I attempted to upgrade a Slackware 13.0 fresh install to current. First I updated 13.0 by running:

I have one machine where I have several versions installed on different partitions. The base partition (/dev/hda1) is Slack 12.1. On a spare partition (/dev/hdc4) I had installed Slackware64-current. Last week I slackpkg upgraded and installed the 2.6.32.2 kernel, and now that partition will not boot. I know that with the new kernels the hd* designation has been removed, and have already redone that fstab (accessing it from a different boot) to reflect the sd*. Here is the slack64 section of my lilo.conf:

After reading this article openSUSE News - Forum Users Benefit from openSUSE KDE Repository I added that KDE repo to yast and switched all packages.
After rebooting it says (failsafe kernel configuration says the same):
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS:
Unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0)
And stops at this string: "[<c0203826>] kernel_thread_helper+0x6/0x10" and capslock light is blinking.
I have had a serious problem with my laptop recently. I have been having unexpected reboots and kernel panics and I don't know why. I can't tell if it is hardware or software, and what is causing it.
It has happened on multiple power bricks from different outlets and locations, my slice battery and my main 9-cell battery.
I am running Debian Testing/Stretch with Kernel 4.1 with XFCE4 on a Lenovo T420 with 16 gb of ram, a i5-2540m, USB3 Express Card, OCZ SSD, an intel 7260 ac wifi card and Ericcson F5521GW 3g card. I also have a modded bios for the wireless cards, and I have had that for over half a year without any problems.
I have no clue what the cause is from the logs.
I also booted into Windows for a bit, then it blue screened, but I don't know if it was because of a driver I had tried to put on earlier for the 3g card, because Linux was out of commission and I needed 3g. The driver didn't work, gave a code 10 or something and gave me a blue screen that said something along the lines of device driver attempting to corrupt the system has been caught. Windows also won't boot anymore.
I'm not worried about Windows though, and what I really need is Linux to work, being that this was the first time I booted up into windows in several months.
Memtest runs fine, and passes all tests.
Right when I turned on my computer after one incident, I wrote a script to check the CPU temp and write it to a file every second. Once the computer turned off, I read the file and it said the CPU was at 39 degrees. Not something to turn off over.
I cannot find any indication of a problem in /var/log/kern.log. kern.log was extracted from the computer right after it rebooted randomly. Find it here: [URL] ...
After having my usb wifi adapters working fine for some time, they stopped working and I can not get network connectivity.
Some one else was using my box and they reported seeing a kernel panic and then rebooted the box. Now there is no connectivity through the wifi interfaces.
I have seen the kernel panics related to this driver before, but usually a reboot has no ill effect.

I have a new acer machine which runs fine on 10.10 mythbuntu desktop livecd. Install seemed fine.
Then I ran an update and on reboot I get a kernel panic error. Research on this reveals it as a very deep subject which can consume many hours, so I opted to reinstall.
This time with ubuntu 10.10. I've tried different CDs, liveusb. Same errors.
So, the question is this - where do I concentrate my efforts - somewhere ubuntu doesn't like this machine, or grub. Does a reinstall overwrite the grub install too? Or do I have a bogus grub install I need to purge before I will get anywhere.
First: I upgraded my slackware 13.0 last night (Philippine time) to -current. I just download the while current tree (except for source) and copied to my home dir, then do the slackpkg commands.
#1 Added a mirror to my home directory pointing the slackware-current tree.
#2 slackpkg update
#3 slackpkg install-new
#4 slackpkg upgrade-all
#5 slackpkg clean-system
#6 lilo was configured
#7 reboot
It successfully upgraded. Although I'm aware that I have installed openchrome driver and drm kernel module when it was slackware 13.0.
After a reboot, it crashes in between the boot time, if I was not mistaken, I read ACPI something on the bottom of the console, then the screen flickers and goes blank. It locks up there.
By the way, it is a laptop with VIA chipset on it.
(Using the Slackware 13.0 DVD, I booted using hugesmp.s root=/dev/sda3 rdinit= ro for the rescue.)
Trying to fix it by myself (no internet at home) I tried to look at /var/log/messages and cannot find what is the cause (newbie mode). I also tried to disable some services such as hald, httpd, mysqld, bluetooth, wicd, wireless, the old kernel and some others at /etc/rc.d/ by removing the execute bit.
After a restart, still the problem exists.
Now, I finally backup the whole home dir, moved to home-bak and decided to install the fresh slackware-current instead.
Second: I used the 13.0 installer, then setup slackware using the pre-mounted directory containing the slackware-current tree. I only deleted the files except for home-bak and not reformat the drive.
It actually installs, but after the reboot (using the new 2.6.32.3 kernel), still the problem persists.
I would like to upgrade from my slackware version 12.2.0 based system. I have 200GB IDE hard drive. Tried installing with kernel version 2.6.32.7. The installation would not boot. The kernel is looking for root on sda1 when it should be hda1. Is there a way other than reconfiguring, compiling and building the kernel?

