I try to connect to my server (whose IP is x.x.x.x below) from my laptop. I have no idea why openvpn client won't work this time. It works fine in win7 before. I re-installed openvpn but it doesn't work neither. Then I searched for this issue, find that it is possibly caused by disabled DHCP Client service. I checked, and found it was enabled. Still won't work after restarting dhcp client service.

Basic Info:

OpenVPN client: openvpn-2.2.0

Debian :: Cannot Connect To OpenVPN Server

Oct 20, 2015

I try to establish basic connection between my 2 end systems using openvpn. The problem is when i move the client files to my laptop i cant even ping the server from there. I copy paste the server commands in section 4 [URL] ....

In the client i ran the first command and changing VPNSERVER IP with 10.9.8.1 and LOCALGATEWAY IP with 192.168.1.1
which i thought that whats the server use : ROUTE_GATEWAY 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0 in the server initialization process

The second command produce error device tun0 not found and when i create one using openvpn --mktun --dev tun

I get RTNETLINK answers : network is unreachable

Note : I use wireless connection in the client system (laptop). The server works good and i could ping him ( from the same machine ) but cant ping him or access the vpn server in my laptop. I also use default openvpn settings...

Ubuntu Networking :: OpenVPN Only Connect When External?

Apr 26, 2010

We use Openvpn for remote access to the office network. It would be nice to keep this running and automatically connect to the office at all times.Once started, it does this anyway. The problem lies when the user comes into the office. Openvpn connects as usual to the vpn gateway, but this causes weird routing loops. Is there a way to say to Openvpn "Always connect to the gateway unless you are on network 10.10.10.0/24" ?

Networking :: Use OpenVPN To Connect To Home Network

Apr 14, 2010

I have a network that consists of a few desktop machines, laptops, and two Internet connected linux servers. The Linux servers are the gateways, routers, and firewalls for my desktop and laptop machines.Whenever I'm away from home; I can connect to my home machines over the Internet by first ssh'ng (technically I use Webmin; because my firewall on each Linux servers blocks ssh from the Internet.) to one of the linux servers and then ssh'ng to the desired machine on my home network.

This works fine for my home linux machines. But not my Windows machines.I'd like to be able to rdp or rdesktop to my Windows machines. Will OpenVPN allow me to accomplish this ?

Ubuntu Networking :: Openvpn Through Networkmanager Doesn't Connect On Lucid

Jul 27, 2010

i have added a vpn connection on my Lucid desktop machine, but every time i try and connect, it fails. I also have the same, identical vpn connection on my karmic install on my laptop. everything works perfectly on Karmic, but Lucid is having problems. I have followed identical steps for creating the vpn connection on both machines: vpn connections can be made in 2 ways, the first is through the network manager, but trying to connect through the nm-applet returns an error about vpn failing to connect and "no valid vpn secrets".

I suspect this is at the root of the problem. The only way for my Lucid machine to successfully connect through the command line is if I run the openvpn command under sudo.

Ubuntu Networking :: OpenVPN Connection - Unable To Correctly Connect ?

Sep 7, 2010

I have setup an OpenVPN server on Ubuntu server. I am able to connect with Windows clients. I am, however, unable to correctly connect using Ubuntu.

If the router firewall is blocking the pings to keep the connection alive, then the connection initially does not work, but will work after the first timeout and reconnect. If the firewall does not block the pings then the initial connection attempt never times and therefore the connection does not work.

Attached is the readout from the client.

The first attempt gives error ERROR: Linux route add command failed: external program exited with error status: 7

Successive attempts work, they just time out every two minutes.

CentOS 5 Server :: Openvpn Connect To Samba Share From Windows XP Client?

Sep 15, 2009

I'm trying to set up a VPN connection between our CentOS 5.3 server at work and my bosses XP computer at home. At this point, we are kinda locked into Quickbooks. I'm testing the connection from my XP boot at home to see if it works. I can log into our servicemanuals easily enough from XP at home however, the windows takes forever to update. I have the Samba server only listening on port 445 because is seems to work more efficiently at work. I connect to the Samba shares via linux from home and everything works well but, when I try to do anything with the shares from Windows client at home, it's very slow!

I'm thinking that it must have something either to do with the Windows OpenVPN client or the client.conf file. Is there anything I should look at in the .conf file for answers?

Ubuntu Networking :: Setup OpenVPN In Order To Connect Back To Home Network While Traveling For Secure Browsing?

Apr 3, 2010

I'm trying to setup OpenVPN in order to connect back to my home network while traveling for secure browsing and such. However, before I can even start trying to set that up I tried to see if I could open port check my computer through the net. And I'm having a hard time doing that.

As far as I can tell, here are my roadblocks:
1. Is ISP (Qwest) blocking my ports?
2. Is my modem doing the proper port forwarding and firewall?
3. Is my router doing the same?
4. Is my firewall on the computer allowing the request?

To minimize sources of error, I've turned off my local and router firewall and setup my router to forward ports. I'm not to familiar with my modem, but I'm pretty sure that the firewall is turned off by default and I think I've done port-forwarding correctly. But still no success when doing an open port check. At this point I don't know how to diagnose the problem.

Server :: OpenVPN Range Address / When Change Static IP To Dynamic IP In Config File OpenVPN Didn't Work?

Feb 13, 2010

I want to configure a VPN over the Internet.I installed the 'openvpn' package, generated the key file, transfered it by a secure way to the client, and setted up the configuration file.

So, in that configuration file I input the IP addresses of the tunneled interfaces. Both IPs are static in the tunnel.

Then, I've heard somewhere that I can assign a dynamic configuration IP for the client. I do this registering a range.

