Slackware :: Ntfs-3g Error After Kernel Upgrade To 2.6.35.4?

I was running 2.6.35 without any errors. I decided to upgrade to .4 today, used the same config. After i rebooted into the newly compiled kernel i got these errors on boot..

Code:
Mounting non-root local filesystems:
ntfs-3g: Failed to access volume '/dev/sdc1': No such file or directory

Configuration type 1, XATTRS are on, POSIX ACLS are off

I did a complete disk check and it appears to be fine. Then i booted in the default kernel that comes with slackware 13.1 and walla..No errors! What could be the problem? Did someone experience the same issue?

Slackware :: Enable Windows Wireless Drivers In Slackware 13.1 And How To Install XFCE

Aug 22, 2010

I recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.

Slackware :: Lack Of Event Sounds In Slackware Builds Of Xfce

Jan 25, 2011

I was over in the Desktop forum yesterday and apparently 'event sounds' are available for Xfce and are part of the original package, but I've never seen them made available, that is, the switch to turn them on isn't where it is suppose to be, in any Slackware specific package of Xfce.I've used 4.61 that came with Slackware64 13.1, 4.61 from the Salix depository, 4.62 from Mr. Workman, 4.62 from 'current' and recently 4.8 from Mr. Workman. None of these make the 'event sounds' available.

When I open it , the top is cut off , so the minimize , maximize and close buttons are cut-off . I really have no idea what to do.P.S. I have XFCE instead of KDE

Slackware :: Slackware 13.1 XFCE Persistent Wallpaper

Mar 21, 2011

Slackware 13.1 XFCE. I've come across a strange problem which i've never had before on Slackware. I decided to set a desktop up for my sister. Being girls as they are she wanted to change the wallpaper. I showed her how, however when the machine is restarted the wallpaper turns back to default. In all my slack machines around here, i just simply right click on the desktop and change it. That makes it persistent throughout boots. I'm obviously missing something.

General :: Permissions Locked To Read Only On NTFS Partition

Jul 4, 2011

I'm pretty new to Linux. Though I've used it for a little bit, I barely know any shell commands. I recently migrated from Mint to Fedora. Installation went fine and I thought I was doing great until I tried to copy something onto one of my ntfs partitions (I got them automounted through changing fstab). Now I can't change the permissions with sudo chmod... it says I can, but nothing changes. And, while the folders are listed as allowing rw for the user group I set up, I can't actually change anything. I'm guessing I've done something wrong with my fstab file.

My fstab file is:

Code:

I should probably note that I'm using NVIDIA fake RAID 0, which is why my device locations are all /dev/mapper/nvidia_fcficeibp#

The command I have tried to change permissions is:

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Read-only External HD - Ntfs-3g Unavailable On Suse10.2

Jan 1, 2010

I'd like to upgrade to suse 11.2 (currently using suse 10.2) and I've attached an external hard drive to save some data on, but it will only mount read-only, by either automount or by command line.

Here's the mount command I use (as root): mount -t ntfs -o rw /dev/sdb1 /media/ExpansionDrive

But when I look, permissions are dr-x------ 1 root root 4096 2009-12-05 13:38 cgate

Some related discussion on the opensuse forums has mentioned ntfs-3g, but my external filesystem type is ntfs. ntfs-3g is not available on my system currently or when I search for it with yast. I'm assuming I don't necessarily need ntfs-3g in order to mount my drive as read-write, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

How To Mount NTFS Filesystem Partition Read Write Access in openSUSE

However, these have not been specific enough to solve this particular issue. I can't think of any other possible problems other than the ntfs-3g.

Not sure if this is necessary, but I'm using SUSE 10.2, kernel 2.6.18.2-34, and the external drive is a Seagate 1TB.