This is preventing the installer from detecting the SCSI hard drives. I have been able to install sucessfully with 12.0. Can anyone suggest how to fix this?

Now I tried to reboot the system and verify the speed of the all new packages, but KDM don't start! When I call KDM, it shines a little, show the mouse pointer and backs to term. When I call the XDM its a little different, it let me put my user and password, but after back to term too...

I have gone through all the kernel config options repeatedly, but everytime I get the same error after running my configured kernel.
To begin with, after unpacking the kernel I get Undefined video mode numer: 305 and then a selection of video modes appears.

My partitions are ext2, and this format (as well as other formats) are compiled in the kernel.
I have been dual booting "Windoz" (hda1) and slackware 11 (RTAI - hda 5) old system. The problem happen after I installed slackware 13(sda8) on the same hard drive. I was able to mount my old slack11 (now (sda5)) to slack13 to read. So I wanted to boot to slack11.

today I updated my Slackware 13.0 to 13.1. Unfortunately it didn't boot any longer. I probably forgot to run "lilo" before restarting. However, I reinstalled Slackware and I installed grub instead of lilo I'm more familiar with it..

Then I compared it to other Linux system on different computers and I noticed that every of them, who are using uuids, using an initrd as well. So I created one and now it boots properly.
I just wonder, why? Why does it need an initrd to boot by using uuids?
I updated my kernel in slackware current but can't install lilo, when i was with my old kernel it gave an error about not finding the sda drives (they were named hda before the upgrade).I booted into the slackware 13.0 dvd and modified fstab and lilo.conf replacing hda with sda but lilo still gives an error of not finding sda drives.How can i install lilo so i can boot into my sistem??

I just upgraded my Slackware64-current version to the latest kernel 2.6.32.3. Almost everything works just fine, except that I have no sound on the command line and in web browsers, anymore. I don't get any sound out of the command line program play and Flash.
For example, I have a few .wav files, that I can play with Kaffeine and Amarok, but when I try to play them with play on the command line, the program runs and displays that it plays the file, but I don't hear any sound. The same happens with XMMS, too: It displays the usual graphics showing the dynamics and the progress, but my speakers remain silent.
Also, alsaconf doesn't detect my audio hardware, anymore. I have onboard sound and a Creative X-Fi PCI card. Usually both were "seen" by alsaconf. Now it tells me, that it can't identify any audio cards.
On the other hand, when I go into the multimedia section of the KDE system settings, I can "Test" the audio hardware, and the onboard sound works great and I can hear the KDE welcome sound. I have already remove all packages withe 'alsa' in their name and re-installed them, including their compat32 peers, and rebooted several times. Up to now to no avail. Does anyone have a clue, what the problem is caused by?
so, I compiled the 2.6.35.7 kernel yesterday and used the config from 2.6.35.6 doing make oldconfig,etc
its the vanilla kernel with BFS, BFQ[*], Tuxonice, aufs2, & squashfs-lzma patches after compiling and rebooting I have noticed that the mouse freezes whenever the pc cpu is running high cpu % this didnt happen before with any other kernel and as I said, I used the 2.6.35.6 config Has anyone else had issues with 2.6.35.7 kernel? hardware is amd athlon64 3300+ 2.4ghz 1GB RAM, on 32bit Slackware -current I am going to compile the vanilla kernel now and see what happens.
I am running Slackware64-current(multi-lib) and I have stumbled across something that I don't fully understand.I have read that the kernel-headers should not be updated as glibc is compiled against them and therefore requires that set of kernel headers. Recently the kernel version has been bumped a couple of times but glibc has stayed the same.Should glibc be re-compiled each time there is a kernel update?
Perhaps someone can explain, in very simple terms, the relationship between the kernel, the kernel headers, the kernel modules and glibc.
After the bunch of updates with current, my custom kernel (2.6.33) can't boot.
The error is:
/sbin/e2fsck: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sda6
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate
superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
The /dev/sda6 is ext4 and is ok since it can boot with official huge smp kernel 2.6.33.
My custom kernel can boot before this bunch of updates in current.

I switched today to slackware-current on one of my desktops to play with it and ran directly into a problem.
Since ages my lilo.conf has two entries for slackware. One for runlevel 3 and one for runlevel 4.

Since the upgrade this is no more possible because I get a kernel panic as soon as udevadm trigger is called. The stack says something about an unknown boot option. Because that i removed the append lines from my lilo.conf and i was able to boot the system. The crash happens when udev is called from within the ramdisk and afterwards. I tried both.
My question is now. Is this a bug in udev or expected? I have this setup since at least 5 years and had never problems with that. What do I have to do to be able to select the runlevel at boot time?
Is there any way to install "VirtualBox-3.2.12-68302" in the "slackware64-current" (Kernel 2.6.38.7) ?

I tested using "VB 3.2.12" and Slackware64-13.37 (kernel 2.6.37.6).

