I have been trying to set up an LDAP server for a development environment as part of an internship for a week now, and I cannot get past this point. I have been following the 10.04 server guide to set up LDAP here: URL...Once I get to the following point in the guide, it just hangs:"As an example of modifying the cn=config tree, add another attribute to the index list using ldapmodify:"I've been working on this for a week and can't understand why this won't work. I am fairly certain that I've followed the guide to a 'T.'Any idea why am I receiving a permission denied error? Is this a permissions issue with one of the config files?

I was having so much trouble with ubuntu 8.04 that I deleted off my computer and did a fresh install of 9.10. I downloaded the 64 bit iso from the internet, burned it to a disc and installed it. When it asked if it should be the server version I thought I said no. Now when I boot it only boots to the server version and all I get is command line. Can I get out of this and get my regular ubuntu screen back or did I install the wrong version?
I am not seeing what i am doing wrong here, but here goes:
From my server I need to run a command for backup on 25 remote servers (through a script). Now I have pushed the public keys for remote ssh connectivity on all of them and it works ( I can push files using rsync without the need to enter passwords on the remote servers), howver, I need to run the following command:
ssh odsadmin@10.139.111.1 'cp -a /var/www/life /var/www/life-v4'
when I run this command, I keep getting asked to enter the password, I even tried putting sudo in front of the cp, but still get the request to enter the password.

In oreder to run an application software on RHEL 3 ES server, I created a link forcefully using following command from root id: # cd /lib64/tls/ # ln -sf libc-2.3.4.so libc.so.6 before that I copied file libc-2.3.4.so from a workstation with OS RHEL 4 WS so that a link can be created. Now I am unable to run any command except cd & pwd and it gives error messaage as given below: ls:relocation error:/lib64/tls/libc.so.6:symbol _rtld_global_ro,version GLIBC_PRIVATE not defined in file ld-linux-x86-64.so.2with link time reference.
Before running this command libc.so.6 was pointing to libc-2.3.so file in path /lib64/libc-2.3.2.so. I am now unable even to open a new window on the server. Please send me some solution as early as possible because this server is running production data and many users are runnig application on this server.
Whilst I have used GUI-based Linux distros for the last few years, I am now struggling somewhat when it comes to setting up a server from the command line. All the howto's I've read so far tell you how to set up certain things, but I don't know what I actually need to set up.Rather than asking the same questions all over again on a forum like this, and generally being a bit of a noob, I wonder if there's a resource somewhere that someone could direct me to in order to know what I need to do to set up a fileserver.
The hardware is all done, and I will probably set up a router distro like IpCop to manage the network, but I'm rather lost as to what packages I need, and how to know what the server is/isn't doing.I've used plenty of command lines in the past (ms dos, amiga dos, BASIC programming etc), just not a linux command line. All I've ever done is mount a few drives, use nmap and started x
I was using Red Hat 7.3 forever and decided it was time for a change. I went to Fedora 10 but it was really buggy. CentOS 5.2 is VERY stable. Here is my problem. The server is command line only -- I tend to hate GUI"S.I setup Samba no problem disabling the ports needed through the firewall and that was straightforward.CUPS is a nightmare for me since CentOS locks down the cupsd.conf and then the firewall does its thing. I allowed port 631 through the firewall but then got lost on the cupsd.conf. It's been too long and the old redhat one won't work with CentOS (not surprising since it's a VERY old system) straight-forward CUPS tutorial for a command line interface. I just need it to be:
I am ClearCase Admin, new to Linux administration and our development environment is in linux servers. I have found that our development server which is RHEL 3 (also ClearCase client) hangs when user gives find command. After some time of execution of the find command the server hangs. We have to hard-boot the server. Is this the normal behaviour of the Servers? This server which I am talking about is highly used.Sometimes 120 or more terminals will be opened and few compilation will be happening in the server. And same single user some times opens multiple terminals and works simulataneously. We have been monitoring the server and found out that during the workdays CPU usage % goes very high.

My company support a client with an old Redhead server " Linux version 2.6.9-5.ELsmp [URL] (gcc version 3.4.3 20041212 (Red Hat 3.4.3-9.EL4)) #1 SMP Wed Jan 5 19:30:39 EST 2005" My IT department wants to move this old server to a VMware machine and I'm trying to check if this project can fly. Me my self never worked on an old Linux server there for my first question is can I upgrade the kernel with the command yum -y install kernel..... and when I'm done I'm still going to have the old kernel just in case?
I want to run a specific command from one server to another. For example I have a server called A(client) and a server called B(Server). How would i fire a command on Server(B) while working on Client(A). One way of doing it is using ssh
"ssh -tq 10.180.8.231 ls -ltr"

I am trying to use a freshly installed kubuntu 10.04.1 LTS and am having major problems with delays in command execution. The box worked fine after installation. I then brought it to the client and it was fine for another day or so. Now, most of the commands I run take up to five minutes to execute. An 'ls' or 'top' will run straight away but and 'ssh','rm' or 'sudo apt-get' will just sit there for ever:
[Code]...
A reboot changed nothing. The shutdown was immediate so 'shutdown' is another command that works properly. The load of the box is '0', I used team viewer to see if I got the same problem from the LAN side rather than the WAN. It's the same. I thought it might have been the disks that had spinned down but it would have sped up after the ssh connection. After further analysis, it looks like this could be an authentication problem. The problem shows once the ssh password is validated and when we use sudo. Could this be related to the installation of samba3?

I have two load balancing boxes... One primary (box1) and one backup/failover (box2). I want to make sure the heartbeat is running on both boxes via a script. While I'm on box1, I want to run as any user: ssh box2 service pulse status and not have box2 ask for a password.
