Oct 2, 2010I am wondering why I used to pull a much faster download and upload (approx 20 down 3 up). Now I only get 2 down and barely 1 up). I am not sure why this happened. Any ways to check on this? Just this one, dell d505 running suse 11.2. All other WiFi computers are pulling bandwidth as expected.

Apr 2, 2010recently i rent a xen vps intended to setup a PPTPD vpn server for me and my friends. so we can by-pass the great firewall in china and get back on ....., facebook and stuff. i have already setup the server and i can connect to it without any problem. but i still want to do some further configuration the server:
1. i want to limit the bandwidth to 400k/s per connection.
2. i also want to limit the max connection per user a/c
i have some thoughts on the 2nd requirement. in the user configuration file of /etc/ppp/chap-secret, you can specify the range of ip the user can get, does it limit the max connection per user a/c? or they can connect anyway, just every now and then a box pop up says conflict in IP address?

Jan 4, 2010In my household a number of people use the internet. Up to a maximum of 3 wired connections and 2 wireless connections at its peak, all connection through my D-LINK G604T router. The problem is, when one person is downloading or watching ..... or whatever, the others using the internet suffer. I've spent hours configuring QoS on my router, and long story short, no matter how I configure it, it just simply does not work. QoS in no way shape or form limits connection speed (which it says it should). Anyway.
I have a spare computer under my desk, and I'd like to know if I could set this up with a (free) linux distro that limits bandwidth speed per connection. For example, of the 1500 kb/ps (about) my modem pulls, is there a way to limit that to 768 or 512 per connection? so person A can still download, person B can still watch ....., and person C can still play counterstrike with a latency under 100. This would solve many, many arguments in my house I am *fairly* good with computers, but if the distro came with documentation and a GUI that would be awesome.

May 12, 2010I have a VPS server with 512 MB memory. The php.ini is set so script memory limit = 16 MB. However, I have noticed in my top report, instances like the following:

The bold number of 6.4 is the % of sever memory this process is using. 6.4 % of 512 MB of memory is about 32 MB of memory, so it appears that this isn't being limited by php.ini. Am I correct? This leads to the next question: Is there some way to limit the amount of memory a single suphp process can use? (Basically, something like the setting in php.ini which limits suphp processes in the same way.)
Networking :: Production Server With Static IPs On Eth0 And Eth0:1 - Getting Private LAN On Eth1?
Jul 1, 2010I have two servers on a vlan at my datacentre/colocation and previously both servers had public IPs on their eth0 interfaces. The servers are HP ProLiant DL360s - one is a G4 and one is a G5 The newer G5 is now the LAMP server and the G4 has been retired and I want to repurpose it as an iSCSI target using openfiler freenas or similar.
My G5 has public/static IPs lashed to the eth0 physical interface and the eth1 is not configured to do anything yet. The G4 will have both interfaces available - perhaps one for ssh access from one of my static public IPs and the other to be a private IP on the local vlan. Here is what I am trying to get my head around...
The G5
eth0 - Public IP - full LAMP services on two or three virtual interfaces
eth1 - Private IP 192.168.0.1
The G4
eth0 - Public IP for ssh
eth1 - Private IP 192.168.0.2
Because my traffic between eth1 on these boxes is via private IPs on the local private vlan it doesn't add to my quota for bandwidth. How do I go about configuring the routing and gateways and other aspects of this so that I can run a private IP space network between the eth1s and still serve the outside world from the eth0s...
I am afraid that if I assign the private IPs to the eth1 interfaces the routing may either not work or interfere with the access to the production internet facing interfaces (eth0s).

3. Recently purchased a TP-Link Router (TL-WR740N) which claims to give 150 Mbps speed
When connected, my Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN shows a speed of only 65 Mbps . A friend came over with his laptop (having Windows 7) and was able to get 150 Mbps speed. I even compared and the same web sites were opening with considerable difference on our laptops. Do I need to upgrade the driver?

Apr 18, 2011I'm using Ubuntu Server 10.10 64 bit and am trying to get my Atheros AR81xx gigabit ethernet controller to use 1 gbps.I have 2 ethernet controllers, one's a linksys 100 mbps (which is connected to the router which goes to the internet) and the other is the Atheros gigabit controller that is connected to a Windows desktop that has an NVIDIA gigabit ethernet controller (for faster file transfers with a gigabit connection) I've ruled out that the problem is with the desktop as I plugged the windows PC into my macbook (which has a gigabit controller), and both the macbook and desktop report a gigabit connection.
I plug the windows desktop into the server and I only get 100 mbps. I am using a Cat 6 patch cable. I've tried several methods with ethtool to force it into 1 gbps mode, but none work. I've tried using a different cable. no change. I've tried making windows force a 1 gbps connection, didn't have the option to in the driver configuration. Only 10/100 configs. the commands I've tried in ethtool

Server :: Home Server Bandwidth Usage
Jan 27, 2011I am looking to probably make a home server act as a backup for most of my data but also as a media server. I want to host all my music and videos for the most part on the server and then regardless what computer I'm using I could listen or watch. (Another question would be could I have itunes find my music on the server and play it).
But anyway, from people with home media servers, what kind of bandwidth usage do you go through a month? Comcast (ISP) limits me to 250GB and I'm thinking this is enough for moderate usage, I just want to make sure before I start the project.