My first thoughts was that it might be my grub bootloader configuration, so had a big play around with that but it didn't fix it. Also made sure support was built for filesystems. However almost all that Fstab mounts are ext3 anyway, and certainly the root and /boot are. Now thinking it may be a memory error so will run a check when I shutdown.

1. Does minimum installation not drop on a kernel or initrd with ext3 support? I can't imagine that's true, but have to ask.
2. The USB stick is single partition ext3. Maybe there is some limitation specifically related to USB stick booting that requires boot to be FAT16 or FAT32? Except the CentOS 5.5 installer refuses to let me install on either FAT.
3. How can I do the equivalent of lsmod on a linux installation that will not boot? i.e. I have CentOS x86_64 running in VirtualBox, I can plug the USB stick in there, so how do I get information on the USB stick's kernel and initrd if I can't boot from it?
4. Is it possible to rebuild the i386 based initrd on this USB stick, when the computer is not booted from that stick, with a system that's x86_64 based?
System Info:
Dell Latitude i686 Laptop which has run CentOS 5.5 and Fedora 12,13,14 in the past, and boots from Fedora 14 Live CD transferred to a USB stick. So I know USB booting is possible on this machine, and this stick.
The process of creating the stick:
CentOS 5.5 i386 on a USB stick. Old Dell i686 laptop which has previously run CentOS 5.5 installed from DVD, and has successfully booted from this same USB stick holding transferred Fedora 12,13,14 Live CDs. CentOS 5.5 was installed onto the USB drive directly by the CentOS 5.5 DVD installer (running virtualized in VirtualBox 4.02 on Mac OS X 10.6.5.). No errors or complaints during installation.
For whatever reason, the installer did not do some things correctly. First Grub wasn't working correctly, I got that sorted out and have the Grub+CentOS splash screen, it finds vmlinuz and the initrd, and then I get a kernel panic.
Ext3 was built into the kernel and that's why I'm getting this message. I do not know how the installer would have dropped a kernel or initrd during instalation that that don't contain such a basic thing that obviously comes in linux kernel 2.6.18-89 EL.
I have the following strange thing with a RHEL4 installation. Since last week, the system did a reboot and now something is really fucked up. During boot we get the following messages (don't care about 'strange' typo's, my colleague typed it 'blind' from the screen)

The strange thing is that we never see a 'could not mount blabla' or similar messages. First we thought it was a failing kernel update by plesk, but even after manually updating the kernel with RHN RPM's, still the same message. Booting with rescue mode and then chroot the system works. After that we even can start things like plesk and so on.
We double checked things with another RHEL4 install, and at least two things were odd:
1: the working machine has /dev/dm-0 and /dev/dm-1, the broken one doesn't
2: some files on /dev didn't have group root, but 252
We tried to recreate the /dev/dm-X nodes with [vgmknodes -v], output:

I am running an Hp Pavillion dv6000 with the Broadcom card that never seems to work for Linux. I recently talked with my friend who said he found a way to get it work.following his instructions I opened Synaptic and checked the package bmcwl-kernel-source to be installed.I went through the process of it all and it said it had install successfully. I restarted the computer and when I tried to enter my operating system I got this error "Kernel panic - not syncing : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown - block(8,1)"
I have previous versions of Linux on my computer so I can still get in to those if need be but I don't know how to undo what I did or why it isn't working for that matter. Does anyone have any ideas as to why I am getting this error and how I can fix it?
this is what i did i downloaded the latest stable kernel archive from kernel.org and extracted the archive into the download directory (i don't think that matters though) then i downloaded and installed the ncurses archive (needed for menuconfig) then i opened a terminal and navigated to the directory that was extracted from the archive and issues the floowing commands

I only have a minimal linuxkernel (bzImage) who is 1,2 mb big. And then I have Busybox who is 174,6 kb big.
The commands in busybox is: cd, ls, mkdir, rmdir, wget, httpd, clear, rm, poweroff, halt, reboot, fdisk, mount, umount, free, and cp.
When I compiled the kernel i use initramfs/initrd function and point it to a folder where initrd/initramfs source is.
The kernel works OK with others initramfs/initrd files. But not with my own.

View 2 Replies View RelatedRecently i've been playing with few variations of linux distros since my Windows XP got infected with something that makes anything flash-player related crash or restart computer even(im saying this because it might be related), reinstall didn't help fix it so i decided to better switch back to Linux world and tried some newest distros. Everything was nice untill..recently some distros after installation gave me kernel-panic or caps lock+scroll lock lights blinking..trouble is Fedora 14 just gave me same stuff after i went maybe 5mins away from keyboard with web browser open then came back to notice..if at first i thought it was wrongly made distribution now i'm bit scared that my PC is dying..i did basic search in google and people say it may be related to hardware beeing too old or drivers but when i use it then i don't encounter this - just when afk. I have almost none experience in Fedora so was just wondering if someone could point me to right direction