Ubuntu :: Ext USB NTFS Disk Unable To Read Files Created Under 10.10

Feb 9, 2011

Using Ubuntu 10.10 (installed via mythbuntu) I'm unable to read or see files/directories created under Ubuntu. I think it started happening after a reboot to Windows. Some of the directories created under Ubuntu have disappeared completely and some of them produce the following error:
/media/storage/videos/Kids Videos$ ls
ls: cannot access Justin Bieber: Input/output error
ls: cannot access Octonauts: Input/output error
rest of directory is seen fine...

Same on some files:
ls -l
ls: cannot access Dirk Gently.mp4: Input/output error
ls: cannot access Dirk Gently.nfo: Input/output error
ls: cannot access Dirk Gently.srt: Input/output error
ls: cannot access Dirk Gently.tbn: Input/output error
ls: cannot access Human Planet: Input/output error
ls: cannot access Russell Howard's Good News: Input/output error
ls: cannot access The Planets: Input/output error
ls: cannot access Lost Land of the Tiger: Input/output error
total 300160 .....

Just to make it worse I copied more data onto the disk from windows so may have lost some it completely. It there anyway I can repair this? When trying to check under Windows it says it can't. Some of the missing files can be reloaded but others can't. Ran chkdsk /f under Windows XP. Some files have reappeared, but there has been a lot of unrecoverable files lost. Conclusion: Ubuntu 10.10 is badly broken for writing to NTFS. As I would like to share between Windows & Ubuntu using the external disk, I'm not sure what to do at this stage.

Debian Configuration :: Windows 7 Won't Read NTFS Partition Created By Raspberry Pi

Jan 10, 2016

I have a Western Digital 3TB USB drive connected to a Raspberry Pi 2 running Raspbian Jessie. I created an 30GB ext4 system partition and a NTFS Data partition using the remainder of the drive. I formatted the NTFS partition as follows:

sudo mkfs.ntfs -Q -L Data /dev/sda2

The drive works fine on the Pi but when I connect it to a Windows 7 pc the pc doesn't recognise the format of the Data partition and can't access it.

On the Pi I ran:
$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda2

Disk /dev/sda2: 2.7 TiB, 2968557453312 bytes, 724745472 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 4096 = 4096 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes

[Code] .....

Partition table entries are not in disk order.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Freeze (hang) Ntfs Partition Read Write Access?

Jun 4, 2011

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit desktop version on ext4 partition without swap. I have maximus iv extreme motherboard with 8 Gbytes RAM. Using 3 internal ntfs formatted hard drives and 3 external ntfs usb 2.0 hard drives. When I am trying to copy or move files FROM or TO any ntfs partiton it is 90 percent chance it is going to freeze. For copy/moving files I am using krusader run as ROOT or as user without root privilege or Nautilus as user without root privilege. It wasn't possible to switch to another terminal - it simply does not react on keyboard or mouse input and only hard reset is possible (scares me because of ntfs disks)From this point of view I have suspicious on ntfs driver but:I am completely beginner in linux and I am looking for help to navigate me how to investigate to find what is causing the problem eventually to solve it?

According to my experience it seems to does not matter if hard disk is internal or external connected through SATA II or SATA III or USB 2.0. I have tried to manipulate with ntfspartitions through the vmware or virualbox or truecrypt software or just do a simplecopy/move files - it have has always the same results - freeze. There is not possible to say how long it is going to work properly and when it is going to freeze - sometimes it's working hour, sometimes it's working couple of seconds - no matter if it is read or write operation/s within ntfs partition.

Hardware :: Western Digital External Drive Read-only Under Gentoo - NTFS?

Jun 21, 2010

I bought a Western Digital 1TB external hard drive to use with a Gentoo build. It connected beautifully, mounted visibly but despite being mounted read/write any attempt to write to it produced the error "read-only file system". I chased a number of red herrings before I found that the drive comes with an NTFS filesystem and NTFS support in my kernel was set to read-only, which I think was a default setting. Simple fix was to install a different file system - as it was a new drive there was no old data to lose.
