any helpful information.
I tried running xorgsetup but that's about worthless as can get it only setups the keyboard and asks you what color bit you want to use.
I have a mysql database and i use it with apache for my webpages. And I guess it dosen't start when the computer starts so I have to manually start it with "sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start" This returns fail so i went to '/var/run/mysqld/' and the folder was empty. I don't know if this is the problem or not. How can I fix this?
I'm configuring a new Centos 5.5 server in replacement of an old W2K server. The topology of our network is simple : one file/dhcp/dns relay server and workstations (PC's and some MAC's) plus network printers and scanners. All the workstations have dynamic IP addresses (easier because a lot of 'dynamic' changes : new persons with their own laptop, ...) and the server and printers/scanners have fixed IP addresses.I edited the dhcpd.conf (see here underneath), I have the file dhcpd.leases but it doesn't start !
1) Windows XP & then shrank it's partition to make room for OpenSuse) 2) OpenSuse with grub installed on the MBR (& then shrank the home partition & created a new root and home partition for Slackware 13.1). These two OSes dual-booted properly 3) Slackware 13.1 with LiLo installed to the superblock of the Slackware root partition (sda8). How do I get Slackware to be a 'working' selection on the boot menu?
You might be asking why would I want to this? I will tell you why. My wife. She has grown up using Windows. The jump from Windows XP to 7 wasn't as bad as I thought it would be for her. I just had to show her where things changed to for about 10-20 minutes and that was that.
I did a trial run with Ubuntu for about a month using Gnome and not her cup of tea. So now I did a search on the Internet and came up with a Gnome solution here is the link:
But both websites are oriented towards Ubuntu/Kubuntu. I am just wondering if this will work with Slackware???
My wife likes a speedy system almost as much as I do. She also like the Search field when you click on the Start menu in Windows 7, the taskbar at the bottom, the big red X in right hand corner of the windows.
I just hope I can go this route and change it to look like Windows 7. I will be very happy and so will my wife of course.
I have done several attempts to build a local mirror of Salckware 13.0. There are two problems: I have to wait very long for a connection, they appear error during a connection which broke it so I have to restart. Is there any other way to build mirror? I am using Alien Bob scripts. Never before happened something like that. The connections with common web pages (google, etc) work well. Maybe I should look for some other mirror than those listed in mirror-slackware-current.sh.
I will be finishing my upgrade cycle to 13.1 and I am a very happy man! Slackware 13.1 is First Rate. I think it is very important that we support Patrick Volkerding so that he can continue to deliver our favourite OS to us. Slackware is PV's source of income. I just made a donation to Slackware using paypal (see the donate link in my signature), it works flawlessly. donate whatever you can: Make a donation using paypal, buy the CDs/DVD, buy a Slackware subscription, or pick up some merchandise at the Slackware store.
I'm trying to take my current windows7 (x64) setup and make it into a dual-boot setup with slackware 13.0 (x32) and am hitting a brickwall. I guess I would like to know if I can salvage the situation without formating my windows drive. I fully intend to, but I had hoped to not do it this month. I'd like to get dual boot going so I can master it and acquire all the files/drivers I'll want and then format and do it 100% right next time.
Currently I have windows setup on a 3x 500gb Raid0 onboard array which itself has been flawless. After I shrunk my current partition size to give me about 25gb of free space I proceeded to setup Linux, and I was unable to perform the cfdisk portion for partitioning the array for Linux.
I tried using cfdisk: /dev/hdx (a1-a3,b1-b3) /dev/sdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
I even attempted to locate with: cat proc/partition and tried using cfdisk on every device it located. It always said it was either an unknown partition table and should I start at zero, or bad partition. I was of course too concerned over my windows setup (which has almost 1tb of stuff I have not backed up) to go any further into the unknown.
PS: I have used Slackware before, back at 8.1, 10, and even a very brief interlude at 12.0, this is my first attempt on this computer however with 13.0, it is currently running fine on my laptop and my PS3 (Laptop is even dual booting 7/Slack13. Albeit without raid)
Phenom 9850 M2N-SLI Deluxe (Nvidia AM2) 4x1gb of 1066 kingston hyperX 3x500gb WD Caviar Black Sata2 3.0

KDE was perfect before installing the second oracle but I have no idea why KDE crash and how to have it back again. Actually I played in some library that related in Oracle directory not related to root but I don't know what happend exactly. Please help me in steps to sovle this problem. I'm really afraid of losing the KDE and need to install linux fedora from beginning,
When I haven't run yum for a little awhile, it's slow to start up because it goes through all the progress bars of downloading from different repositories. specially, just now updates/primary_db had to download 5.5MB.
Is there some way to automate this so it happens in the background and not when starting up?
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10, and using wbar as my dock, and when i boot up my computer and log-in I like to have my dock there instead of opening it. Is there a way to make it open automatically right when I log in?
For any custom application I create which needs to run at startup, what I normally do is have an entry in my /etc/init.local that executes the app.Now if I just putCode:/data/app/prod/start And the app writes data to relative paths, it will be writing data all over the system. Is there a method of starting a script so it is aware of the folder it is in? Sure I can do "cd [folder]" then start the app, but wondering if there's a better way.
to the bottom of my .profile expecting a cow to tell me a fun quote whenever i pull up a terminal. It hasn't done anything, however. How do I achieve my desired effect?
I was running Ubuntu 9.10 with 3 - 1.5TB drives in a software Raid 5 array. The OS is installed to a separate drive. I decided to format the OS drive and install Ubuntu 10.10, but having done that I can no longer get my Raid array to start. When I am in the Disk Utility and hit the "Start RAID Array" button I get a message saying that there are not enough components to start the Raid array, even though the 3 raid drives show up within the Disk Utility.
I have made several start-up disk, just made 2 today, but certain ISO's won't even go into the "start up disk creator" window.I've made them with Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Linux Mint, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ultimate-Edition, Peppermint One & Peppermint Ice, but I can't make one with Puppy, PCLinuxOS, and a couple others.I'm trying to make one with "system rescue cd" so I can use it to totally wipe my 500GiB hdd, before I start to partition & install OS's on it. I downloaded system rescue & saved it to my desktop, but start up disk creator won't let me make a start up usb with it.My questions are...
1. Why does it refuse to make some & not others?
2. I know it's not totally necessary but, is there really any reason to completely wipe it before writing over it? Such as longevity or speed?
I have a lenovo thinkpad laptop, and it has both touch-pad (standard build in laptop mouse) and touch-point (in the middle of the keyboard) mouse options.
I almost invariably use the touch-point and the accompanied scroller and key-buttons.
HOWEVER, for the scroller to be recognized by ubuntu you must run two scripts as follows:
Restarting the computer resets these settings, and you must re-run them each time you start up ubuntu.
I am looking to write a script that will automatically run itself (which will execute the above commands), or to permanently change these settings so that it will not be necessary to run them at each start-up.
Thanks in advance, and if there is another thread on these forums that I should move to (or even just another thread that would be a more likely place to get a response). This seemed like the best forum (one which can certainly hold this post without violating any rules), but I may have missed something.
Can i make a .desktop file taht it executes autostart.sh script or any other script? like xmonad.desktop od dwm.desktop?so that when gdm or any other gui login manager loads autostart apps in xmonad?
I looked into the handbook, googled for it,but found no working solution to this "problem". Everytime I use Opensuse I must su and then type dhclient, how can I make sure my connection will be up as soon as I log in?
I installed polipo and polipo working perfectly, but it won't startup when I bootup the system. To start polipo correctly, root privilige is needed. I remember that in Ubuntu polipo starts with the system after installation. What should I do to make polipo start during the bootup process?