Well, when I tried to change static IP to dynamic IP (changing '192.168.0.2' to '192.168.0.0/24') in the configuration file, the OpenVPN didn't work.

Obviously I don't know what I'm doing, and I really, don't believe that simply changing the IP will make it work, but I tried.

I hope I explained my problem as well.

My configuration file:

# OpenVPN Server Configuration File
dev tun 0
ifconfig 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.2
cd /etc/openvpn
secret key_file

In client I execute the 'openvpn' without the '--daemon' parameter. Then I want that my client uses a IP in a range (192.168.0.0/24, for example), instead of a static IP (192.168.0.2).I also thought to use a DHCP server, but I'm not sure that will work.

Ubuntu Networking :: OpenVPN On 10.04 Server - Routes Fail

Jul 18, 2010

New ubuntu desktop user here. I've been working with Ubuntu servers for over 3 yrs, using Windows as clients. I have OpenVPN running on an ubuntu 10.04 server, and it has worked well with Windows OpenVPN clients connecting. I took those same settings and applied them to this new install of Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop, and now openvpn seems to be failing when we get to the routes (I wrestled with the network-manager "secrets" issue for hours, but that works now).

I performed the following:
sudo openvpn --config fogbank-ny1.ovpn

I am using the suggested openvpn routes. If I connect from Windows (actually the .ovpn file is taken directly from the working windows machine).. all is well, routes work fine all traffic is routed thru the VPN -- same way it's worked for over a yar. I assume that this is what is causing networkmanager to fail as well. those logs indicate that it has connected to the vpn, but is probably stopping when it gets to routes.

Ubuntu Networking :: OpenVPN Server And Client At Same Time?

Oct 26, 2010

I have an Ubuntu server that is currently running Ubuntu 8.10. I was thinking of making it a VPN server for my iPhone and also for my laptop whenever I'm outside and need to access internet over insecure wireless networks. Now that part should be easy I found several guides on how to configure OpenVPN server, as well as enabling clients on iPhone, and OSX.

However, the things is that my server is currently a OpenVPN client also, I have a paid tunnel set up to bypass my ISP blocking incoming traffic on various ports. Is it possible to keep this setting but still enabling a VPN server? Essentially causing traffic from my external device to go in through my tunnel to the VPN server, and then out through the external VPN provider.

Ubuntu Networking :: OpenVPN Routed And Bridged On The Same Server?

Mar 10, 2011

I currently have one of our clients set up to use a routed VPN for their 5 laptops to connect to the server remotley. And this works brilliantly. They are about to bring on a remote office that will need a VPN connection back to the main office, so I was going to set up a bridged connection between the two sites (and possibly more sites in the future).

So my question is whats the best way to go about this? Can I have one instance of OpenVPN running with tun0 set up for a routed connection to the laptops and add a second tun (tun1) to the config that will be for the bridged connection between the sites? Or am I going to have to run multiple instances of OpenVNP, one for the routed and another for the bridged?

If routed and bridged have to run in seperate instances, will I have to add another instance for each new remote site that needs a connection? Can a bridged config connect to multiple sites, or have multiple tuns in the one config?

Fedora Networking :: OpenVPN Server Configuration On F14

Jun 16, 2011

I have (seemingly regretfully) finally upgraded my Fedora Core 7 linux machine that has served me so well for the past decade. One of the final pieces to put in place was my Openvpn config (which was running flawlessly on my FC7) which I cannot get to work.

Here are my steps.

1. Disabled SELinux

2. Added the following entry in my iptables: (although I've stopped iptables to help troubleshoot)
-A INPUT -i tap0 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -i br0 -j ACCEPT
-A FORWARD -i br0 -j ACCEPT

3. Yum installed openvpn and bridge-utils (btw I'm using bridging)

4. Configured my bridge-start script as such:
#!/bin/bash
# Set up Ethernet bridge on Linux
# Requires: bridge-utils
# Define Bridge Interface
br="br0" .....

5. Configured my openvpn server conf as such:
proto tcp-server
port 5990
dev tap0 .....

When I execute my bridge-start script it creates the br0 and tap0 then all connectivity vanishes (I can only ping my gateway 10.0.0.50) - internet and any other addresses time out.

Ubuntu Networking :: OpenVPN Server With Nm-managed Wifi Uplink?

Feb 7, 2011

I'm attempting to set up a VPN server on my box using the nifty HowTo posted here: [URL]

My setup is as follows:wifi0 --> Internet; managed entirely via nm-applet (NetworkManager)
Where I'm running into trouble is in the creation of a bridge interface (br0) to bridge future VPN clients to my local network.

The guide(s) say that I need to screw around in /etc/network/interfaces to setup br0 and [eth0/wifi0] accordingly. The problem is that when I specify a configuration of any sort for wifi0 (my only choice for a network uplink), it disables nm and I am unable to configure my wifi in any sort of sane way after reboot... Further info: this "server" doesn't move, and always always connects to the same wifi hotspot that is also nailed in place.

Server :: Which Php Command For Shell Interaction Shall Use?

Dec 26, 2010

As homework for my study I have to do some kind of browser GUI to send commands to mysql command line tool and to show the output in the browser. I already set up sudo to have the right permissions for the www-data user. In the php documentation I found that one of the following four commands are probably for tasks like mine.

exec
passthru
shell exec
system

Can anyone tell me which one is the best for my requirements? The idea is to use php from the browser to connect to mysql like on the command line with: "mysql user=username password" And then give back the output of the command line to the browser. If the above is working then the next step would be to put a link in order to execute the command show database; again through php by clicking that link. After clicking this link it would give back to the browser what the command line would display.
