View 1 RepliesI've ran into a pickle regarding permissions and ACL. My users has a folder called "UVdokumenter", in wich they want to put documents up for sharing and editing. Everyone needs to be able to edit the files in that folder, so i set the ACL to this:

I've a problem on one of my servers with file permissions. Quite simply , when I run chmod 777 -R against a folder , it seems to be inconsistent on making that particular folders permissions trickle down to the folders beneath. Some folders inherit its permissions , some don't. For example...
/projects
Contains
/Jan /Feb /Mar /April
They all in turn contain folders marked /1 , /2 , /3 , up to /10, these folders all contain more folders , running to a depth of 6.
However , depending on what folder our users save their files into , some are saved with rwxrwxr-- , some get saved with rwxrwxrx. Forgive my lack of understanding but if I run the above command against the top level folder will this not make every folder and file below it inherit its permissions of 777 ?? Or is there something else that I need to do?
i have a directory ( /dir1) that belongs to a user1:group1. I need to know if this is possible and if so a basic idea of how to. when i copy a file into /dir1 (as root) i would like it to obtain a different user and group. Is this possible?

As I know the setgid utility allow to inherit the permission from parent directory to child directory.
I have a directory called data. Then I am running a script under the user id 'robot'. robot writes to the data directory and update files inside. The idea is data is open for both me and robot to update.
So I setup the permission and owner group like this
drwxrwxr-x 2 me robot-grp 4096 Jun 11 20:50 data
where both me and robot belongs to the 'robot-grp'. I change the permission and the owner group recursively like the parent directory.
I regularly upload new files into the data directory using rsync. Unfortunately, new files uploaded does not inherit the parent directory's permission as I hope. Instead it looks like this
-rw-r--r-- 1 me users 6 Jun 11 20:50 new-file.txt
When robot tries to update new-file.txt, it fails due to lack of file permission.
I'm not sure if setting umask helps. In anycase the new files does not really follow it.

u=rwx,g=rx,o=rx
I'm often confounded by Unix file permission. Do I even have a right plan? I'm using Debian lenny.
I do have an Ubuntu Headless server which is running Samba on it. My mp3 file collection resides on that server on is being share.
So far, no problems connecting to that drive and writing from my Windows box on that share. But if I use my main laptop, which runs Ubuntu Lucid and download an mp3 song from Amazon, the moment I move that to the share, I got permissions problems from the Windows machine. This is clearly a permission issue with group and others; the song is being created on the share without read and write permissions to others or the samba group I created.
My question is. How can I make this process simple or automatic, when moving songs to the share? I don't want to go there everytime and run ...

View 2 Replies View Relatedi have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings
I have the following Cron job scheduled on my Postfix mail server: Code: 00 18 * * * /usr/bin/clamscan -r --remove /home/.This is just running a scan on my entire /home/ directory and removing any infected files it finds. My question is since this is being ran at 6pm via Cron, how can I get the results of this job emailed to me via text? Does anyone recommend a command I can add to the end which will dump the results into a file or email and send it to a specific email address? This server is my company Postfix MTA for everyone.

When I run 'sendmail -bv', it sends the mail delivery status report as a mail to the root. Is there a way I can redirect this to the console instead of sending as a mail. requirement is to programatically find the mail host of the recipient for which I thought of using this 'sendmail -bv' command. Anyway, I have irssi set to output logs to a folder accessible by my web server. User permissions are all set up, so it writes to the folder just fine, but when I access the server index in a web browser (i.e., page that says "index of /[directory] at the top) I cannot see the the directory or the logs that irssi is making. I can ssh in and see the folders and files in the terminal, so they are being created. How can I set it so these are viewable through the web server? I tried restarting the server, no effect.
I want to search for 1 file (say test.txt) on first server and all the output of this search to be greped as per my requirement and then transfered on the second server at the same location where they were on first server.
E.g.
output of search of file (test.txt) >> output.txt
/tmp/test.txt
/home/cpan/test.txt
/opt/cpanel/test.txt
Now I want to grep this output to only related to cpanel,

I am writing a script which will fetch data from different machines and display it on single terminal. I have created a file named SERVERNAMES containing ip address of machines I need to monitor. Then for every IP I am issuing ssh command to get date on that machine. However When I am trying it on the script it is just giving me output of first server and it is ignoring rest servers mentioned in file. ssh works fine without password for all machines mentioned in SERVERNAMES.

I've got a system that is maxing out CPU. Running "mpstat -P ALL 3 5" shows the following.

All 5 groups show the same. My first question is why would CPU0 be the only one with intr/s and the others do not? Info.The OS is RHEL 5.4 running as a VM on ESXi 4.1. Memory doesn't appear to be an issue, the system has 8 GB and its only using about 1.5 GB. Second question, I'm positive the process that is the problem is the tomcat process. Does anyone know a good way to see whats happening with a specific process?
I have apache 2.2.3 installed with php5 and libapache2-mod-php5. The server displays web-pages fine, but when I try to load a .php file, nothing shows up. There aren't any errors, not in the browser and not in the Apache2 error logs... just nothing shows up. When I look at the page source on the browser, all the HTML code is there, but all the PHP code is gone, as though it was parsed. I can't get any output to show up though, echo and print both do nothing.What could be the problem?Example:

First how do I get HDMI audio output to my TV? I think I have just a integrated Intel graphics card. It works fine in windows but I can't seem to get it to work in Ubuntu. I tried searching but couldn't find anything pertaining to this issue.
